Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Please come join us at our Parish Carnival this week, to help by volunteering, playing the games, going on the rides, or enjoying the variety of delicious food! Please see page 6 of today’s bulletin for more information.

Tomorrow we pause at our parish Masses to remember the thousands of victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Hopefully the display in church this weekend reminds us to pray once again for victims and their families, and for world peace.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Statement of Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark On the Rescission of DACA Executive Order

The decision to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive order is malicious. It is plainly and clearly wrong for this Administration to use as a political tool the lives, futures and security of some 800,000 young people whose only crime, if you ever could call it that, was that they lovingly and obediently accompanied their parents in pursuit of the dream of freedom and opportunity.

Whether or not the previous administration had authority to institute DACA does not matter. The 800,000 Dreamers affected by the rescission are people. They live in our neighborhoods, attend our schools, fight for our country, and contribute actively in our workplaces. They are contributing to this nation’s future and prosperity. They have followed the rules that have been in place, always praying that Congress would step up to the plate and craft intelligent, heartfelt long term solutions to a broken immigration system.

One can’t hide behind the term “legality” in rescinding DACA. That is an abandonment of humanity, and abandonment of talented and hopeful young people who are as American as you and I. The rule of law, first, last and always, must provide a humane, moral code to organize, protect and advance society based on the best ideals and beliefs in our hearts and minds. Catholic teaching calls all people to make a commitment to uphold the dignity of every person and to work for the common good of our nation. Rescinding DACA without having in place through Congress an equivalent and permanent protection for these Americans does not advance society or exemplify our best ideals and beliefs. It is, rather, an abandoning of humanity. Today, the Administration not only has closed borders; it also has closed minds and hearts.

Reflection on Today’s Readings

God created us in love, and it is this very love that He wants to pour into our hearts. Because we are His people - the “sheep of His hand” - God leads us, guides us, and disciplines us out of love. We are the delight of His heart, and all His works—His provisions, His compassion, and His discipline—are intended to lead us back to Him.

Out of this same heart of love, Jesus calls us to help our brothers and sisters—to seek the best for them and to lead them back to the Father. Sometimes this may include saying things that are difficult in order to protect and nurture their relationship with God. As hard as this may be, the debt of love that we owe one another in Christ compels us. We love because Christ first loved us; out of this love, we seek to build one another up in the Lord. Without the love of Christ, we risk speaking out of self-righteousness, judgmentalism or feelings of superiority. We can easily understand how such correction could result in hurt and shame.

It is not unusual that parents sometimes have to say difficult things to their children in order to help them grow. Most parents recognize the challenge of correcting out of love rather than out of frustration or anger. The goal of parenting is to guide our children to Christian adulthood so that they can receive their full inheritance and rights as children of God. In the same way, God loves and disciplines us—His beloved children.

God created us to live in unity with Him and with each other. We can know this unity because God’s only begotten Son removed every dividing wall by His death on the cross. Through the gift of the Spirit, He has forgiven us everything we need to live out this unity—to become vessels of His love and mercy. Let us pray for the grace to serve one another in love, knowing that such service gives joy to our heavenly Father’s heart.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel.” Ezekiel 33: 7

Many of us are generous with our gifts. However, how often is our generosity at the minimum level required? We do just enough or give just enough. Remember, the Lord calls us to be generous with all the gifts He has given us, to grow them and return them with increase.

St. John’s Respect Life Ministry Spiritual Adoption Program

Happy Birthday Adopted Baby ~ After nine months of growth and development your spiritually adopted baby was born September 2017. The only change at birth is a different way of eating and breathing. Truly a miracle, your baby began his/her life just like all of us, as a 46-chromosome cell. Nothing was “added” after conception to make this human being. The only thing needed was time to grow. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is just like your spiritually adopted baby. You may never meet the mother and baby but your prayers saved his/her life. A message from your Spirit Adopted Baby ~ “It’s my Birthday!” Thank you so much for all your prayers. Because you prayed for me, I got the best of all gifts - LIFE!
