A Reading from the Book of Genesis In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth

was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while awind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Letthere be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good;and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day,and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there wasmorning, the first day. And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of thewaters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." So God made thedome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the watersthat were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. Andthere was evening and there was morning, the second day. And God said,"Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let thedry land appear." And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and thewaters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that itwas good. Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yieldingseed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it."And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed ofevery kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. AndGod saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky toseparate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons andfor days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give lightupon the earth." And it was so. God made the two great lights - the greaterlight to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night - and the stars. Godset them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule overthe day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. AndGod saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of livingcreatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky." So Godcreated the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, ofevery kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of everykind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitfuland multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on theearth." And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. AndGod said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle andcreeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind." And it was so.God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle ofevery kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. AndGod saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make humankind in ourimage, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish ofthe sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wildanimals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he createdthem; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God saidto them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and havedominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every

5

living thing that moves upon the earth." God said, "See, I have given you everyplant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree withseed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food."And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it wasvery good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. Andon the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he restedon the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed theseventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the workthat he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens andthe earth when they were created. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GENESIS 1:1-2:4A

PSALM O Lord, our God, how wonderful is your name in all the earth!O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all the world! Out of

the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above theheavens. R You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, to quellthe enemy and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work ofyour fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, R

What is man that you should be mindful of him? the son of man that youshould seek him out? You have made him but little lower than the angels;you adorn him with glory and honour; R

You give him mastery over the works of your hands; you put all thingsunder his feet; All sheep and oxen, even the wild beasts of the field, R

The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatsoever walks in thepaths of the sea. O Lord our governor, how exalted is your name in all theworld! R

Sermon

The Creed Let us profess our faith in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being withthe Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for oursalvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the HolySpirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was mademan. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; hesuffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again inaccordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and isseated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in gloryto judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, whoproceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he isworshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. Weacknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look forthe resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.Amen.

The Prayers of the People Please kneel or sit for the prayers.Response: Holy Trinity, hear our prayer.

Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Celebration of the Eucharist

The Preparation of the Gifts

Offertory Hymn ‘Be Not Afraid’ Lyrics by Bob Dufford; arr. Douglas Wagner

1. You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst. You shall wander far in safety, though you do not know the way. You shall speak your words in foreign lands, and all will understand, You shall see the face of God and live.

Be not afraid, I go before you always, Come follow Me, and I shall give you rest.

2. If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown. If you walk amidst the burning flames, you shall not be harmed. If you stand before the pow'r of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you, through it all. Refrain

3. Blessed are your poor, for the Kingdom shall be theirs. Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh. And if wicked men insult and hate you, all because of Me, blessed, blessed are you! Refrain

Representatives of the parish present the gifts of bread and wine for theEucharist. Each one as they are able, makes an offering to the Lord for the

needs and responsibilities of the Church to be placed on the altar.

The Prayer Over The Gifts Read by celebrant

The Great Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer S3

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right to thank you and praise you, holy and gracious God,creator of all things, ruler of heaven and earth, sustainer of life, for you arethe source of all goodness, rich in mercy and abounding in love; you arefaithful to your people in every generation, and your word endures forever. We praise you Lord, with all the angels, in their song of joy.

#719 CP Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power, God of might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because in your tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order thatthe world might be saved through him. He made you known by taking theform of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching outto the lost. Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted thepower of sin and disarmed it for ever. In his offering of himself, he becamethe perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted as your children; by yourpardon you have made us worthy to praise you.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, tookbread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Takeand eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance ofme.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks,he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood of the newcovenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holytable, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory.Confident in his sovereign purpose, we declare our faith.

Living God, receive all we offer you this day. Grant that hearingyour word and responding to your Spirit, we may share in your divinelife. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

9
