Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On the weekend of November 27, 2011, the English-speaking Catholic Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers that we use at Mass (The Roman Missal). In order to become familiar with these changes before they are implemented, samples of the new texts will be printed here. Please review weekly. Changes are not italicized.

Nicene Creed:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins And I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Some parishioners have asked about the white wine we are using at Mass. It is not one of the changes in the Mass; it is simply that our supplier was out of red when we needed a new order. It is the same “rosato” only white in color. Liturgical guidelines do not specify the color of the wine, although for sign value red more easily reminds us of blood. We will be returning to the red variety likely in another month or so.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

In an article on “successful aging,” Dr. Lawrence Lenoir proposes that the art of giving and receiving love is at the heart of growing old gracefully. Research shows that being in a loving relationship quiets the demons of depression and despair. So, if you want to be healthy, be loving. Jesus would agree.

The rabbis of Jesus’ day argued about which was the greatest commandment of the six hundred thirteen in the Torah. When the Pharisees asked Jesus, he answered that what God wanted most from the chosen people who had been liberated from slavery and called to live in a covenantal relationship was a return of the love God showed to them. This love has two faces: loving God totally and loving one another as one loves oneself.

Our love must flow outward in compassionate generosity The Lord called on Israel to show its love by not oppressing aliens, not wronging weak orphans and defenseless widows, and not extorting the poor by demanding interest on loans. No less is asked of those who have received the Holy Spirit and live in community with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That’s us. Love one another.

Transfiguration Academy “If my words are without actions, I am no more than a clanging Bell”

...St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians

Transfiguration Academy students, parents and faculty participated in the “Walk for the Cure” held at Overpeck Park. Through direct donations and those who supported “Team Transfiguration”, we raised over $1,000 for the American Cancer Society, supporting research to fight breast cancer. It is through actions such as these that Our Students demonstrate the practical application of the Gospel values they are taught, develop a social conscience, and a sense of self-worth. It is through actions such as these that Our Faculty lead by example keeping faith with their mission:

To Teach as Christ taught.

“The exercise of charity is one of the Church’s essential activities: love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind, is as essential to her mission as the ministry of the sacraments and the preaching of the Gospel.” - Excerpt from Pope Benedict XVI’s Encyclical Letter: “Deus Caritas Est.”
