THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH

Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Fa-ther, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we re-ceived the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These re-alities make today's solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others.

GOD OUR FATHER, who by sending into the world the Word of truth and the Spirit of sanctification made known to the human race your wondrous mys-tery, grant us, we pray, that in professing the true faith, we may acknowledge the Trinity of eternal glory and adore your Unity, powerful in majesty. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

BLEST BE GOD THE FATHER, AND THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD, AND ALSO THE HOLY SPIRIT, FOR HE HAS SHOWN US HIS MERCI-FUL LOVE.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to sym-bolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev's work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

All of us have been baptized into one and the same Spirit (2a); let us live, then, by the Spirit (2b)! That same Spirit, the Advocate, who “renews the face of the earth” (Ps), was given as gift to the disciples (1) to strengthen them to go forth in the name of the Lord (3b), and to obtain forgiveness of sins (3a).

FIRST READING — DEUTERONOMY 4:32-34 The Lord is God in the heavens above

and on earth below.

RESPONSORIAL — PSALM 33 Blessed the people

the Lord has chosen to be his own.

SECOND READING — ROMANS 8:14-17 You received a Spirit of adoption,

through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!”

GOSPEL — MATTHEW 28:19-20 Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of Jack R. Cleghorn who passed into eter-nal life on May 16, 2018. Jack is the husband of Bokie Alpe-Cleghorn and fa-ther of Jack A. Cleghorn.

MENTAL ILLNESS Living with Mental Illness

Mental illness is cyclical, where a person experiences periods of stability interrupted by times of instability. With effective treatment and support, many people with mental illness are able to lead relatively normal lives, and their illness may not be evident to others. For people in our communities who live with severe and persistent mental illness, it can be significant-ly debilitating. Mental illness impacts self-esteem, relation-ships, and the ways in which an individual participates in school, work and the community. How can we be of support to people in our parish community living with this challenging illness?

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD Can you remember a time when you heard an a cappel-la choir sing in perfect harmony? Perhaps you have sung in a choir like that. The many voices blend into one voice, the many parts into unified chords, the many notes into a single song. If we can imagine that harmony for an instant, we might hear an echo of the perfect harmony uniting our one God. The three-part harmony in God sings a single song of love. It sings of the merciful, faithful love of the Father who nurtures and protects this weak, beloved human family. It sings of the self-giving love of Jesus that liberates us from slavishly repeating our sins. It sings of the unifying love of the Holy Spirit that binds us together in love and unity and peace. As we imagine that harmonious hymn of praise, we might also hear a summons to live in the harmony that the Holy Spirit empowers in us. Our God's love is so powerful that it resounds in the Christian community and invites the whole world to sing along in the never-ending hymn of love.

Stepping Stones

Thank you to everyone, who participated in a Focus Group and completed our survey for the design of our new church! We appreciate your input. Survey results will be given to the Core Team Design Com-mittee, who will:

• begin work on design proposals for our new church and project costs based on assessment results

• gather architectural qualifications and select architect

As a parish, we will submit a proposed building design to the bishop, who has the responsibility of approving the design or asking for modifications. As a parish, we want the bishop and our future architect to understand what is important to our parishioners. Therefore, your feedback will be valuable in helping to inform the design that the parish submits to the bishop and in explaining why various features are important to our parish community.
