Notes From The Pastor’s Desk

6TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEWWW.SJBDE.ORGFEBRARY 12, 2017

In today’s Gospel, Jesus contrasts the written law of the Torah with the new attitude of the Kingdom that must motivate this law. Living the life of the Lord motivates the Christian rather than the minimal performing the law. For example Jesus says, "You have heard it said that murder is wrong, but harboring hatred is also wrong even if you don't physically kill someone.” Why? Because murder is conceived by hatred.

It is not in the action itself but it is in the motivation behind the action where the person's true identity is found and formed. When a person is motivated by love, nothing is unrealistic. Look at the spouses and family members who take care of an infirmed loved one; even the most awkward and unfavorable task is not too much to ask when measured by the love for that person.

Perhaps it is a good time to review our reasoning. Jesus did not come to abolish any Law but to fulfill it. It starts with the reason why we do what we do: I go the Church not because it is a law to keep holy the Sabbath but because I need to worship God and connect with my people of faith. I am honest and fair not because it makes me look good but because it is what God expects from me and that is what we expect from one another.

Imperfect as we humans are, our intentions, motivations and reasoning may be far from what Christ tells us. Do not give up hope because that is the reason Church is needed, to instruct us, challenge us and support each other to be the better angels of our nature.

St. John the Beloved Lazarus Ministry is Expanding

Do you feel a particular calling to help those who just lost a loved one in our parish? If so, the Lazarus Ministry, a Bereavement Ministry at St. JTB, is growing and looking for you! This is an excellent opportunity to reach out to those whose hearts are grieving. Perhaps you have lost someone dear in the past and received help through family, friends or even the Lazarus Ministry and wish to continue the cycle of giving. This is not a support group; but rather a ministry of caring for people who wish to communicate with the grieving via cards and phone calls. It requires a minimal investment in time limited to making phone calls and sending out cards. Instruction and training is given.

If you feel this is something you might be interested in, please call Wanda Gray to learn more: 502-2766

If you have any unwanted and/or broken rosaries, please place them in the container in the church next

to the magazine rack.

Computer Lab News: Our technology teacher, Miss Cindy Luce, is teaching our three year old students to use the mouse. Children first watched a play list of Bears videos to tie in with what they are learning in class. Then, to practice mouse skills, they played the Bees and Honey game. Miss Luce observed to see who was already good with the mouse and gave assistance to those who have not yet mastered this skill.

The four year old students are working on improving letter recognition and letter/sound correspondence skills. Students logged into “Teach Your Monster to Read”. After creating their monster, they worked their way through the games

You are never too young to become computer literate in this technological age!

Five of Mrs. Hart’s grade 8 students created a prayer service to honor saints, martyrs, monks, Mothers of the Early Church and Fathers of the Early Church. The other members of the class chose one or two of the people listed. They researched and provided information about these individuals to be used during the prayer service. The following items were to be included in the lesson: short biographical paragraph; how did the leader help to spread the faith?; what difficulties did each face?; what message would each give to help young Christians in today’s church? The result was a thoughtful and reverent prayer service where students learned about the early Church and its people.

The Gospel message from Matthew calls us as followers of Christ and to live a higher standard and accountability to the law. In this passage Christ reminds us that he did not come to get rid of the out laws but rather to fulfill them and to broaden them to move beyond just physical actions. Have you acknowledged this calling to a higher standard? How are you

working to live by a higher standard? It can be easy to control one’s actions but extremely difficult to control one’s thoughts. Focusing on love, both for God and humanity, is one way in which to keep your thoughts pure. An active prayer life and regular participation in the sacraments can also aide you in this endeavor. This week if you find your thoughts straying I encourage you to stop and take a moment to ask the Lord to help you refocus.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS

Sunday February 12:Jesus continually urges us to go beyond the letter of the law. He interprets "You shall not kill" (Mt. 5) as "Don't be angry." "You shall not commit adultery" might be interpreted as "Show your spouse that they come first and you love him/her wholeheartedly. Go the extra mile for your beloved today. Find a way to stretch your love.

PARENTING POINTERS

Sunday February 12: "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18) Preachers generalize neighbor to mean beyond the person next door. But today, why not take it literally. With your child, choose a neighbor. Make them a treat or do a favor for them together.

VOCATIONS

Paul writes to the Corinthians, “we speak of God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory.” This is a wisdom not of this age, and so who will speak it today? Will you speak God’s wisdom to the people of today as priest, deacon or religious? If so, “inquire within” and contact Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). Don’t forget to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!
