SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION

Dear Friends in Christ,

“Vocation” comes from the Latin word “vocare” which means “to call”. There is a basic call to “holiness” which is given to each of us. God is the One Who does the calling. Within our basic call to holiness, each of us receives our specific “vocation” wherein we will live out our call to “holiness” – Marriage, consecrated celibate life, Religious Life of monasticism for men and women, Religious Life of Brothers or Sisters, and of course, for some men the vocation to the Sacred Priesthood. All vocations have as their purpose the salvation of the one being called and the salvation of those around us who will be affected by our own particular vocation. St. Paul reminds us today that we fulfill our vocations by using our bodies as Christ intended. We live chastity of mind and body. Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit and it is our vocation to give glory to God by pure living. This is our vocation to Holiness. Parents assist their children in preparing for and discerning their vocations. They do not just help their children to “get a job” by the education they offer. Rather, they first and foremost assist their children to listen to God’s calling and then assist them in getting the knowledge and skills needed for that vocation. Naturally, the discerning process happens along with the amassing of general knowledge and skills common to all vocations; hence, the need for a truly “liberal arts” education, rather than just technical education. Both have their place. Samuel’s mother, Hannah, helped her son prepare for his vocation. She presented him to the Priest, Eli, as a part of her parental duties. Our parents do this through presenting their children through Baptism, training them in their prayers, catechism, and active involvement in parish life on a regular basis throughout their lives. Children benefit from seeing their parents be actively involved in continuing prayer in the home and in the Church, Adult Religious Education, prayer, reading Catholic books at home and regular Sunday Mass attendance and sacramental participation. Parents, you have such a great opportunity in the gifts God is giving you in your children. Years from now, you will look back on the memories you made for

yourselves and for your children. Make them good memories by drawing close to the Church, which is to draw close to Christ Himself. Practice your faith, this is your vocation. If you do this, you will be more likely to help your children make good memories as they respond to God’s call in whatever “Vocation” is theirs: imagine – happy and permanent marriages from your homes, happy and permanent single celibate lives from your homes, happy and permanent religious brothers and sisters from your homes, and happy and permanent Priests from your homes. God will bless you abundantly. Please pray for all those going to the March For Life from our Parish and Diocese. This March For Life is an important social justice action to protect the life of the preborn and the elderly. Nellie Gray, the Washington attorney who started this March for Life deserves much credit. Please pray for the repose of her soul. And pray for all who help to organize the March for Life. May our Lord bless you and our Lady keep you in her care. With my prayers, Father Arnsparger

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING 2015

St. John’s youth, as part of Souper Bowl of Caring, will hold soup pots outside church doors the weekend of January 31st and February 1st. They will join young people in churches across the country to collect money

for those who are hungry and hurting. The Youth will be donating all funds to TBOM’s “Feed a Kid Backpack” program. This collection simply asks for your change, a dollar or two ☺—it is not intended to compete with nor replace our parish’s regular Food Bank collection for Outreach Ministry (Feb 7/8). Your generosity and support is always appreciated. May God bless you!

S T . J O H N ’ S Y O U T H & T H E M A RC H F O R L I F E 2015

The national March for Life this year will take place on Thursday, January 22, 2015. Members of St. John’s Youth Group, along with several adults of our parish, will be traveling with St Barnabas Catholic Church to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C., January 21st through the 23rd. Please join us in praying for our youth and parishioners, our Diocesan priests and seminarians, and all those who will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March for Life. Please remember to pray in a special way for the unborn, for the healing of those who have suffered from the trauma of abortion, and for all people to come to know and respect the dignity of each and every human life from conception until death.

PRO LIFE“Pope Francis has seen a deeper link between the poor and the unborn. They are both among the first victims of a ‘throw-away society,’ an attitude that sees people as disposable when they do not serve the selfish interests of those with more power.”

USHERS NEEDED….HAVE YOU CONSIDERED SERVING?

We have a wonderful team of ushers at St. John the Baptist and invite you to join! We are in need of a few extra ushers for each of the Mass rotations. Would you please consider offering your gifts to welcome and greet parishioners to our beautiful church and the celebration of the most sacred and holy Mass? Training will be provided and the rewards are priceless! If interested, please contact Theresa Fitch in the parish office or at [email protected]. “How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the

good he has done for me?” —Psalm 116:12

SEE LITURGICAL SCHEDULE CHANGES ON PAGE 1

Please note that when a regularly scheduled Mass cannot be celebrated here, Fr. Arnsparger will offer the previously requested intention at a private Mass.

8:05 Rosary / 8:30 Litany & Mass Meeting Topic: “Living Heaven Now”

with Fr. ArnspargerOn February 7th the Circle of Mary

will meet after the 8:30am First Saturday Mass. Coffee and refreshments will be served.

A BAKER’S DOZENOur once a month Coffee and Donuts is going well and has grown in size since changing its name to Donuts & Dogma—although it just might have something to do with Fr. Arnsparger’s teaching and Q & A! Whether you come for the donuts or the dogma, or both, we are happy to have increased numbers in attendance and fellowship. We’re looking for a dozen or so “bakers” who would be willing to bake a coffee cake or muffins, etc., to simply supplement the food provided by the Family Life Team of volunteers responsible for that month. You would have no other responsibilities—simply be on a list that could be called upon to make an item to help with the food for that month’s Donuts and Dogma! If interested, email Palma Davis at: [email protected] or Theresa Fitch at: [email protected]

“God created the whole material world out of his love for us. Everything we can see and touch… was created for the sake of God’s covenant. We do not always love as we ought, but Gods’ pattern of love protects us and calls us back to our true natures. Marriage and celibacy are the two ways of being together as male or female in light of God’s covenant, and for this reason both marriage and celibacy are considered chaste ways of living.”
