Dear Sisters and Brothers,

We often feel that there is a big divide between the humanities and the sciences. Art, literature, and religion seem at odds with physics, biology, and mathematics. The problem lies in our not realizing that both of these worlds – the invisible and the visible – are real and deserve our attention.

The healing miracles of the Apostles found in Act 5:12-16, played an important role in the early years of the Christian movement. They caught the attention of people who were too busy with the things

of the visible world to give much thought about the things of the invisible world.

“Doubting Thomas” has become a world for people who cling to their doubts. In John 20:19-31 we see that Thomas would have fit right into today’s world because he was only prepared to believe what he could see with his own eyes. Eventually he learned that there is another world beyond the visible world that can only be seen with the eyes of faith.

“Seeing is believing” is the motto of common sense. We are prepared to believe only what can be grasped by the senses. But there is a sense in which “believing is seeing.” This is the motto of the moral life and religious faith. In the midst of our relationships to others and to God, we must believe in order to see!

Blessings, Fr. Ray

Fr. Ray’s Sabbatical

The priest policy of the Diocese of Oakland states that for every six years of ordination, a priest is entitled to a three month sabbatical. I applied for this sabbatical over a year ago and the Archbishop has granted me this time off. The sabbatical begins on July 1, 2013 and ends on October 1, 2013. During this time I plan to walk the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain, a 500 mile pilgrimage from St. Jean, France to Santiago, Spain. I leave for the pilgrimage on August 11th and will be returning on September 24th. I am sure we will have a new Parochial Vicar by the time I leave who will be ministering to the needs of the parish during my absence. I plan to set up a blog to share my reflections during the pilgrimage. Randy Starkweather, our parish facilities manager, will be my walking companion on the Camino, and we will be meeting two other couples from the parish along the way. All are invited to a movie night on Wednesday, June 5th at 7pm in the multi-purpose room to watch the movie “The Way.” This movie takes place on the Camino and inspired me to make this journey. I hope you will join us on June 5th as we gather for fellowship, wine and cheese, and to watch this inspirational movie.

Blessings, Fr. Ray

“Be Christ for Others as Christ is for Us”

Pastoral Council

Nominations

Might you or someone you know feel called to this important parish ministry? The St. Joan of Arc Pastoral Council serves our Pastor, Fr. Ray, in setting the vision for our parish as a whole via the Three Year Pastoral Plan. The Council also acts as the eyes and ears of the collective wisdom of our parishioners through their valuable feedback. The Pastoral Council consists of nine parishioners, a staff representative, and Fr. Ray. Each July, three parishioners leave the committee after serving a three‐year term and three new parishioners join, freshly committed to their new term. This rotation ensures that the Council benefits from both past experience and fresh eyes. Each spring, these three new councilors are selected after engaging in a pastoral leadership discernment process, which takes place once a week for two weeks. Please prayerfully consider nomination candidates (and if you feel so called, including yourself!) for this leadership position within the Parish. Candidates must be registered members of the Parish, a member of the Catholic faith, and have not served on the Pastoral Council within the last nine years. In the coming weeks, look for nomination boxes in the vestibules in which to place names and contact information. If you wish to nominate someone other than yourself, please share this with the potential candidate prior to placing in the box. Once nominations have been gathered, candidates will be invited to meet and discern their call to serve our parish as a Pastoral Councilor. More details coming soon! Your Pastoral Council Members:

PEOPLE OF LIFE

Bald eagles, the living symbol of our national freedom, spirit, and pursuit of excellence, have protection by law from those who would kill or harm them. In the U.S. we have a stringent federal law, the Bald Eagle Protection Act, that protects not only the national bird, the bald eagle, but also that bird’s eggs. If you chanced upon some of those eggs in a nest out in the wilderness, it would be illegal for you to destroy them. If you did so, you would suffer the same penalties and sanctions as if you had shot the adult bird out of the air. By the force of law, we acknowledge the scientific truth that the eagle’s egg (that is to say, the embryonic eagle inside that egg) is the same creature as the beautiful bird that we witness flying overhead. Therefore, we pass laws to safeguard not only the adult but also the very youngest member of that species. Even atheists can see how a bald eagle’s eggs ought to be protected; it’s not a religious question at all. If bald eagles are valuable (in this case, for pragmatic reasons of conservation), then it is right and fitting to protect them at all stages of their existence. This same logic holds for humans. It is rather striking how we are able to understand the importance of protecting the earliest stages of various forms of animal life, but when it comes to our own human life, we go through deceptive mental gymnastics to dissociate ourselves from our own humble embryonic origins. It is indeed a sad commentary on the moral confusion of our times that we readily protect embryonic animals, but are eager to offer up our own human embryonic brothers and sisters for dismemberment on the altar of stem cell sacrifice.
