Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Ob-ligation.
Mission Sunday August 16-17 A representative from Lay Mission Helpers will be speaking at all of our Masses on
Aug. 16-17. We will be taking up a collection for them to help serve their missions. Enve-lopes are available in the pews.
Lay Mission-Helpers was founded in 1955 to train, send and support Catholic laity, singles, married couples and families, in overseas mission dioceses. They serve in a profes-sional capacity such as education and healthcare, sharing their skills and witnessing their faith. Over 700 lay missionaries have served in 36 different countries. PRESENCE It is difficult to be truly present to another. We speak of
putting in an appearance or showing up. Even when we ar-rive, we are often distracted. We think ahead, or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at our best when we truly show up. We are most fully ourselves when we are ab-sorbed in something worthy of us: creative work, good con-versation, prayer. In these instances we are wholly ourselves and wholly outside ourselves.
Elijah knew this kind of engagement. He was one of God's great prophets. In today's first reading, he follows God's command to journey to that most holy place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah encounters God.

Treasures from our Tradition Over the last several weeks, the history of confirmation
has been set out as a rite following baptism and preceding First Communion. Eucharist was a sacrament of spiritual maturity, attuned to the legal age of majority, which was considered to be fourteen years or so. Medieval bishops were often generous, if not especially pious, in seeing to it that children were confirmed before adulthood.
A pattern more familiar to us surfaced in the Diocese of Toulon in France in 1748, where it was decreed that "children are to be confirmed only after receiving First Com-munion." This was an amazing shift in practice that under-mined centuries of theology and tradition by which confir-mation was seen as a bridge between font and table. The innovation swept through France and across Europe, despite constant complaints from Rome. French-trained bishops like Cheverus of Boston and Carroll of Baltimore, founders of the American church, established the practice here. The order of the sacraments was thus disrupted in France and in the United States, and remained an eccentric exception to the rule until big developments in 1910. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. classes beginning in September 2014 for all students in Kindergar-ten through 8th grade. Students must re-register for the 2014-15 year. Forms are available in the Religious Education Office. Reg-istration is on a space available basis only.

Parish video transfers to DVD needed In our parish’s historical archives we have about 15 VHS tapes that we would like trans-
ferred to DVD format. Included on the tapes are movies from the groundbreaking of the church in 1958, news footage of the church on fire in 2005, and many other events in between.
In order to preserve these for our archives we would like to convert and save these onto DVD’s. Do we have a parishioner or friend who would be willing to convert these tapes for us?
Speaking of archives… since the age of digital photos, the parish has been receiving fewer and fewer photos to add to our archives. Do you have any photos or mementos from St. Justin Par-ish? We save items that document our parish history… social events, prayer groups, meetings, liturgies… etc. Please send in photos or items you have from any year, and label them with the year and description if possible. If you have digital photos or videos, please Email them or copy them to a CD/DVD and give them to the Parish Office.

What Is the Border Crisis All About? How Can I Help the Unaccompanied Children and Families? Central American children from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are migrating alone to the United States in record numbers. While not a new phenomenon, the number of children who are making the perilous journey alone has increased exponentially - 6,775, on average, arrived between 2003—2011, and upwards of 90,000 are projected to arrive in Fiscal Year 2014 (Sept). Multiple factors are contributing to the increase in forced child migration including: a lack of strong social institutions and civil society sup-port, abuse in the family stemming from pressure on family units due to violence and family separation, a lack of viable economic and educational opportunities, and environmental factors affecting crop production. However, the overriding and overwhelming fac-tor is generalized violence and corresponding breakdown of the rule of law threatening citizen security and creating a culture of fear and hopelessness.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA La abundancia de Dios
1 Reyes 19:9ª, 11-13 Elías entra en la gruta, seguramente la hendidura de la peña donde estuvo Moisés. El lugar es importante. La pregunta del Señor es una sorpresa y un sutil reproche al profeta. Para Elías la situación es terminal: acusa a los israelitas de apostasía y asesinato de los profetas y se dice solo y perseguido a muerte, ardiendo en celo por YHWH.
Romanos 9:1-5 Pablo vuelve a hablar a los judíos para referirse a sus privile-gios, pero luego aclara que la pertenencia a ese pueblo elegido, la participación en esta elección especial de Dios, no se realiza por el hecho de ser descendiente de Abraham. Si así fuese, el hecho físico de ser descendiente de Abraham seria como un titulo de elección con el que se podría obligar a Dios a conceder sus dones. El sentido es que Dios eligió al pueblo judío para una misión especial hizo por su libre decisión.
Mateo 14:22-33 Según el Antiguo Testamento, solo Dios puede abrir un sen-dero en las aguas. Y ese mismo Dios había hecho a su pueblo esta promesa: Si cruzas por las aguas yo estaré contigo. Ambos temas están presentes en este episodio que pone de manifiesto una vez más el poder de Jesús sobre el viento y el mar. Al ver al Señor, Pedro quiere ir a su encuentro. Pero enseguida duda y se hunde. Si la fe en Jesús lo impulso a intentar lo humanamente imposible, su poca fe le infundió miedo y lo sumergió en la duda.
Nuestra cultura Pedir signos es bastante frecuente entre las personas. Los milagros y los signos de salvación a menudo se entienden a través de manifes-taciones o de sueños.
Reflexiones para la homilía Que Dios me dé un signo, parecemos decir algunas veces.
Pedir un signo al cielo es una tentación frecuente. Lógicamente, anhelamos las manifestaciones de Dios. Tener fe a ciegas no parece lógico ni humano. Lo curioso es que quizá pidamos sig-nos muy patentes, muy fuertes. Nos gustaría tener sueños revela-dores o manifestaciones lo cuentan maravillados y casi con orgu-llo. Quienes no sienten a Dios de esa manera podrían creer, quizá, que a ellos Dios no se les quiere manifestar, que no son tan dignos o que no lo han “merecido”; y sin embargo, las más profundas manifestaciones de Dios quizá se den en lo más silen-cioso y callado en lugar de en el viento, la tempestad o el fuego. Podrían ser en una caricia, una sonrisa, un momento de paz, una buena obra realizada por otro, o incluso en el sufrimiento. Lo importante es reconocerlo en ese silencio y pequeñez, en el “detalle”, y, al reconocerlo, confiar en tal signo.
Tales signos pequeños, que podrían pasar desapercibidos a quienes esperan las grandes señales de un Dios algo “mago”, a menudo son mas permanentes, por ser más profundos y más reales, que las cosas extraordinarias. Ocurren a diario en nuestras vidas: signos de gracia son la bondad de quienes nos rodean; el servicio callado de muchas madres y padres; la buena palabra de consuelo que ofrece una vecina, una anciana; el perdón de al-guien a quien hemos herido. Lo importante es reconocer y con-fiar que en esos actos se está manifestando Dios. Si de pronto, como Pedro, pensamos que ahí está el Señor, pero inmediata-mente empezamos a dudar, porque no se esperaba que el Señor fuera a manifestarse en algo tan pequeño o inesperado, nos hun-diremos. Y estaremos para siempre buscando grandes señales, cuando las señales ciertas y verdaderas están muy cerca. Si que-remos ir a Jesús caminando las sobre las aguas, no tenemos más que confiar. Caminar sobre las aguas puede querer decir hacer cosas de las que no nos creemos capaces: perdonar a alguien que nos ha herido; tener la fuerza de sobreponernos a un dolor pro-fundo; enfrentarnos con valentía a una injusticia y confrontarla; superar un momento difícil; amar a quien nos cae mal…. Cami-nar sobre esas aguas es, en sí mismo, una gran manifestación de la fuerza de Dios; pero, cuando dejamos de confiar en esa fuerza y nos damos cuenta de que, por nosotros mismos no podemos, ese signo, sencillo y fuerte, parece que se nos vela y se borra en una nube.
Si sabemos escuchar en silencio, nos encontraremos con el “detalle” de la gracia de Dios en esos leves susurros de la vida diaria. Si somos capaces de confiar en esa presencia, podremos caminar por todas las aguas; porque es la mano del Señor mismo la que nos sostiene.

15 de Agosto. Asunción de Nuestra Señora María es un símbolo de esperanza
1 Corintios 15:20-27 La resurrección de Cristo constituye un anticipo de la de los cristianos. Según el concepto del hombre representativo cuyas acciones tienen consecuencias para todos, Adán dio inicio al proceso de muerte y con Cristo se inicio el de la resurrección. Después de los dos momentos de resurrección: la de Cristo y los suyos, llegara el fin: la des-trucción de la muerte. Lucas 1:39-56 En los nacimientos del Mesías y de Juan el Bautista se cumplen los anuncios proféticos. La conclusión de estos versos reúne las ideas del Magníficat bajo la teología del Siervo de Yahve del que habla Isaías. Jesús se aplico a si mismo esta teología y la Iglesia primitiva hizo su reflexión sobre él en los mismos términos. Nuestra cultura Aunque la muerte nos entristece, en la conciencia del pueblo está la convicción de que no es algo totalmente definitivo e irre-versible. Hay una fuerte esperanza y creencia en la vida más allá.
Reflexiones para la homilía: El hecho de la Asunción es superior a la mente humana. Simplemente, no es posible, y sin embargo, la fe del pue-blo ha mantenido esta creencia por siglos. Hay algo dentro de nosotros, además, que se niega a creer en la muerte. La vida siempre es mucho más fuerte. La vida tiene fuerza permanente. La convicción de que, más allá de la muerte, existe la presencia de quien ha muerto, está profundamente arraigada en nosotros; es la convicción de que debe ganar el bien sobre el mal. En el fondo de esta convicción esta la fe en la resurrección de Cristo. Cristo vence a la muerte y por eso todos nosotros hemos vencido. Lo que nos afirma aun mas esta convicción es que María fuera de nosotros; al-guien tan cercana a nuestra humanidad, una madre y joven de nuestro propio pueblo. Vivió como nosotros y lucho nuestras luchas. Su persona es símbolo de toda humanidad, porque recoge nuestras luchas y represen-ta la esperanza de un nuevo cielo y una nueva tierra, de algo distinto.

¿De Que Se Trata La Crisis en la Frontera? ¿Cómo Puedo Ayudar a los Niños No Acompañados y las Familias?
Niños Centroamericanos del Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras están emigrando solos a los Estados Unidos en cifras récord. Mientras no es un nuevo fenómeno, el número de niños que hacen el peligroso viaje solos ha aumentado de manera exponencial –
como un promedio, 6,775 llegaron entre el 2003 – 2011, y más de 90,000 se proyecta que llegarán en el año fiscal 2014 (Sept.). Múltiples factores con-tribuyen al aumento de la migración forzada de los niños, incluyendo: una falta de instituciones civiles fuertes y de apoyo de la sociedad civil, abuso en la familia como consecuencia de la presión ejercida sobre las unidades familiares debido a la violencia y la separación familiar, una falta de oportuni-dades económicas y educativas viables y los factores ambientales que afectan la producción de cultivos. Sim embargo, el factor primordial y abrumador es la violencia generalizada y el desmoronamiento correspondiente del imperio de la ley el cual amenaza la seguridad de los ciudadanos y crea una cul-tura de miedo y desesperación.
