(Pebbles in the Pond)

The Teacher was right, now I understand

We have all faced setbacks and tragedies in life that made us ask- “Why me? Why now? I don’t deserve this crisis” and many other questions. Many of these questions come when we feel that life is not giving us a fair shot or we believe that we did our best and the result was certainly not what we ex-pected. Whether it was because of a loss of employment, break down of marriage or having to deal with death in the family or battling a sickness, or other unfortunate events- all of us had been there. We felt utterly helpless. It’s like being all alone in a bottomless pit. We respond to crisis in different ways-FIGHT- when we try our best to do whatever we can to improve the situation; FLIGHT- when we choose to run away from the problems hoping that these problems will just magically resolve themselves or be in denial that the crisis actually exists; FREEZE- when we allow problems to just stare at us on the face and we just feel help-less and hopeless and wish we can just disappear or the prob-lems can just disappear. I’ve had my own share of responses when I fought or flew or froze in response to different life’s challenges. Whatever mode of response I chose, there are always some constants: 1. There is always a LESSON to be learned. If I don’t learn that important lesson, I will continue to get beaten by that par-ticular adversity until I get the lesson. Remember the old ad-age: History repeats itself because we never learn from the lessons of history. 2. God wired me and every person to be resilient. We can learn to bend and “roll with the punches”. He’ll supply us with the graces we need to bear our crosses.

3. God doesn’t always drop down from heaven to save me from distress. He does send His angels to help us. They’re the people around us; sometimes they can even be total strangers. 4. I am God’s child and I am important to Him. I am far more valuable and important that whatever mis-take or, excuse me for my word, whatever stupidity I have made. Like anything in life, all things will pass. All problems will pass. All sickness will pass. Only God and his goodness to us will prevail. Remember the story of Pandora? After all the pestilence and all forms of hu-man suffering and tragedies come out of the box- the last to come out is HOPE. We should never give up hope. Never.

The Folded Page

Up in a quaint old attic, as the raindrops pattered down, I sat paging through an old school book-- dusty, tattered, and brown. I came to a page that was folded down, And across it was written in my childish hand: "The teacher says to leave this for now, 'tis hard to understand." I unfolded the page and read. Then I nodded my head and said, "The teacher was right; now I under-stand." There are lots of pages in the Book of Life that are hard to understand. All we have to do is fold them down and write: "The Teacher says to leave this for now, 'tis hard to under-stand." Then someday -- maybe in heaven -- we will unfold the pages again, nod our head, and say, "The teacher was right; now I under-stand." --Author Unknown

DID YOU KNOW? Refresh your summer water safety rules With many vacations cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, families may be spending a lot of time at local beaches. Before you hit the sand, brush up on your water safety rules with your children. Think about implementing the buddy system, where two people stick together and keep an eye on each other. Know who will be in charge of watching children at each time, and, if possible, make sure the adults in your family know CPR. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Refresh your memory about summer water safety” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
