January 13, 2019—The Baptism of the Lord

John the Baptist points to Jesus as the one “who ranks ahead of me.. Who is to be baptized with the Holy Spirit,” John did not recognize Jesus at first. But it was John the Baptist’s electrifying preaching an extraordinary summons to justice, honesty, and most of all hope in the new age that Jesus to come and ac-complish what He did. He continues to call us to stewardship, allowing us to continue His work and to achieve His ideals in the world.

Come Learn about the Life of St. Thomas More

Thursday, January 17

6:00 - 9:00 pm (6:00 - 7:00 pm Potluck Dinner)

St. Joan of Arc Church Parish Center, Room 22

820 Division St., Lisle, IL

Director of Adult Faith Formation, Michael Lewandowski, will present on the life of St. Thomas More. Thomas was born in London in 1477. He was educated in the finest schools, and had a voracious appetite for learning and pursuing truth. He eventually married and had four children. He even set up his law practice so that he could spend optimal time with his family. More was a vehement defender of the Catholic Faith during the Protestant Reformation. He eventually served as Lord Chancellor. It was in this office that More would resist King Henry VIII’s desire to divorce his wife and declare him-self head of the Church. More eventually re-signed from his position, but was subsequently accused of treason. Despite coercion, pressure, and imprisonment, More would stay faithful to the Catholic Church. More was condemned to die, and was martyred by beheading on July 6, 1535. Thomas More was canonized in 1935.

I am always thankful to be serving the generous hearts of St. John the Apostle and St. Alexander. I would like to thank those who sent me cards or gifts, I can never return the abundant generosity of now both parishes. I want to take the time to thank all of those who decorated the church, inside and out, we had many hands assisting. If you would ever be interested in helping please let me know. Thank you for the wonderful mu-sic during the Christmas season. Thank you to all who took on ministries of service throughout the Christmas season, letting others know that God still reaches out them. Finally, a special thank-you to those who made offerings for the flowers, donat-ed many of the flowers in the church. And thank-you especial-ly to all who made themselves present for the liturgies and of-fered the prayers of the Church. The presence of Christ and our presence is always the greatest “decoration” of the Christ-mas season. Of note also, is that I have recently been informed that the transitional deacons in our diocese, of which there are only three, are all being reassigned to different parishes as they prepare for their ordination to the priesthood in May of this year. This means that deacon Santiago Corona who assisted both parishes will be transferred to St. Mary’s in West Chicago until he is ordained a priest. I was told that this new assign-ment will begin on February 1st. We will miss his presence and I know that he was truly grateful for your kindness and warmth towards him. If you would like to be at Deacon Santia-go’s ordination to the priesthood, it will take place on Saturday May 25th at 11:00am at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. Finally, our devoted office manager, Arlene Ries has chosen to step down from that position. She has been here offering her work and care for roughly the last 18 years here at St. John the Apostle. Arlene is still a parishioner and I know that we will see her around, hopefully for many more years. I will person-ally miss Arlene’s heartfelt concern for myself and our parish. I pray that her renewed retirement will bring her many of God’s blessings. Be sure to thank Arlene if you see her.

With prayers and Blessings, Fr. Rosenbaum.

ARLENE PLANS TO RETIRE ON JANUARY 31st

Dear Friends: On Thursday, January 3, I spoke with Fr. Rosenbaum and talked with him about my plan to retire from the position I have held at St. John the Apostle rectory for the past 17 + years. Now, as I approach another birthday, it is difficult to imagine where the years have gone; but you have provided me with an opportunity to know you, to enjoy your friendship, and to experience very satisfying years of semi-retirement. You will still see me around as I continue to volunteer in the Religious Education Office on Saturday mornings. Thank you for all you have done to make my years here at the rectory so pleasant and so rewarding. Love and Prayers Arlene
