Alleluia! Every Sunday is Resur-rection day, the

weekly celebration of that firstEastermorningwhenJesus rose from the tomb, triumphed over sin and death, and made all things new for us.

Today is a day of unity, when believers from all over this earth gather to worship almighty God, listen to His living, all-powerful Word, and re-ceive the Bread of Life, Jesus Himself. Today we learn again that God loves us so much that He can never give us enough of His blessings. Alleluia!

How wonderful is God’s plan for this day! Yet occasionally someone in our acquaintance will say “I’ve had enough of this church,” rather than, “God’s grace is enough for me.” One reason for this difference is revealed in today’s psalm response.

When our eyes are fixedonJesusasLordina spirit of humility (see Ps 123:2; Heb 12:2), then we are opened to His mercy and grace. When we take our focus off of the Lord, then God is not enough to satisfy us; instead, we turn elsewhere for satis-faction.

Benedyktrozpoczął budowęnowegoklasztoru od wyburzeniapogańskiej świątyni Jow-iszaiApollina.Długielatarządów na Monte Cas-sino pozwoliły w prak-tyce wypróbować regułe,którą napisał. Roztropnyprawodawca zmieniał ją istale doskonalił. Tak więcreguła benedyktyńskaprzeszła okres długiejpróby i doświadczeń.Dewizą Patriarchy było:Ora et labora - módl sięi pracuj. Ze szczególnąpieczołowitością strzegłkultu liturgicznego, copozostało do dni obec-nych pięknym dzied-zictwem jego zakonu.Poważnączęśćdniazakon-nika przeznaczył na lectiodivina - czytanie PismaŚwiętego. “Nightfever“ is a night of prayer and part of the Nightfever initiative which is rooted in the Catholic Church.

The Nightfever even-ing is a night of prayer, organized by youngpeople who have expe-rienced the love of God and want to pass His love on to others. We want to be a bridge between in-dividuals, parishes and spiritual communities. The evenings are organ-ized by young adultswho act as the “morn-ing watchmen“, quote St Pope John Paul II. Through Nightfever, we experience that great things can happen when young people carry re-sponsibility.

As we celebrate Sea Sunday, we are invited to remember the 1.2 mil-lions of seafarers from all nations, professing different faiths, forced to live for several months in the confined space ofa vessel, away from their families and loved ones missing the most im-portant and meaningful events in their families (birthdays’, graduations, etc.) and failing to be pre-sent during times of trials and difficulties such assickness and death.

Seafarers with their profession play a sig-nificantroleinourglobaleconomy by transporting from one corner of the world to another, 90%of all the goods we use in our daily life. For this reason, today while we pray for all of them wher-ever they are, we would like also to express our gratitude for their tough workfullofsacrifices.

Here are some of the challenges that the peo-ple of the sea face daily:

Denied shore leave and ship visitingWith the mechaniza-

tion and automatization,the turnaround time in the ports is reduced to the minimal, leaving the crew with inadequate personal time to rest and relax. Furthermore, if the introduction of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) might have improved maritime se-curity at the same time it proved to be particularly challenging for seafarers. In numerous ports, crews are finding increasinglydifficult to get permis-sion to go ashore, either because of company pol-icy or because restrictive and discriminatory regu-lations imposed by gov-ernments. However, that is not all. Many of our chaplains and ship visi-

tors are denied entering into ports or prevented to go on board of vessels to provide material and spiritual welfare to sea-farers who reach shore after weeks at sea.

We deplore these facts that are contradicting the spirit of the Regulation 4.4 of theMaritime La-bour Convention (MLC) entered into force on Au-gust20th,2013,aimedtoimprove wellbeing of the seafarers. Crews should not be denied the free-dom of coming ashore likewise chaplains and ship visitors should not be denied the right to go on board of vessels.

Violence at sea and piracy

Though the situation is improved compared to the previous years, we would like to invite eve-ryone to be more vigilant regarding violence at sea that generally is char-acterized by piracy. Theroot cause of piracy is al-ways related to political instability and it is oftenlinked to the fishing

industry. Illegal, unre-ported and unregulated (IUU) fishing has de-prived many coastal states of their natural marine resources, which created a situation of ex-treme poverty on land, making it easy for un-scrupulous individuals to transform desperate and unemployed fishers intopirates.

We request govern-ments and ship owners to put into place all the necessary mechanisms to protect the life of the people at sea and to mini-mizetheeconomiccost.

Abandonment of vessels and crews

Abandonment of ves-sels and crews is not a new problem for the maritime industry.

According to a news-

paper report from 2012to2017morethan1,300seafarers were aban-doned for different rea-sons in foreign ports far away from home, often with unpaid salaries and without food and fuel provisions for the vessel. Once abandoned the sea-farers are left themselves to struggle for food, sala-ries, immigration status and many more issues unless they are assisted by a welfare organiza-tion.

We would like to ex-press our sincere grati-tude to all Stella Maris chaplains and volun-teers who, from Malta to SouthAfrica,fromUnit-ed Kingdom to UnitedStates of America, for months and months have and are still providing material, spiritual, legal and psychological sup-port to several crews of abandoned vessels.

We call for the full implementation of the amendments to the MLC 2006,requiringthatafi-nancial security system be put into place in order to ensure that ship own-ers provide compensa-tion to seafarers and their families in the event of abandonment.

Environmental impact on the oceans

In Laudato Si’ Pope Francis says: “There is an urgent need to de-velop policies so that, in the next few years, the emission of carbon di-oxide and other highly polluting gases can be drastically reduced, for example, substituting for fossil fuels and develop-ing sources of renewable energy”

Like all types of trans-portation that use fossil fuels, vessels produce carbon dioxide emis-

sions that significantlycontribute to global cli-mate change and acidi-fication. Besides carbondioxide ships also release a handful of other pollut-ants that contribute to the problem.

We support the efforts made by the Interna-tional Maritime Organi-zation(IMO),topreventand significantly reducemarine plastic pollution from the shipping sector and in curbing green-house gas emissions from ships, as it imple-ments other regulations that will mandate clean-er-burning fuels at sea.

Finally, I invoke the Blessed Mother, Star of the Sea, to extend her maternal protection to the people of the sea and guide them from the dan-gers of the sea to a secure port.
