No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

When Jesus rose from the dead, he showed his disciples that even death will be overcome by God. In today's Gospel, he expands that to include most of the bad things that can happen to both non-believers and disciples alike.

Starting with the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem, Jesus mentions most of the scary things that people thought would bring the end of the world. He gives two pieces of advice. First, don't be fooled by anyone who says this is the end or who claims to be Jesus. When Jesus comes again, there will be no doubt about who it is. Then, don't be terrified by natural disasters or wars.

As disciples, we hope we would respond to disasters not with fear, but with love. Believers can voluntarily help those affected, comfort the survivors, or help rebuild their homes or schools.

People have welcomed strangers into their homes after a flood or hurricane has destroyed a neighborhood.

There is a saying that "no good deed goes unpunished." Jesus never says that his disciples would be given awards for their acts of charity. In the second half of the Gospel, he says that his disciples would be persecuted, hated, and even betrayed by their own families. Jesus has advice for that situation, too. He tells us "not to prepare your defense," but to let him give us the words. I suspect that he means not to worry about what you might say, lest you become scared speechless. If you let him, Jesus will "prepare" you with the scripture readings, your pastor's homilies, and your own prayer life. All of these can help open us to the gifts of the Spirit, who helps us proclaim our faith without fear.

November 17, 2019 Dear Family, Throughout our nation Catholics are praying for vocations. The family nurtures vocations. What follows are some ways families can focus on the good of vocations. Snuggle up and read a story. Add some books about famous saints to your bedtime reading. There are dozens of fascinating, age-appropriate stories of saints who were priests and religious. There is even an amazingly creative Lego catechism! Pray from the heart. In your family prayers, pray for more priests and religious. Let your kids hear you praying for their futures. "Lord, watch over our son Simon today and give him the grace to grow up to be a strong man of God. Keep him close to You, always in Your perfect will." Talk about vocations. Speak openly about vocations to marriage, priesthood and religious life. Tell kids that priests have an awesome job because they bring us the sacraments. Teach them that religious brothers and sisters make special vows to live like Jesus. Encourage "dress up" play! Just as children "play house" and pretend to be moms and dads, help them imagine the life of a priest, brother, or sister. A sheet or towel can serve as a sister's habit. A Ritz cracker makes a good host for Mass. This kind of play normalizes what can otherwise seem to be an "other-worldly" vocation. Plus it's lots of fun! In addition, there is a family prayer for vocations that follows: Father, increase our family's love for one another. May we honor each other in times of happiness or hardship, bearing with one another in love, just as You love us. In a special way, help us strive for holiness in our current states of life. Should You call some of us to the priesthood or religious life, help us to respond with courage and joy. Together, we make heaven our goal, and pledge, with Your grace, to help each other on life's journey to You. Through the intercession of the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Amen. Peace, Fr. Greg

We will try to schedule Masses in the order in which the forms are received to the best of our ability.

Please return the form with your check to the St. John church office or drop it in the collection basket at any weekend Mass.

******** Book of Remembrance: On the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls, we remember and pray for our loved ones who have died.

A grateful acknowledgement is made to the First Reconciliation preparation catechists and assistants Wanda Ashley, Vicky Gautreaux and Christa Berthelot.

Christmas Cards for Inmates

The Catholic Community at Louisiana State Penitentiary and the Chaplain’s Department are again inviting our parish to participate in the Christmas card program. Their goal is to provide each inmate with at least 5 cards and envelopes.

Anyone interested in donating new religious Christmas cards should drop them off at the St. John Church office by Friday, December 6. Deacon Alfred Ricard will be taking the cards to the prison.

We can accept Birthday and Get Well cards also. Religious cards are preferred.

******** Advent Giving Tree

The Giving Tree will be set up in church Saturday, November 30, 2019 for you to take a candy cane with a child’s name.

Please buy a gift and share the joy of Jesus’ birth with them. Gifts are requested to be returned and placed under the Christmas tree by December 7.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Are You Retired? Have you ever thought about giving one hour a week in the Adoration Chapel? What a great way to serve our parish through the powerful witness of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and an opportunity to grow in your own personal prayer life.

Being an Adorer costs nothing but the gift of your time before the Lord. If these years of retirement don’t have you busier than when you were working full time, why not become an Adorer in the Adoration Chapel. You’ll be surprised how quickly the hour passes — and the Lord will bless you.

Available hours for scheduled visitation to the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel are:

-Sunday: 4pm-5pm -Thursday: 4pm-5pm

-Thursday: 10pm-11pm -Saturday: 10am-11am

To volunteer as a scheduled adorer or substitute, please contact JoAnn Daigle at 225.687.4621 or 225.776.4865.
