Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is "Saint James of the Field of Stars." There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life's journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of enter-ing through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heaven-ly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave.--Rev. El día 2 de agosto es la fiesta de Santa María de los Ángeles, patrona de Costa Rica y de los franciscanos. En 1635 la mestiza Juana Pereira descubrió una pequeña imagen de María con el Niño Dios. Varias veces la imagen se le perdió y regresaba al sitio donde la había en-contrado el día 2 de agosto. Por esta razón el lugar a donde regresaba se convirtió en su santuario y se le dio el título de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en honor de la capilla dedicada a Santa María de los Ángeles afuera del pueblito de Asís en Italia. Esta capillita reconocida como la Porciúncula (pedacito de tierra) fue restaurada por san Francisco. Allí nació la familia franciscana y Francisco insistió que los frailes nunca abandonaran ese lugar porque era consagrado a Dios. Allí María y los ánge-les alababan a Dios cuando los seres hu-manos habían dejado de hacerlo. FOOD PANTRY COLLECTION We will be collecting goods for the Food Pantry. There are many in our community who are not financially able to provide the necessary food for their families. The food collected will be distributed by the Interfaith Food Pantry. Please bring your donations on the 1st weekend of each month. The next collection will be August 4/5, 2018.

Issues arising from the update: Unable to make scheduled transactions from June 8th to July 9th 2018. Due to donor encryptions we are unable to automatically process scheduled transactions. The religious emblems program for Catholic scouts consists of medals, awards, and activities for individual scouts, troops, and adults. These programs reinforce family-centered and parish-supported religious education and promote spiritual growth and a deeper appreciation of our Catholic faith. Each youth is challenged to integrate the scouting values of duty to God, reverence and faithfulness into their everyday lives. Prayer A couple of years ago I ran the Chicago marathon which was definitely an experience. There were definitely great moments and then there was also incredibly painful and difficult moments. This is because in order to run 26. 2 miles in one sitting you have to train pretty intensely. You have a regimented running schedule that lasts about 5 months. During this time there are some runs you enjoy and others that you dread, for me it was personally the 20 mile run in which while running I felt as if my legs were going to fall off at any moment. Yet after each run and pain my body would rebuild the cells and I was able to run faster and longer the next time. You see, in order to get into physically good shape we have to experience the pain of our muscles breaking down and building back up. This analogy is similar in the spir-itual life. To truly grow in our identity in relationship to Christ our prayer at times will be beautifully blissful and at other times very painful as God has to break down our false perceptions in order to let us fully live. So when you enter prayer do not be afraid of painful prayer, because painful prayer can be the most fruitful and where God speaks to us most!

If you watch very closely, you’ll notice that the priest is moving his lips and praying some prayers very, very quietly during the preparation of the Gifts. The rubrics indicate that the priest should pray them ‘sub secreto’, which is translated as ‘inaudibly’ or ‘secret.’ But there’s really no secret, because the prayers are printed in the Roman Missal or other worship resources for the whole world to see. And even though the rubrics indicate that the priest is to pray these prayers, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t do that too! As the priest pours wine and a little water into the chalice, he prays quietly: “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humani-ty.” Then the priest bows profoundly and says quietly: “With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God.” Finally, as he washes his hands he prays, “Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.”
