THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday's Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus' teaching in Jerusa-lem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and pas-sion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any per-secution or suffering that they would encounter after his resur-rection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel's time. The encourage-ment in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ's love will lead us along the way of disciple-ship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
THE LORD SAID: I THINK THOUGHTS OF PEACE AND NOT OF AFFLIC-TION. YOU WILL CALL UPON ME, AND I WILL ANSWER YOU, AND I WILL LEAD BACK YOUR CAPTIVES FROM EVERY PLACE.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the "dwelling place of the Holy Spirit," and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one's "birthday to life," the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Jus-tice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucha-rist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference.

GRANT US, WE PRAY, O LORD OUR GOD, the constant gladness of being devoted to you, for it is full and lasting happiness to serve with constancy the author of all that is good. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
At the end, the Son of Man will return with great power and glory (3), plac-ing his enemies under his feet (2). Those whose names are in the Book shall live forever in light and joy (1, Ps).
FIRST READING—DANIEL 12:1-3 Those who lead the many to justice
shall be like the stars forever.
PSALM—PSALM 16 You are my inheritance, O Lord!
SECOND READING—HEBREWS 10:11-14 Where there is forgiveness,
there is no longer offering for sin.
GOSPEL—MARK 13:24-32 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

This week we kicked off our 2018-19 Gap Campaign. The goal of the Gap Campaign is to cover the financial gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating our students. The tuition paid by our families covers only 66% of the school's costs. Other programs and fund-raisers cover significant portions, but 6% must come from direct donations through the Gap Campaign. For this campaign to succeed, we need generous support from you, our parish-ioners, in addition to the school parents, facul-ty, and staff. Last year’s donations ranged from $5.00-$10,000.00. Every contribution, wheth-er large or small, can change the life of a stu-dent. Learn more at sjfayschool.com/gap

OUR HOLY FAMILY TREE & ANGEL TREE ARE UP!
THE HOLY FAMILY TREE helps our own parishioners that need some help this Christmas. Our Youth Ministry is in charge of The Holy Family Tree. This tree will have envelopes for monetary donations. Our Youth, coordinated by Jim Weir, and a group of adult volunteers and teens will buy the gifts, wrap, and deliver to the families before Christmas. If you’d like to donate to this program, please take an envelope from the Holy Family Tree and deposit in the wooden drop box by December 2.
If your family wishes to apply for Christmas help from the Ho-ly Family Tree, please take an application from the credenzas in the Great Hall and return to our receptionist before No-vember 25.
For questions about the Holy Family Tree, please contact Jim Weir at 442-0890 ext. 152
THE ANGEL TREE helps foster children. Names of chil-dren 0-18 are given to us from Court Appointed Special Ad-vocates of Northwest Arkansas. CASA of NWA provides com-passionate volunteers who advocate for abused and neglect-ed children in foster care. These community volunteers speak up for the best interest of these children in court.
This year, our church will sponsor 40+ children. Each child receives 6 gifts from the “wish list” they provide. If you´d like to help these children, please select a tag, filled out with your name and phone number (leave on the tree) and take only the bottom part with the child’s name and wish list. Return the gift unwrapped by Sunday, December 2, with the name tag attached. For questions about the Angel Tree, please contact Tara Marcom at 479-595-1372 or [email protected]

SMILES NEEDED :)) Greeter's Ministry has an urgent need for people who can smile. Greeters arrive at their preferred Mass about 15 minutes early and welcome people coming to worship with a warm smile and welcome. Our particular need is for 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, but all Masses can use the help. Our goal is to schedule people about once every 4-6 weeks.
Please let Joe Terry Dushan know at 479-251-1557 or [email protected] if you can help.
