ALMIGHTY AND MERCIFUL GOD, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that, unhindered in mind and body alike, we may pur-sue in freedom of heart the things that are yours. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today's Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn't mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus' way of service, even if it requires giving one's livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad ex-ample that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God's care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life "to bring salva-tion to those who eagerly await him" (Hebrews 9:28).

LET MY PRAYER COME INTO YOUR PRESENCE. INCLINE YOUR EAR TO MY CRY FOR HELP, O LORD.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the "Great War") on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin en-dures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier's cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or "chapel," the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for No-vember 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as "Saint Martin's Lent" or "Martinmas," that later developed into the season of Advent.

Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Lord provides (Ps) for Elijah’s needs as the widow of Zarephath shares with him from her want (1). Her generosity is mirrored in the widow in the temple who gives from her poverty and not from power, privilege, or excess (3). In Jesus, God became poor for us, offering himself to take away our sins.

FIRST READING—1 KINGS 17:10-16 The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour

and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah.

PSALM—PSALM 146 Praise the Lord, my soul!

SECOND READING—HEBREWS 9:24-28 Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation

to those who eagerly await him. GOSPEL—MARK 12:38-44

Beware of those who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces

and places of honor at banquets.

NOVEMBER November is the month in which we are especially reminded to pray for the dead, as this month begins with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. As we remember the faithful departed, we remember our own mortality also. Have you considered put-ting the church in your will? A gift upon your death can help our parish to continue living the Gospel.

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD In the Northern Hemisphere the days are growing shorter, the nights longer. Nature seems to be enter-ing a long winter's sleep. Something about the in-creasing darkness brings out our deepest weaknesses and fears. It lulls some of us into lethargy while luring others into evil. We may grow anxious about the dan-gers lurking in the dark and ultimately awaiting us at the end of life. All those fears and weaknesses come to the fore when a loved one is out in the dead of night, or slipping away into the darkness of eternal slumber. We stay awake and watchful. We keep vigil. This week's scriptures invite us not to be drugged by the darkness that seems to grow around us and succumb to slumber, temptation, or fear. We are to keep vigil, but not like those "who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13). We are to stay awake, working and watchful, confidently expecting God's light to dawn at every new moment. We are to seek wisdom, keeping vigil for her (book of Wisdom), to thirst for the Lord through the night (Psalm 63), consoling one another (1 Thessalonians). Like the wise virgins, we are to be prepared for a long night of vigil. In the meantime we are to do the work entrusted to us, free from care and full of hope.
