Each year, the Archdiocese of Newark’s Office of Family Life Ministries prepares approximately 2,800 couples for marriage in the Catholic Church. The preparation includes: Pre-Cana Sessions, God’s Plan for a Joy-Filled Marriage Seminars, Natural Family Planning as well as Engaged Encounter Retreat experiences. This is in addition to the preparation that couples have with a priest or deacon who prepares them for the Sacrament. While Spanish is the most common of the foreign languages for Pre-Cana, the program is also offered in Portuguese, Polish, Korean, and Italian, as well as for those with Special Needs, and in American Sign Language for the Deaf.

The U.S. Census reports the Northeast has the lowest divorce rate in the country and New Jersey has the lowest divorce rate in the United States. While some may see the Archdiocese’s formation requirements as stringent, these requirements are certainly paying dividends.

The Office of Family Life Ministries continues to support married couples each year with anniversary Masses, presided by Archbishop Myers. This is in addition to days of reflection for married couples, as well as retreats such as Marriage Encounter, that help married couples to continue to live the grace of the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.

Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, which makes the Office of Family Life Ministries a reality. Our parish has already pledged $194,746.00, which is 201% over our goal and 86% of our stretch goal of $226,041.20 for maximum parish rebate. Please send your pledge card to the Archdiocese or pick up a pledge form/envelope in the church or rectory.

Now through July 4th, we continue to join Catholic Churches throughout the United States in a Fortnight for Freedom. You are asked to pray each day for an end to an institutional coercion by the government against conscience and government intrusion into the ordering of Church institutions. A simplified prayer you may say daily is:

Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus. We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good.

Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; By your grace, may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

In Israelite society, circumcision was the boy’s initiation into the community of the people of God. Here circumcision and naming have been combined. It is clear that this was truly a chosen child, for his father Zechariah was given back his speech when he confirmed that the child was to be named John. John had indeed been set apart by God for a mission to the people of Israel. In preparation for this, he spent his days in the wilderness, the place that was traditionally considered a testing ground. It was there that he was strengthened in spirit for the task before him.

Some patristic writings claim that the birth of Jesus was placed in the calendar when the days begin to lengthen in the Northern Hemisphere. John’s birth marks the time when the days are getting shorter: “He must increase; I must decrease.”

“God of all creation, from the beginning creation sang as you brought the world from chaos into light. Throughout the story of Israel, men and women raised their voices praising your holy name. In Jesus you sang your song of love to us. May our voices join with all the angels and saints in joyful praise.”

Madonna Chapel & Mausoleum Madonna Cemetery in Fort Lee has begun construction of an addition to its mausoleum. Madonna Mausoleum, the first community mausoleum built in the Archdiocese of Newark, has served the needs of our local community for almost forty years. The construction of an addition was necessary to continue in this mission. The new expansion will be called the “All Saints” section and there will be several liturgical features of saints that represent the ethnic diversity of our community. There will also be private and semi-private areas in the mausoleum addition and there will be options for both single and double interment. Because pre-planning is an important family responsibility, the cemetery is offering cemetery counseling and information about the mausoleum. If you wish to have more information, please fill out the enclosed form in the brochure at the exits of the church. You may also contact Madonna Cemetery by dialing: 1-866-392-1951.
