FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa’s sleigh at the Macy’s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn’t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new-fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fast-ing, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bish-ops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the sec-ond having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season.

AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD
The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gos-pel reading, the Roman empire isn’t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand wait-ing for the arrival of God’s sal-vation. And we find Paul medi-tating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God’s salvation, which is com-ing from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can’t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the sal-vation of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
TO YOU, I LIFT UP MY SOUL, O MY GOD. IN YOU, I HAVE TRUSTED; LET ME NOT BE PUT TO SHAME. NOR LET MY ENEMIES EXULT OVER ME; AND LET NONE WHO HOPE IN YOU BE PUT TO SHAME. PSALM 25:1-3
We must be on guard (3) for the Day which is to come when all will be ful-filled (1). As we await the coming of Christ, let us love one another (2), ob-serving his covenant and decrees (Ps).
FIRST READING—JEREMIAH 33:14-16 The days are coming when the Lord
will fulfill the promise made to Israel and Judah.
PSALM—PSALM 25 To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
SECOND READING—1 THESSALONIANS 3:12-4:2 Abound in love for one another and for all.
GOSPEL—LUKE 21:25-28, 34-36 Stand erect and raise your heads;
your redemption is at hand.
GRANT YOUR FAITHFUL, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at this right hand, they may be worthy, to possess the heavenly Kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

DICIEMBRE 2, 2018 DECEMBER 2, 2018
REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD How do you prepare a heart for Christmas? It is not all that different from how we prepare any room for the season. We move some things out and bring others in: lights, candles, and appropriate decorations. We can also apply this to our hearts, both our individual heart and our community heart. Today four voices offer direction. Jeremiah calls us to remember the God who worked on the house of Israel and Judah, bringing "a just shoot" (Jeremiah 33:15) to flower from the old stump that Israel had become, replacing lifeless leadership with a new branch of the house of David. Justice would flourish for all the people. Jeremiah calls us to trust God's de-signs that go beyond the surface. Jesus' words, however, seem to contradict all this, predicting signs that will dis-may and perplex, with people dying of fright. What happened to security and justice? But all this frightening activity is not for those waiting on the Lord. Jesus' words are strong: Don't cower; stand erect. Don't let your heart sink into sleep, dive into drink, or be corrupted by carousing. Redemption is in the room, a heartbeat away. Paul reminds us that we best renovate our hearts by filling them with God's love for others. We do this by how we treat each other. A new year offers time to bring healing to damaged relationships, to reach out to someone we have neglected. And God works along with us, pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts.

This week we kicked off our 2018-19 Gap Campaign. The goal of the Gap Campaign is to cover the financial gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating our students. The tuition paid by our families covers only 66% of the school's costs. Other programs and fund-raisers cover significant portions, but 6% must come from direct donations through the Gap Campaign. For this campaign to succeed, we need generous support from you, our parish-ioners, in addition to the school parents, facul-ty, and staff. Last year’s donations ranged from $5.00-$10,000.00. Every contribution, wheth-er large or small, can change the life of a stu-dent. Learn more at sjfayschool.com/gap
