ENERO 13, 2019 JANUARY 13, 2019

CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one might-ier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descend-ed and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word.

PHONE PRAYER TREE If you have an urgent prayer request, please call:

Claudette Warren at 442-7965 or Elisa Victorino (Spanish) at 935-7156.

Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Pro-logue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centu-ries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in An-tioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas can-dle in the window one last time. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

AFTER THE LORD WAS BAPTIZED, THE HEAVENS WERE OPENED, AND THE SPIRIT DESCENDED UPON HIM LIKE A DOVE, AND THE VOICE OF THE FATHER THUNDERED: THIS IS MY BELOVED SON, WITH WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED.

CF. MATTHEW 3:16-17

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

On Jesus, the Beloved Son of the Father (3), the glory of the Lord has been re-vealed (1). Salvation is offered to all (2), and the earth is renewed (Ps)!

FIRST READING—ISAIAH 42:1-4, 6-7 Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds;

he shall bring forth justice to the nations. PSALM—PSALM 29

The Lord will bless his people with peace. SECOND READING—ACTS 10:34-38

Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good.

GOSPEL—LUKE 3:15-16, 21-22 A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son,

with whom God is well pleased.

ALMIGHTY EVER-LIVING GOD, who, when Christ had been bap-tized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, sol-emnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of Richard Pedersen, father of Tom Peder-sen. Rich passed into eternal life on December 28, 2018.

NATIONAL BLACK AND INDIAN MISSION COLLECTION Next week, our parish will take up the 134th annual National Black and Indian Mission Collection. Our support of this col-lection helps build the Church in African American, Native American, and Alaska Native communities from coast to coast. Schools, parish religious education programs, and diocesan ministries depend on your generosity to help them spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Our diocese also received $50,000 in grant funding from this collection last year, benefiting Arkansas Council of Black Catholics, St. Peter’s in Pine Bluff, St. Bartholomew and St. Augustine.

SUPPORT PERPETUAL ADORATION Beloved, as you can see, our Perpetual Adoration is doing well. With every year that passes, the number of adorers in-creases. Thanks be to God because we now have about 400 adorers.

At the same time, the growth of Perpet-ual Adoration has financial needs. Funds are used for copies, brochures, food, and everything people need to grow in their relationship with Jesus.

We now have a red donation box to the left of the door to the Adoration Chapel. Like the Magi who came to gift and adore Jesus at his birth, you may gift the Adoration Ministry by placing your donation in the red box.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2019!

SACRED RELICS OF THE SAINTS: TREASURES OF THE CHURCH Parishes in Van Buren, Fort Smith, Russellville, Conway, Jonesboro and Mena will present the teaching and exposition of sacred relics in January. Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross will display a very special Vatican collection of more than 150 relics, some as old as 2,000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will also be present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate each relic.

In the Church’s history, many miracles and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and many have been healed through this ministry. Please do not miss this oppor-tunity. You are encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members, which you will be able to touch to the reli-quaries as a means of intercession.

LIVING GOD'S WORD We pray as Jesus prayed that we might hear the voice of the Father, a voice that speaks of God's love for us. We ask that we might allow that Spirit,

ENERO 13, 2019 JANUARY 13, 2019

Your response to paying off the loan for acquiring land that met the site criteria for the best location of our future church is AMAZING.

On January 19, 2017—just two years ago!— the Core Team (St. Joseph Parish Building Committee) announced: “The Bishop has signed the contract and the addi-tional land for our free-standing church is ours.”

Only two years later, our loan balance is $76,511.56, and we are closer than ever to realizing the dream—construction of a free-standing church. Thank you to every-one who is contributing to the Building Fund. Your sacrificial giving is helping us meet our goal: paying off our loan on the land early and accelerating the date when construction of our free-standing church can begin.

Loan Repayment Progress • October Payment: $73,410.98 (loan & 14 principal payments)

• November Payment: $15,580.72 -loan payment and three principal payments

• December Payment: $19,287.39 -loan payment plus four principal payments

Loan Amount: $553, 211.75 Loan Balance: $76,511.56

You spoke, we listened! Last year during the input phase for the design of our new church, parishioners’ com-mon consensus points indicate that our free-standing church should be:

• Focused on Christ first. • Timeless, permanent, and unmistakably Catholic. • Unique, but still fit and reflect that it belongs in Northwest Arkansas. • A church that can evolve to meet all parishioners’ needs • A church built in good stewardship of parish funds.

The Core Team Design Sub-Committee took these points into consideration, along with ALL data results obtained from our parish-wide survey and input gathered from focus Groups, as they began to search for architects with training, experience and back-grounds in traditional design (design preferred by majority of parishioners). Eight firms were identified and researched more extensively. The list was then narrowed to five firms and Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) were sent last month. Statements of Qualifica-tions will be reviewed to produce a short list to interview this spring.

Mateo Crawley-Boevey, SS.CC.)
