Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today, Fr. Frank Iacona will be speaking to us at all the Masses on behalf of Food for the Poor. A priest from this apostolate visits us every few years, to continue to raise our consciousness to the needs of children and families all around the world. I strongly recommend this cause to your prayers and generosity. Next weekend, Fr. Bernard Olszewski will be with us as part of our Archdiocesan Mission Cooperation Plan, to speak on behalf of the Diocese of St. George’s, Grenada, in the West Indies. This diocese depends on the good will and support of Catholics from all over the world, including us here at St. John’s. A second collection will be taken at all the weekend Masses of July 3rd-4th.

+++ Next Sunday, the 4th of July, we celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. The benefits of the holiday are also observed on Monday, July 5th. Although the Rectory, Academy, and Religious Education offices will be closed, we will maintain our regular daily Mass schedule of 7a.m., 9a.m., and 7:30 p.m. on July 5th.

While most of us don’t like to think about death, it is a reality in life that must be considered. In our own era, many practicing Catholics are faced with the prospect of being denied a Catholic Christian burial by their survivors who are not practicing. The Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Cemeteries has put together a very helpful booklet entitled, “Continuing the Journey...Preparing a Catholic Funeral.” This guide, available at the church doors in both English and Spanish, includes a Pastoral Letter on “Death and Dying” by Archbishop Myers, as well as articles on “Hospice Care, End-of-Life Wishes, and Advance Directives,” “Coping with the Death of Your Loved One,” “Eternal Life—The Continuing Journey,” “Ministry Resources at the Time of Loss,” “Sacrament of the Sick,” “Understanding Catholic Funerals,” “Scripture Readings for Funerals,” “Practical Prepara-tion,” and various helpful information forms. Please take a copy for your own information, or to share with someone.

+++

Thank you to all who have made and continue to make their pledges to the 2010 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. As of June 14th, our pledge total has risen to $206,726.50, which is over 90% of our stretch goal of $228,629.50. If you have not done so, please remember to return your completed pledge envelope either in the collection basket or bring it to the rectory office, or return it in the mail directly to the Archdiocese. I count on every family to participate in some way this year.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on the Gospel

Discipleship is a costly commitment. It requires believers to put Christ and the Gospel first—even before family, friends, and the security of a place to call home. Discipleship is not a part-time job. Nor do a few hours of weekly volunteer work substitute for what should be an entire way of life, one that is so profoundly impacted by the person and mission of Jesus that he is reflected in every thought, word, and deed of the believers. British evangelist David Watson once suggested that “if we were willing to learn the meaning of real discipleship and become disciples, the church in the West would be transformed and the resultant impact on society would be staggering.” In order for us to realize and sustain this transfiguration in our lives, disciples are to take to heart the final lesson Jesus offers today: Put your hand to the plow and don’t look back. If plow operators look backward, the furrows they are making in front of them will not be straight. When we turn from the farmer’s field and apply this principle to the spiritual life, the words of Jesus challenge us to let go of the past. Whether we long for the “good old days” when things were simpler, better, and more serene, or whether we carry past regret or nagging guilt, Jesus says: Let it go. Detaching from what lies behind enables us to renew our attachment to Jesus, which fosters the perseverance we need as kingdom seekers. Jesus persevered in his journey to Jerusalem without being deterred by the many obstacles he encountered. Turning back or taking a different direction would have been safer, but Jesus, who exemplified what he asked of his followers, was determined to go forward. He invites us to make his jour-ney our own.
