Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today is Pledge Sunday for the 2018 Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal. This year’s appeal is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God’s generosity and to share the blessings we have been given with those around us. This year, our parish goal is $104,539.00. The Annual Appeal provides the poor with food, shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual guidance and CYO programs available for the young; insures the future leadership of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most important, brings Christ’s Good News to the people of the Archdiocese. Today’s video, which can also be viewed online by going to www.rcan.org/share, will offer us another chance to appreciate just some of these many blessings.

Our parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal when we exceed our goal, which we apply to our very tight operating budget. It is important for all of us to participate. Please consider making a gift to the 2018 Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal.

+++ Surely many of you saw in The Record or on News12NewJersey the death of long-time parishioners Gerry and Rosanne Ryan in a tragic fire in their home last Sunday morning. We mourn their loss and pray that they have already entered eternal peace with God in heaven. Over the time I have been here first Rosanne and then Gerry carried on the formidable task of keeping our parish census up to date and recording the Sunday offering contributions and preparing the annual contribution statements for envelope users. Clearly, this process will be delayed for at least a month as we try to gather the data already recorded and to be recorded, acknowledging that some small portion may have been lost in a section Gerry had recently taken home to process. We appreciate your understanding at this time.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Have you ever felt that you just couldn’t get out of bed in the morning? Perhaps there was something you dreaded that was scheduled to happen that day. It may have been a job evaluation, another day of a prolonged illness, or the necessity of caring for a sick or cranky child.

Like Peter’s mother-in-law who was bedridden and feverish, we too can be weighed down by physical, emotional, or spiritual burdens. During these times of infirmity, we can become depressed, making it almost impossible for us to love and care for others. It can even become difficult to believe that God (or anyone else) cares about us.

When Jesus heard about Peter’s mother-in-law, He took her by the hand and healed her. Immediately, the fever left, and she began to serve Jesus and His disciples. What power, authority, and love are manifest in Jesus’ presence! There is nothing—no illness, no sin, no demon—that can stand against Him.

Mark gives us this story to show us how Jesus exercised His authority through love. He loves us so much that He became a man and entered into our weak and wounded condition, triumphing over it by giving up His own life on the cross. He took on our infirmities and endured our pain. Now He invites us to receive His love and healing power. “He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.” Jesus wants to heal us in the deepest way possible—by increasing our capacity to accept in faith all that He did for us on the cross, by drawing us into an ever closer union with Him.

Ever striving to be like His Master, St. Paul sought to become all things to all people. When we believe in Jesus, partake of His mysteries at the altar, and keep His commandments, the Spirit enters into us more deeply and gives us the power to reflect Christ’s love more fully. Jesus wants to rule our activities through His Spirit, moving us to love the Lord and to serve His people with humility and compassion.

Strengthened by the presence of the Spirit in us, let us walk in the authority and compassion of Jesus. As we do, we too will recieve the ability to become all things to all people, serving them in love.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Rising very early before dawn, He left and went off to a deserted place, where He prayed...He told them, ‘Let us go to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.’” - Mark 1: 35-38

In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes—healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God.

Statewide Future Cities Competition Last week, we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. This was an opportunity for us to celebrate all of the ways our school community of faculty, families, and parishes collectively enable us to strengthen faith, enlighten minds, and transform hearts...one student at a time. One of the ways we enlighten minds is our Future Cities engineering program. Transfiguration Academy was well represented at the statewide Future Cities competition whch was held at Rutgers University in Piscataway. This competition gives students an opportunity to do the things that engineers do - identify problems; brainstorm ideas; design solutions; test; retest and build; and share their results. This process is called the engineering process. This year’s theme was “the age-friendly city”. Our students won the award for the best use of open public space, which was the theme of this year’s competition.

Upcoming events open to the public (please contact the Academy for more information): Friday, Feb. 9th: ~ Mardi Gras Family Karaoke Night at 7:00pm Conlon Hall Wednesday, Feb. 14th: ~ Ash Wednesday - 9:00am Mass at St. John’s Church Wednesday, Feb. 21st, Thurs., Feb 22nd, & Fri., Feb. 23rd ~ “Tiger for a Day” progam Students in grades K - 8 can spend one of those three days at Transfiguration Academy when the local public schools are closed for winter recess. Each student visitor will be partnered with a student ambassador from the Academy, attend all classes for his or her grade level, receive a complimentary lunch and take home a small gift in remembrance of their “Tiger for a Day” experience. Attendees will get to meet and interact with our students and faculty on a one-to-one basis. If you want to learn more about Transfiguration Academy, directly from students, click on this video: https://youtu.be12bF37YBpbs.

Registration for the 2017-2018 Academic Year has begun: Parents wishing to provide their children with a quality Catholic education and those looking for alternatives to public school are encouraged to consider Transfiguration Academy.
