A SUMMER BLESSING

May you walk with God this summer in whatever you do, wherever you go. Walking with God means...walking with honesty and with courage,

walking with love and respect and concern for the feelings of others. May you talk to God this summer and every day and in every situation.

Talking with God means...Praying words of praise for the beauty of creation, saying prayers of thanks for friends and good times,

asking God’s help in all your decisions, expressing sorrow when you have failed. May you walk and talk with God every day. Amen.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

The weed referred to by Jesus in this parable is a type of darnel. It grows close to the wheat, but since its roots are deeper and stronger, any attempt to uproot it inevitably uproots the wheat as well. Thus, if eliminated prematurely, there would be no harvest at all.

The kingdom of heaven inaugurated by Jesus “may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.” Jesus, in His death and resurrection, conquered sin and death, and the work of the kingdom advanced. And yet the enemy - the weed - is still at work among us.

In faith, however, we know that God’s timing is perfect. We may long for the day when evil is completely destroyed, but we know that God in His wisdom has a plan for His kingdom and the harvest. For now, it would be premature to uproot the darnel. At the end of time, however, when the new heaven and the new earth have come, every hint of sin and evil will be wiped away.

In the meantime, we must endure the evil that is in the world. Even Jesus underwent temptation by Satan. The Father permits us to be tempted too, and yet our victory lies with Jesus. With the eyes of faith, we must learn to detect the weeds among the wheat. We must resist evil wherever we see it and stand up for righteousness. In this, we can depend on God’s help, relying on the truth of His Word, the power of His Love, and His grace and strength. As the Father sent angels to minister to Jesus in the desert after His confrontation with the devil, we, too, can count on our Father to care for us.

Someday, the weeds and the wheat will be separated. The weeds will be burned, while the wheat will be gathered together. At this final judgment, evil will be defeated, and the righteous “will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.”

“Lord Jesus, you know how much we want to be part of Your eternal kingdom. Protect and guide us when we encounter evil in the world. When we face temptation, send Your angels to minister to us, as Your Father did for You. With Your Holy Spirit to guide us, we can face the battles that lie ahead.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field...He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” Matthew 13: 24, 37-38

As children of God, we are all “good seeds,” blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we share our talents and our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our stewardship we sow “good seeds” on earth to ultimately help each other get to Heaven!
