Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On this Father’s Day, we congratulate all our dads who dedicate themselves to the lives of their families, and we pray for all those who have died. In our parish, we also say “farewell” to Fr. Tony who will be leaving for his new parish assignment on Wednesday, and “Welcome” to Fr. Jesús Ramos who will be replacing him here on the same day. We also rejoice to have Fr. Godfrey Bamuganyire from Uganda join us here for the summer.

+++

As I mentioned in last week’s bulletin, we also welcome today Fr. Dominic Eshikena, O.P., who will be begging your generosity for the Dominican Fathers and Brothers Province of Nigeria, as part of the annual Mission Cooperation Plan of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith of the Archdiocese of Newark. Dominicans in Africa are currently located in some 25 countries. The Dominican Province of Nigeria and Ghana is the largest entity on the African continent. They are engaged in a diversity of ministries, very much concentrated in the areas of evangelization in rural parts of Africa; ongoing Christian formation in the faith through parish ministries; ministry among Muslims; social justice ministries, and health care delivery; chaplaincies and education ministries at all levels. The Dominicans are committed to bringing Christ in a relevant way to all the people that they minister to. As always, I encourage your generosity in the special Second Collection to be taken this weekend at all the Masses.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

How do you answer Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” Our answers are known more by how we live than by the words alone. So, “Who do people say that you are?” Do they see Christ clearly enough to answer, “One of the baptized” or “Someone clothed with Christ”? Can people see that we take up our cross to live the values of the gospel, even when that puts us at odds with the world, the Church, family, or friends?

Last year marked the 50th Anniversary of the March on Selma. In Martin Luther King, Jr., and those who joined him there, people saw believers willing to put their lives on the line for the sake of their faith and for their sisters and brothers. Pope Francis has beatified Archbishop Óscar Romero. His life proclaimed the gospel so clearly that he was a threat to the Salvadoran leaders. It cost him his life. Neither man looked for these causes. They chose to accept them, like Jesus, who ushered in the messianic age. We continue living its values by losing ourselves in Jesus and his message so that others might experience God’s merciful, unconditional love.

When our lives proclaim that we are clothed in Christ, others cannot doubt that we are the baptized who take up our cross daily, no matter the cost. St. Francis de Sales taught that if we accept the troubles, afflictions, and contradictions of life we imitate Jesus, who did not choose his cross but accepted it in obedience to make God’s ways known. Live Jesus. Take up your cross. Make clear that you are a Christian, a Christ-bearer, clothed with Christ each and every day. “O God, at baptism we were clothed with Christ and told to keep his light burning brightly. Help us wear Christ so well that people see him in us and experience the freedom and love you promise.” Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9: 23

We are not very good at “denying ourselves” in our society. Our current economic situation is evidence of what happens when people think they can have everything they want. Jesus calls us to set our own personal “wants” aside so that we have the resources to follow Him instead.

If you placed a child for adoption in New Jersey, you need to know the law has changed!!! Beginning January 1 2017, adoptees and certain relatives will be able to obtain a copy of their original birth certificate without a court order. The birth certificate will include the names of the birth parents who placed children for adoption, even though both the State and the Church promised anonymity to the birth parents at the time of the adoption. Birth parents in New Jersey CAN protect their privacy. The New Jersey Department of Health offers two forms—a Redaction Request Form and a Contact Preference Form—that allows birth parents of adult adoptees an opportunity to protect their privacy. Birth parents who finalized an adoption before August 1, 2015 can file a request with the State of New Jersey indicating that they want the State Registrar to keep their name off any document provided to adoptees and certain other individuals. To do this, parents MUST complete and submit a Redaction Request Form no later than December 31, 2016. Otherwise, their identity will be revealed if the original birth certificate is requested by an adult adoptee or certain relatives. Birth parents who choose not to redact their personal information from the birth certificate can indicate if they wish to have ‘contact’ or ‘no contact’ with the adoptee by completing and submitting a Contact Preference Form. Birth parents can select one of three methods of contact: 1) No contact with the adoptee or adoptee’s relatives; 2) Contact with the adoptee or adoptee’s relative through an intermediary; or 3) Direct contact with the adoptee or adoptee’s relative. Birth parents who submit a Contact Preference Form must also complete a medical, social, and cultural history form. Those who opt to submit this form are also required to update the medical, social, and cultural history information once every 10 years until the birth parent reaches the age of 40 and every five years thereafter. If you are a birth parent who placed a child for adoption in New Jersey prior to August 1, 2015, please do not delay in visiting the Vital Records section of the State of New Jersey’s website to learn more about the adoption law change and download forms, at http://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/record.shtml. If you desire to protect your privacy, you must submit either the Redaction Request Form or Contact Preference Form with the Family History Information Form no later than December 31, 2016.

New Jersey Catholic Conference Helpline After a century-long role in adoptions, the Church understands its moral obligation to assist birth parents who wish to preserve their privacy. For this reason, the New Jersey Catholic Conference offers a resource page on their website as well as a dedicated HELPLINE for those who are in need of assistance. For questions regarding the change to New Jersey’s Adoption Law (see the article below), please visit the Catholic Conference on the web at www.njcathconf.com or call 609-989-4809. Please help to spread the word by notifying family members, neighbors, and friends about this change to the New Jersey adoption records law.
