Question of the Week:

Fr. Gerard’s Corner The people of Jerusalem had been driven out by the Babylonians during Baruch’s time. But Baruch envisions the day—it had already happened by the time this book was written—when the Chosen People will return to the holy city. He holds out God’s promise of transformation, when misery will change to joy. God will name Jerusalem “the peace of justice” (Baruch 5:4). A just peace seems especially distant in our day. How will justice come to those who live without means and without the opportunity or the power to change their condition? Only a true sharing of resources, opportunity, and power will bring a just peace, the peace of justice, to the world.

A baptism of repentance, which John proclaims throughout the region, is both wonderful and challenging. The baptism part of it is cleansing and life-giving. But repentance—truly feeling remorse for what we have done and turning away from sin—is difficult. This kind of baptism calls for action from both parties. It echoes Isaiah, who proclaims both “make straight his paths” and “the winding roads shall be made straight” (Luke 3:4, 5). God acts in our lives, but we must act as well. God’s grace does not release our responsibility.

Saint Paul’s prayer for the Philippians, “that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus,” is an apt prayer for us at this time (Philippians 1:6). We need to be attentive to the second half of his prayer as well, to discern what is of value so that we can live lives that are good and holy. Fr. Gerard

Can I properly discern what is of value and then act according to those values?

Gifts for Casa Eudes Just 2 weeks to get a Christmas gift for a Casa Eudes girl. Take a card from one of the Christmas trees as you leave the church and make a child’s Christmas brighter. We’ll be collecting the unwrapped gifts at every Mass for the first two weekends in December. On weekdays, bring them to the basement room of the school until Tuesday, December 11th. If no one is working in the room, leave your gift by the door. You'll make Christmas special for one the girls at the home we support in TJ.

Casa Eudes Christmas Party Help us host the Casa Eudes Christmas Party. This is the most festive event of the year at the girls' home in Tijuana. Come help us serve a holiday meal and greet Santa when he shows up with presents for the all kids. The party is on Saturday, December 15. The church van leaves the church parking lot at 9:00 a.m. You’ll need a current passport -- or a special passport card. Contact Jeff Sturgis at [email protected].

TUTORS NEEDED! The after-school tutoring program at St. Leo is in need of volunteers to help local elementary students with their homework on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 -5:30 PM.

If you have time in your schedule and a special place in your heart for children, please contact Jim McCollum: [email protected], 619-846-7855 or Diane Salyer: [email protected], 858-952-8880 for more information.

Jelly Needed!

Thank you for all of the incredible support for the peanut butter and jelly program, feeding homeless families and prisoners in Tijuana every week. We are overly stocked with peanut butter but our jelly supply is very low. Please help by dropping off any size or flavor of jelly, under the counter in the family room. All donations are truly appreciated!

Pax Christi USA, which means Peace of Christ, is a national Catholic peace and justice movement. Its purpose is to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating, and witnessing the call of Christian nonviolence. This work begins in personal life and extends to communities of reflection and action to transform structures of society. Pax Christi USA rejects war, preparations for war, and every form of violence and domination. It advocates primacy of conscience, economic and social justice, and respect for creation.

Eucharistic Prayer CD

AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn’t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God’s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters.

According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God’s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees.

It can’t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John’s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke’s Gospel of the angel’s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist’s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ’s birth in the Incarnation provides cause for rejoicing. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Registration forms are available in the brochure rack in the church vestibule, on line on our website and in the parish office. We can even mail one to you!

Please be aware that if you are giving online, that does not make you registered in the parish. You need to complete a parish registration form for us to track your donations.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as

well as formation to ministry in the training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
