Attention PARENTS of 2nd and 3rd Grade Students: There are two meetings scheduled for Parents with children preparing to receive the sacraments. You will need to meet with Fr. Jeff the evenings of November 13th and November 20th in the Church. Both meetings will be held at 6:15 p.m. Thank you to all the parishioners who are teaching in our Faith Formation Program this year! My appreciation for the time you are investing in order to hand on the faith to our children cannot be overstated. God Bless you all! Deacon Mike The souls in Purgatory are our brothers and sisters in need. They are saved, but must be cleansed from the damage sin has done to their soul. There are two dimensions to every sin committed: guilt and pain. Guilt is the aspect of sin that condemns a soul. We face judgment because we are guilty of a specific act of evil. We see this carried out on a worldly level in the court system everyday. On a spiritual level guilt brings punishment also, which in the case of mortal sin, means eternal damnation. However, a person who did not die in a state of mortal sin, but still has the guilt of smaller, or what we call venial, sins must answer for them and make atonement. Their guilt is removed by God’s mercy as they begin their purification. Besides guilt, Purgatory heals the pain of sin. The pain of sin is the marring of God’s image and likeness in the soul. It is spiritual disfigurement, the degree of which is determined by the amount and kind of mortal and venial sins committed by the individual. All sin distorts, darkens, and damages the illustrious beauty of the human person and weakens the soul’s relationship with God. Purgatory repairs the bond of divine love and restores the soul to its sinless splendor. As stated in the Book of Revelation, we must be immaculate to enter into the divine light of God (ref. Rv 21:27). I’ll use an analogy to illustrate these two effects of sin. Lets say I have a brand new car and my friend wants to borrow it. I agree to lend it to him on the condition that he doesn’t get drunk and drive reckless. My friend takes the car, gets drunk, drives around crazy and smashes my vehicle. This leaves me with two choices: forgive him or condemn him. I would be justified in condemning him since I had warned him not do what he did. However, he is sincerely sorry for his actions so, I choose mercy and forgive him. By forgiving him, his guilt is removed. Why? Because it was my car, thus his action was against me. Yet, even though I removed his guilt there is still one problem: my car is smashed. Now he has the obligation to repair my vehicle, at his cost, as a matter of justice. None of us belong to ourselves. We belong to God. He loves us intensely and we should reciprocate that love. To love God with our whole mind, heart, soul and strength is what He justly deserves from us. Sin is a rejection of the divine love we were created for. It’s like crashing the vehicle of our soul. Jesus forgives us if we are genuinely sorry but we need to go through the painful action of being perfectly restored to His image and likeness. This process is Purgatory. The fact that souls in Purgatory are being mended is truly a wondrous display of God’s mercy at work. Nonetheless, His justice is also seen in depriving them of the ability to help themselves. He makes them dependent upon our spiritual aid. So, let us grow in charity and assist them with our prayers and sacrifices. Each soul we help get out of Purgatory will be another brother or sister interceding for us in heaven. Let’s make it our goal to empty Purgatory and in doing so, perhaps we might bypass it ourselves. Onward to heaven! May God be praised and may you be blessed! Mission Statement To walk by Faith, to be known by Love and to be a Beacon of Light in our community. We are asking that you pray 3 Hail Marys after each Mass for people to come back to their Catholic Faith. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eucharist Schedule Saturday:5:00 pm - St. John’s, Grafton Sunday: 7:30 am - Sacred Heart, Oakwood 9:30 am - St. John’s, Grafton Reconciliation Saturday: 4:00 - 4:45 pm - St. John’s Sunday: 7:10 am - Sacred Heart, Oakwood 9:00 - 9:15 am - St. John’s ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Parish Office: 352-1648 Fr. The souls in Purgatory are our brothers and sisters in need. They are saved, but must be cleansed from the damage sin has done to their soul. There are two dimensions to every sin committed: guilt and pain. Guilt is the aspect of sin that condemns a soul. We face judgment because we are guilty of a specific act of evil.

Stewardship Moment: “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.” ~ 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

There are two important lessons here. First, we are called to be generous with our encouragement and hope. As God shows us mercy, we must be merciful to others. Second, joy is contagious! The joy we receive from doing good works not only strengthens us, it encourages others as well. Share the joy of living your faith whenever you can.

Weekly Prayer of the Faithful Petitions: That just as God shows mercy on us, we show mercy with each other.
