PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

COVENANT PEOPLE

“I will be your God and you will be my peo-ple,” that is how God Himself explains the spe-cial relationship He would like to have with

His people. For generations and genera-tions, people offered prayers and animal sacrifices on a regular basis as a way to live their faithfulness to God. The real and final covenant be-tween God and His people was sealed when Jesus offered Himself on the cross as the Lamb of sacrifice, and this way Jesus was replacing all the sacrifices of the Old Testament and was even becoming in the Eucharist our food for the journey. Your personal covenant with God was sealed the day of your baptism and many times in your life you will be re-minded of this covenant in various ways: a special spiritual season as the one we have started, Lent; the renewal of your baptism vows; your confession with the act of contrition; your participation in the masses; your own efforts for conver-sion. . . . Candy Sales Our students will be selling World’s Famous Chocolate Bars beginning Monday, 2/5. Please support them if they catch you after Mass.

We hear about the Karen families joining our school. Who are the Karen?

Our families are part of the Sgaw Karen community that makes their church home at St. Casimir. The Karen people are originally from the Karen State of Burma. Burma has suffered civil war, political oppression and ethnic conflict since the 1950’s. Our families came to the United States after spend-ing many years in refugee camps in Thailand. Karen people traditionally place a high value on educa-tion. Our families report their number one reason for coming to the US is to help their chil-dren be well educated.

The Franciscan Brothers of Peace are supportive of this Karen community. We are excited to help these families and children reach their goals of a Catholic education. Stay tuned for more information on this community and cul-ture! Gratefully, Anne Gattman, Principal
