EL LLAMADO DE DIOS La persona que ha sido “salvada” y que ha “oído la buena noticia de salvación” sigue viviendo en un mundo que no ha sido salvado, un mundo tristemente inconsciente de la presencia de Dios. Las lecturas de hoy bosquejan cómo el discípulo se hace presente al mundo. Ese perfil se inicia con Isaías: “Comparte tu pan con el hambriento. . . abre tu casa al pobre sin techo. . . viste al desnudo” (Isaías 58:7). Los que escuchan la palabra de salvación no son insensibles a las urgentes necesidades de los demás. Pablo le recuerda a su rebaño que él le trajo a Cristo no con elocuencia o sabiduría, sino que permaneció con ellos “débil y temblando de miedo” en medio de su trabajo diario (1 Corintios 2:3). Fi-nalmente, Jesús dice a sus discípulos que vayan a la desesperanza y oscuridad de las calles del mundo y dejen que la luz de Dios brille a través de sus obras buenas.
Los discípulos no salvan el mundo. Sin embargo, si nosotros hemos escuchado la Pala-bra de Dios y hemos empezado a discernir su presencia, podemos proclamar esa Palabra y traer esa presencia a los demás.

THE SANCTUARY LIGHT IN CHURCH BURNS IN MEMORY OF

The prophet Isaiah inspires us with these words: “Light shall rise for you in the dark-
ness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.” All of us celebrating the liturgy to-
day praise God for these words of encourage-ment. Surely each of us knows the gloomy side of life, but today’s readings propose a brilliant antidote to misery: the light of ser-
vice. Isaiah focuses on physical suffering, tell-ing us to provide food, clothing, housing, and
equal opportunity to those with limited re-sources. Moving beyond material needs, Saint
Paul demonstrates how to proceed humbly when attending to people’s spiritual needs. Saint Matthew’s Gospel stirs us to bold ac-tion: whatever gifts we have, we must put them at the service of our communities. As
Christians, we must engage with one another without holding back, letting our light shine
before all.
ALL IN Today’s readings leave no room for half-
heartedness. As beneficiaries of God’s provi-dence, we cannot hold back when serving others. When Isaiah instructs us to share our bread with the hungry, he offers no qualifications. He does not add, “if you think you can,” or “after all of
your own needs have been met.” On the contrary, the prophet simply reports that God expects us to care for those in need. In a similar way, the Gos-pel call is unconditional. Like a city atop a moun-tain, the Christian life cannot be hidden. Follow-ers of Jesus do not have the option to sit by and
wish vaguely for someone else to take care of hunger, homelessness, oppression, and ignorance.
God calls us into service. If we have heard the call, we must respond.

TODO INCLUIDO Las lecturas de hoy no dejan espacio para la tib-ieza. Como beneficiarios de la providencia de Di-os, no podemos retrasar el servicio a los demás. Cuando Isaías nos instruye a compartir nuestro pan con los hambrientos, él no menciona requisi-tos. Él no añade “si lo piensas puedes” o “después de que todas tus necesidades sean satisfechas”. Al contrario, el profeta simplemente comunica que
lo que Dios espera de nosotros es cuidar por aquellas personas que están en necesidad. De
manera similar, la llamada del Evangelio es in-condicional. Como una ciudad en la cima de una montaña, la vida cristiana no se puede esconder. Los seguidores de Jesús no tienen la opción de
quedarse sentados y desear vagamente que algui-en más atienda a los hambrientos, a las personas en situación de calle, a la opresión y la ignoran-cia. Dios nos llama a servir. Si ya escuchamos la
llamada, debemos responder
CONTINUA CON LA ORACIÓN Todos estamos de acuerdo que cuidar a los demás es im-portante. Absolutamente nadie quiere ver que un niño
pierda peso a causa de la hambruna. Y, aun así, tenemos recelo en ofrecer tiempo, talentos o dinero a obras de caridad. ¿Qué tal si los destinatarios usan incorrec-
tamente el dinero? ¿Qué tal si las donaciones promueven el desamparo y a largo plazo la dependencia? ¿Qué tal si
mi propia situación no es muy estable? ¿Cómo puedo ayudar a los demás cuando mi vida diaria es tan difícil y el futuro tan incierto? Estas son preguntas válidas. Dios quiere que usemos nuestro intelecto cuando discernimos mejor la manera hacer obras de caridad. Pero la duda
no debe guiarnos a la falta de acción. Si no sabemos cómo proceder, debemos dedicar bastante tiempo a la oración. En oración, consideramos nuestras opciones y preguntamos al Señor cómo ser sal y luz en el mundo.
Así como el salmo de hoy nos lo recuerda, Dios nos llama para ser amables y misericordiosos. Creyendo
firmemente que Dios siempre cuidará de nosotros, con-fiamos con corazones firmes y compartimos con los
demás, no de vez en cuando, con culpa o tentativamente, sino “generosamente”.
