Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thanks to all who helped with our Parish Giving Tree project, and to those who help at this time of year and on a regular basis all year long with providing for our parish Food Pantry. You made so many individuals and families a bit happier for Christmas! For those who receive parish offering envelopes in the mail, you may wonder why there is both a Christmas envelope and a Sunday envelope for next week, and the same for January 1. A parish plans its budget on 51 regular Sundays plus holydays. (The 52nd Sunday is Easter, a holyday which is always on a Sunday.) This year, both Christmas and the Solemnity of Mary fall on Sundays. We ask, even though there will only be one collection taken on those days, that you make the additional sacrifice of your regular Sunday offering PLUS your more generous Christmas offering and put both envelopes in the basket on those days. Extra envelopes and schedules for Christmas are available at the exits of the church for those who did not receive them in the mail. Our Filipino community’s Simbang Gabi novena of Masses continues this week with the 7pm Mass on Saturday, December 17th and the 5am Masses every day from December 18th through 24th. We again thank our Spanish community for giving up their 7pm Saturday night Mass for this celebration. Christmas Flower offering envelopes are available at the exits of the church, for those who do not receive parish offering envelopes in the mail, and would also like to participate in decorating our church for the Christmas season. There is no special collection; please deposit your offerings for Christmas Flowers with the regular collection today or next Sunday. We will be welcoming back Fr. Francesco, who will be with us from December 20th until January 12th.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

The account of the Annunciation is cast in a traditional pattern of angelic birth announcements, alerting the reader to the divine significance of future events. Typical in angelic appearances, Mary’s reaction is fear. The angel reassures her that everything that will happen in and through her is in God’s plan. She does not question that this will happen, but how it will happen, because she is a virgin. The angel assures her that she will be overshadowed by God’s Spirit and power. The scene concludes with Mary’s acceptance. As a servant of the Lord, she is also a model of openness and receptivity. God’s plan from the beginning was to take up residence among us closer than any building could be, whether it was as magnificent as Solomon’s temple or as humble as the simplest parish church. What God intended was to dwell with us as one of us, taking on human flesh and blood. And in the fullness of time God came asking if one of us would be willing. We don’t know how long it took for Mary to answer. We only remember the important thing: she said, “yes.” “O come, O come, Emmanuel. Make your dwelling place in us this day. Let the world recognize that we are a people chosen to be a sign of your loving, merciful, justice-seeking, reconciling presence in the world. Thank you for the many ways you continue to do the impossible in us, through us. Amen.”

Individuals 70.5 or older may make a direct distribution from their IRA to a qualified charity such as St. John the Evangelist Church, Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, Archdiocese of Newark, or another Archdiocesan institution. This will not increase your gross income and no charitable deduction is needed to obtain the tax benefit. By using a standard deduction, you will receive a tax break from making a charitable deduction. For more information, contact Theresa Lynch at the Archdiocese (973-497-4042 or [email protected]).

The Word of Life “In the eyes of the world those who are in the last stages of life are somehow diminished in their humanity and should be eliminated. We must see them through God’s eyes and recognize that each and every person is created in his image and likeness and that we are all connected to God and to each other. We are our brother’s keeper and our sister’s helper. Cain who forgot he was his brother’s keeper ended up becoming his executioner. ‘Thou shall not kill’ is God’s law and it is written in our hearts by our Creator.” - Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, Homily, Red Mass, Sept. 19, 2011

Vocations Discernment Retreat Thinking about the Priesthood or Religious Life? The Vocations Office of the Archdiocese of Newark presents:

A Vocations Discernment Retreat: “Stay with us, Lord.” January 6,7,8 2012 at Carmel Retreat House

“And With Your Spirit!” Many of us still find the occasional “And also with you” creep into our responses at Mass, although our “new” response is actually a much older one. “And with your spirit” is a closer translation of the Latin “Et cum spiritu tuo,” and it matches the response that already exists in most other major languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, and German. The purpose of this greeting is not just to say, “Hello” or “Good morning.” It alerts participants that they are entering a sacramental realm and reminds them of their responsibilities during this time we will spend at prayer. Both the greeting and the reply come from the Bible. “The Lord be with you” appears as a greeting or encouragement in Judges 6:12, Ruth 2:4, 2 Chronicles 15:2, and Luke 1:28. In addition, Jesus promised that he would be with his followers until the end of the age (Matt. 28:20). In English, we use a variant of it when we say farewell. “Good-bye” comes from “God be with you.” “And with your spirit” is inspired by passages that conclude four of the New Testament epistles : 2 Timothy 4:22, Galatians 6:18, Philippians 4:23, and Philemon 25. In almost every case, Paul addresses the words to the Christian community, not to one minister. The two parts of this greeting express a desire that the Lord be present to the spirit of the entire community. Based on evidence from Paul’s letters, the priest’s line could imply, “The Lord be with your spirit,” and the people’s line would then reciprocate: “and with YOUR spirit.” This brief dialogue at the beginning of Mass is begun only by an ordained priest or bishop. St. John Chrysostom wrote, “If the Holy Spirit were not in our Bishop when he gave the peace to all shortly before ascending to his holy sanctuary, you would not have replied to him all together, ‘And with your spirit.’” Ronald Knox translated the response this way, “And with you, his minister.” A more colloquial translation would be, “And with you, Father.” In sum, the dialogue establishes the interdependence of the priest and the people as they take up their roles to praise God. - Paul Turner, Understanding the Revised Mass Texts, 2nd edition

St. John’s Golden Age Club Meetings are scheduled on the first and third Fridays of the month at 1:30pm in Conlon Hall. January 12th—Atlantic City Taj Mahal Casino. Bus departs at 9am from the parking lot behind the Little League Field at Melrose and Wildrose Avenues. Call Fran 201-385-7663. The club schedules an Atlantic City trip every second Thursday of the month. Non-members are welcome on trips.

Darkness and Light We are approaching the darkest, longest night of the year. For centuries, people in the Northern Hemisphere have kindled fires against the dying of the light, turning away the dark of the winter solstice, and leading the imagination to hope and new beginnings. It is thus easy to understand why these solstice celebrations of non-Christian Europe attracted the annual remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. Don’t let Christmas be over too soon. Keep the lights blazing into January, and savor the meaning of the feast!

Transfiguration Academy “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

May the joy and peace of this Christmas Season be with all of you!

December may be a short month, but it is among the busiest times of the school year, as we prepare our Christmas/Advent services, our class trip for the First through Fourth grades to the “Nutcracker,” Lunch with Santa, and of course our Christmas concert at Conlon Hall. With all of this going on, as well as your own family preparations, including the shopping for food and gifts and the like, it’s easy to forget the “Reason for the Season.” Although the saying is somewhat clichéd, the celebration of the birth of Our Lord can never be. The message of peace and the promise of salvation should never be taken for granted or be lost. We often hear the questions, “What does ___ want?” or “What should I get for ___?” The giving of gifts began with the gifts celebrating the birth of Jesus to recognize Him as the Son of God and Our Savior. While we are asking what does ___ want, let’s not forget to ask: What does Jesus want? We at Transfiguration Academy wish all of you the best Christmas ever and look forward to a New Year filled with faith, hope, and good will to all.

For more information, or to arrange a tour of the Academy, or to register, please call us at 201-384-3627, or visit us at 10 Bradley Ave. Bergenfield, NJ 07621
