16th Sunday of Ordinary Time Sunday 19th July 2020
Year A, Weekday Cycle 2, Psalter Week 4
SPECIFIC PROCEDURES FOR THE
DIOCESE OF SALFORD
Funerals and Weddings should be limited to 30 guests, or less if the stated capacity of a church is less than 30. These liturgies may include Mass with all the conditions concerning the distribu-tion of Holy Communion etc. However, the sim-pler form of graveside and crematorium funerals is to be encouraged.
The Sacrament of Baptism should be for one child only on each occasion and should be lim-ited to immediate family and godparents. Those whose child’s baptism had to be postponed can now contact Fr. K to arrange a new date.
The Celebration of First Communions will be delayed until the autumn, at the earliest, I have already sent out proposed new dates for the Ho-ly Communion Masses. Please note that large numbers of people are often invited, many of whom are not familiar with the church and litur-gical practice and this may easily lead to a com-promise of the requirements of social-distancing and misunderstandings about the reception of Communion. Therefore numbers will have to be initially restricted to immediate family.
Dear Parishioners,
Sadly the ancient heresies of the Church are no longer taught in schools, if they were we would be able to avoid such error to-day.
One such heresy is called Donatism, a heresy that taught that the Church existed only for the pure, perfect and holy (it would be a very small Church), and that sinners have no place in it.
Sadly, - and occasionally I even find myself doing it - we see shadows of this heresy in the Church today, especially when people who do not quite meet the Christian ideal, feel unwel-come or judged by the Church and her members.
However, the Church is not an oasis of holiness, the Church is a divinely established instrument (or body) given to the world so that we can attain holiness; it draws us, shapes us and points us towards Jesus, Himself.
Remember it is Jesus who points out in Luke 5:31 “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick”.
The Gospel today reminds us that the Church - God’s beloved family - is made up of wheat and darnel, saints and sinners.
Both are needed for the Church to be.
There is a phrase that we should all become familiar with: Every saint has a past, every sinner has a future!
It is through the Church we let go of our past, it is through the Church, as both saints and sinners, that we look eagerly to the future as we respond together to the Lord’s call to holiness.
God Bless
Fr. Kieren

Attending Sunday Mass In order to attend Mass, please register your interest and your preferred Mass time, by emailing Amanda (only) by 12 noon on Wednesday or phoning the Presbytery on Wednesday morning. Roof repairs at English Martyrs’ Church (scheduled for Easter) will begin on Thursday 23rd July. For the next few weeks most weekday Masses from that date will be moved to St. Monica’s Church - including weekday funer-als. Baptisms will continue to be celebrated at English Martyrs’. Private prayer and adoration - I’ve noticed fewer people are now attending since Public Mass has returned - will cease from this coming Tuesday. Can I thank on behalf of myself and all the parishioners the stewards who have helped me open the church for private prayer and remind them that there help contin-ues to be needed at all Public Masses.
Re-Arranging Baptism if I have had to postpone the baptism of your child because of the lockdown you might want to begin to get in touch so that an alternative date may be arranged.

Getting Your Child Baptised
The Code of Canon Law
states: “Parents are
obliged to see to it that in-
fants are bap-tised within
the first weeks after birth”
(867)
This canon, although not practical for many reasons, reminds us of the importance and urgency of the sacrament of Baptism.
As a Parish we follow the Diocesan Baptism Poli-cy:
In order for a baby/child (under the age of 7) to be baptised, the Catholic family, (resident in the Parish of St. John Henry Newman) if not already practising their faith, must begin to attend Sunday Mass for a minimum of at least 6 weeks before a baptism date can be discussed.
To discuss this further please contact Fr. Kieren or speak to him after Sunday Mass. After confirmation of a date for Baptism, a Preparation meeting must be arranged.
For children over 7 and for adults considering be-coming a Catholic please contact Fr. Kieren via the Presbytery Office (0161) 7482328 or via email (see front of newsletter).

Understanding Confession - The Catechism 1420 - 1425
In language we might all understand
“God forgives us endlessly and the church celebrates this reality through the sacrament of reconciliation. For, even though we are baptized and con-firmed, and even though we are steeped in Eucharist, there remains that tendency within us to "miss the mark," to be selfish and unilateral, to fail to love, a tendency to commit sins. But God never fails to love and the church celebrates this in the sacrament of reconciliation. We call it a sacrament of “conversion” because in celebrating it, we turn our hearts empowered by the Spirit of Love, back to Divine Love through Christ who reveals that Love. We also refer to it as the sacrament of "penance" a term which comes from a Latin word: repere, which suggests a posture of sorrow and a process of change. It is also called “confession” because it is here that we are invited to talk out loud about how we have sinned, and in that talking, recognize the mercy of God which is endless. And it is called the sacrament of “reconciliation,” because it draws us back to balance, it reconnects us to our journey of faith, and it celebrates God’s wonderful love”.
