SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST’S PARISH STAFF

Dear Friends in Christ: I am writing this on the patronal feast of St. John the Baptist parish. Today’s Mass was celebrated for the parish communi-ty, thanking God for all of you and for your health. On this beautiful day I want to congratu-late all of you from Saint John Baptist and Saint Joseph parishes for your care of the parish. Our budgets look really good despite the lockdown and people’s inability to pray together or work on fundraisers. You should feel proud that the whole community from each parish stepped up to fund this important min-istry. Each parish can boast of great participa-tion in the Eucharist, whether outside or inside. With the three Masses I think that we have the right balance thus far. Buster commented that he pre-ferred the outdoor Masses. Last week he was able to visit with many of you and you will notice that during the commun-ion he was the altar server accompany-ing me. Who said you can’t train an old dog to do new tricks? I counted 100+ people at the outdoor Mass, which is really gratifying. I want to address an issue that is trou-bling for many of us. That is the filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy by the diocese and thus, their restructuring. I want you to know that most of the money to cover the lawsuits is paid for by insurance. The remaining is funded by sale of properties belonging to the diocese and a small sum is assessed to the 106 parishes. I know that no one wants to have their money used to pay for the wrongdoing of clergy. At the Church of Saint Joseph , we are lucky that we have received a small amount from an individual which will cover this assessment. Money can not in any way heal the wounds left by these sinful acts but we hope that the innocent victims will recognize that we are tying to make some restitution. Our prayers are especially needed to heal any wounds that were caused. Fr. Jerome Tupa, OSB, Pastor

GOSPEL REFLECTION READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 28

A theme that goes through the readings today is that of hospitality, being concerned for others as well as oneself. In the First reading Elisha is welcomed by a woman who lived in Shunem. Because of her welcome, Elisha often stayed there so they made a room for him. And he promises her the gift of a child for her generosity. In the Gospel Jesus reminds us that if we even show kindness to the “little ones,” who are disciples, we will be rewarded. In showing hospitality we are fulfilling our baptismal call and putting our faith into action. We can show hospitality to strangers and guests, but we can also show hospitality to our family, friends and coworkers. We can do this by providing them with something they may need, or just an act of kindness. This week find ways to show hospitality to a family member or a neighbor. Be sure to accept the signs of hospitality that are offered to you. S. Betty Larson, OSB, Pastoral Ministry

MASS INTENTION REQUESTS Do you ever wonder how to go about having a Mass said for a deceased loved one? We accept one stipend per Mass. You may request a Mass intention by contacting the parish office, by placing your request in the Sunday offering basket, in the parish office entry drop box or via postal mail. Please clearly indicate the name(s) of the intention, your name, phone number and the number of requested Masses, along with $10.00 stipend per intention. Because of the large number of requests that we receive, we have the following policy:

1. Mass intentions can only be accepted for the upcoming 12-month time period.

2. A limit of two intentions per year and only one of these Masses can be on a weekend.

3. If daily Mass is cancelled because of a funeral, you will be notified that your requested Mass intention will be rescheduled.

VOTIVE CANDLES In many Catholic celebrations and rituals, lighting candles plays a role. Church votive candles are used as a symbol of our desire to remain present to the Lord in prayer even though we may not be in the church or actively praying for an intention. If you would like a votive candle lit for a prayer intention, please place a $5.00 contribution in the weekend collection or place it in the drop box in the parish office entry.
