Parish Office Hours Monday/Tuesday – 9:00 am-2:00 pm

Thursday/Friday—9:00 am—2:00 pm.

About Us Our Parish has been part of this region of Jefferson County since 1861. Our Parish is under the patronage of St. John the Beloved Disciple. Our patronal feast day of our parish is December 27th. This is our third parish location. From1861-1954 the Church was on West Rock Creek Road, adjacent to the Parish Cemetery. The Parish relocated to a site about one-half mile north of its present location on Old Highway 21 in 1954. In 2011 our new Church was erected at this location. This Church was dedicated on July 31, 2011. The old par-ish property was sold in 2015. St. John the Beloved Disciple Parish has approxi-mately 380 households with slightly more than 835 mem-bers. Some have been members for generations. From ear-ly days in the mid-19th Century till 2007, the Parish had a Catholic Grade School. The school closed in 2007 due to declining enrollment. Today we have a PSR (Parish School of Religion) program with around 40 students who attend public schools. We have spiritual opportunities and faith deepening programs for all parishioners, such as Bible Study, retreats etc. We have an active St. Vincent de Paul Society dedicat-ed to assisting the needy of our community. We are proud of our heritage and intend to actively witness to Jesus Christ today and in the future, through spiritual growth and active service. We look forward to growing spiritually and in numbers in the future. We hope you join us in worship, prayer and mis-sion again and again. We look forward to you becoming a member of St. John the Beloved Disciple Parish.

October 3, 2021— 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Welcome The obligation to participate in Sunday Mass for Catholics has been restored. For many, if not most, this can be prudently and safely done. There are ex-ceptions for this obligation. These exceptions include: •Those who are homebound and seriously ill are exempt

from this obligation. •Those immunocompromised & gravely concerned for

their health are exempt from this obligation. Those who have not been vaccinated should con-tinue to wear masks. We will not be checking verifica-tion. This is on the“Honor System”. We support one another. We need strong con-nections with Jesus Christ to lead us to life eternal. This is what we do by participation in Sunday Mass. Welcome! We are glad to see you! Fr. Rich

In Service to our Country The following are in service to our country on ac-tive duty with the Military. We pray for: Andrew Born-holdt, David Brandt, Jack Dawson, Chris Degenhardt, Ryan Fischer, Richard Frisch III, Justin Moffitt, Mathew Rigden, Blake Sikes, Brett Vennemann, Aaron Vogt and Joshua Vogt. Stewardship Reflection “So out of the ground the Lord God formed eve-ry beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them: and whatever the man called every living crea-ture, that was its name.” (Genesis 2: 19) The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn’t some-thing recently invented. Just as past generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations.

October 3, 2021—27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel Some Pharisees come to Jesus to confront Him over His interpretation of Scripture and specifically, how He understood the matter of divorce. Jesus throws the question back to them by asking what the Mosaic Law commanded. The Pharisees reply that a man is permitted to give his wife a bill of divorce and send her away. Jesus shifts the discussion away from this law (Deuteronomy 24: 1-4), the interpretations of which could range from permis-sive to the stringent. He goes beyond the question “Is it lawful?” and beyond legalistic arguments to the plan of God for relationships between men and women. The focus then becomes marriage, not divorce. The prophet Malachi had denounced divorce, ap-pealing to the creation story that we have heard in the first reading (Malachi 2: 13-17). Jesus also takes a prophetic, countercultural stance, and refers to this same Torah text. This encounter with the Pharisees comes in the section of Marks’ Gospel where the focus is on the cost of disciple-ship, as proclaimed the last three Sundays, and fidelity in marriage is never a cheap grace. Jesus refers to Moses’ concession about divorce as something that was allowed because of a sickness of the heart or cardiosclerosis, to give a liter translation of “hardness of … heart.” The same words are used to describe their ancestor’s wilderness re-bellion in Psalm (5: 8-9. In the divine plan for whole and healthy human relations in marriage, God did not intend divorce, says Jesus. “In the house” with His disciples, Jesus expands His teaching, probably reflecting the Gospel of Mark’s con-cern to strengthen the marriage commitment in the Chris-tian communities in the Greco-Roman world where divorce was common, and women could also divorce their hus-bands. Jesus’ message is not only uncompromising, it is also counter cultural, passing a subtle judgment on the dou-ble standard that allows one course of action for men but denies the same for women. Not only does a woman who has been divorced by her husband and marries another man commit adultery; it also works the other way, says Jesus. That He should accuse of adultery a man who divorced his wife and marries another woman, offended patriarchal hon-or! But both the man and the woman have equal rights and responsibilities to God’s plan for their unity “in one flesh.” Jesus’ teaching on marriage and divorce flows di-rectly into the description of His blessing of the young chil-dren, and once again we see the obtuseness of the disciples. Their selective memory has forgotten the words and action of Jesus when He placed and embraced a little child in their midst as a sign of their responsibility to and love of the in-significant and unimportant ones (Mark 9: 36-37). They “rebuke” the people, presumably the children’s parents, and most likely their mothers, just as Peter had “rebuked” Jesus, had tried to exorcise Him of of His ideas about suf-fering and death (Mark 8: 32). Once again Jesus turns the rebuke back on the disciples in a attempt to rid them of their spirit of preoccupation with power and status. The disciples’ stern, dismissive words to the people bringing the children to Jesus contrast with Jesus’ words of gentle en

couragement to those who want Him to touch their chil-dren, to have contact with Jesus’ own holy person and have Him call down on them the blessing of God. Jesus again embraces the children, hugging to Himself those who are helpless and dependent. We should not hear this Gospel as a sentimental romanticizing or idealizing of children, but as an embrace of Jesus for all who have no status, no claims to make, no power to wield, and so are receptive of the great gift that is offered—the Kingdom of God. With what have we been touched: with the distorted hope of the disciples for power, or with willingness to be “little ones” who are open to and receptive of the reigning presence of God?

Tough Teachings “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife.” The Pharisees approach Jesus with a question but the narrator of Mark’s Gospel comments that they are not truly curious about Jesus’ answer, but instead are “testing Him.” Jesus’ answer to their query about divorce goes back to the foundations of creation when God ordained the unity of husband and wife . Jesus ends with the retort, “What God has joined together, no human being must sepa-rate.” Jesus upholds the hierarchy of truth, placing God’s law above human commandments that have been fashioned due to “hardness of heart.” In our lives, we know we are called to perfection and yet, as human beings, we often fall short. Though we might not carry out the ideal of God’s dreams for us, He never ceases to call us back to covenant relationship with Him.

Unity of Marriage

In today’s first reading from the book of Genesis, we hear proclaimed the very segment of Scripture that Je-sus quotes. It is interesting to put this verse in context. God creates woman from the rib of man in order to provide a “suitable partner” for him. The man does not find the companionship he seeks with the animals and birds of creation, but only with the one who is “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” This reading offers a truth about the beautiful unity of marriage and a truth about hu-manity: men and women need each other. God has formed us for relationships with those who are like us and yet dif-ferent from us.

“ … like a little child …” Jesus points to a child’s ability to “receive” the Kingdom of God as a necessary attitude for anyone wishing to enter this Kingdom. Let us consider how a young child receives. Upon being given a gift, a child often responds with delight and eagerness. Once the gift is opened, the child’s joy grows in wishing to use this gift right away. We need this attitude to enter God’s Kingdom.

Know Your Faith These excerpts, from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, serve to enlighten aspects of Catholic Beliefs. We need to constantly grow in our knowledge of our Faith. “I Know Whom I have Believed” To Believe in God Alone. Faith is first of all a personal adherence of man to God. At the same time, and inseparably, it is a free assent to the whole truth that God has revealed. As personal adherence to God and assent to His truth, Christian faith differs from our faith in any hu-man person. It is right and just to entrust oneself wholly to God and to believe absolutely what He says. It would be futile and false to place such faith in a creature. To Believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. For a Christian, believing in God cannot be separated from be-lieving in the One God sent, His “Beloved Son,” in whom the Father is “well pleased”; God tells us to listen to Him. The Lord Himself said to His disciples: “Believe in God, believe also in Me.” We can believe in Jesus Christ be-cause He is Himself God, the Word made flesh: “No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known.” Because He “has seen the Father,” Jesus Christ is the only one who knows Him and can reveal Him. To believe in the Holy Spirit. One cannot believe in Jesus Christ without sharing in His Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who reveals to men who Jesus is. For “no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit,” who “searches everything, even the depths of God … No one comprehends the thoughts of God, except the Spirit of God.” Only God knows God completely; we believe in the Holy Spirit because He is God. The Church never ceases to proclaim her faith in only one God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The next section is “The Characteristics of Faith.”

Another Scam It seems that I am a favorite “bait” used by scammers to steal your money. Let me state this clearly. I will never solicit do-nations from anyone via emails. The only email account I have is listed for the parish in the front of this bulletin. Any email that comes from anywhere else with my name included is a scam, designed to steal your money. If you receive such a scam, recognize it for what it is—another form of robbery. Immediately delete that email. Fr. Rich

Recent Baptisms Congratulations to McKenzie Marie Gaines & Zoey Elizabeth Gaines, daughters of Travis and Jessica Gaines, and to Aiden Scott Stevens, son of Benjamin and Samantha Stevens who were recently baptized at SJBD. Welcome to the Catholic Church and to St. John the Be-loved Disciple Parish.

Catholic Alive—Trust In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that “whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Just as children trust their parents to care for and pro-vide for them, we too, as children of God should trust that God will provide all we need. Trust is critical in any relationship if it is to grow and flourish. The same is true for our relationship with God. Too many of us rely on our own self-sufficiency and spend countless hours planning our future rather trusting in God’s plan. Do you want more peace, joy and freedom like that of a child? Spend more time discerning God’s will for you and trust He will provide all that you need.

Missalettes Available Those of you who would like to have your own copy of the Missalette/Songbook are welcome to take one for your home and personal use. We will keep on hand sufficient copies of the Mis-salette/Song Book for Church use, but since these are sur-plus copies and will expire at the end of November, we make these available for you to use personally.

Parish Communal Rosary October is the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. October 7th is the feast of the Most Holy Rosary. This Wednesday, October 6th, as a conclusion of our Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration, we invite all to come and gather in Church for a Scriptural Rosary. We pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Before each decade of the Rosary we have a Scriptural reading highlighting each of the Glorious Mysteries. We will start the Scriptural Rosary at 6:30 pm, and when this is completed, we will conclude the even-ing with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Holy Rosary is a moving devotional prayer leading us to reflect on the great mysteries of our salvation. Come and participate.

Mass—The Rite of Sprinkling Beginning in October, and on the Second Sun-day of each Month, we plan to have as part of Mass the Rite of Sprinkling. This ritual, especially suitable for Sunday Mass, serves as a reminder for us of our Baptism, the primor-dial Sacrament of Forgiveness of our sins. This will be done at all Masses the Second Sun-day of each month. All will be sprinkled with Holy Wa-ter as a concluding part of this ritual.

Revising the Parish Sick List Over the course of the year, we have been add-ing names to the Parish Prayer list in the bulletin. At this time, we want to review this list. By November 1st, we want to hear from you if those listed still need prayers, or can now be removed from this list. Thank you for your help in maintaining the accuracy of our prayer list.
