MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catho-lic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and, by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On the First Friday of each month we gather in prayer and praise before the Blessed Sacrament. Following the 8 a.m. Mass and concluding at 8 p.m.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Parents of infants requesting information about Baptism may contact Father Pat in the parish office. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the second Saturday of the month.
CELEBRATION OF CHRISTIAN FUNERALS At the time of death, a family member should contact the parish office, as soon as possible, to arrange the date and time for the Funeral Liturgy.
SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples must begin preparation for their Sacrament at least six months prior to their proposed wedding date. Please call the parish office for more information.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK The third Saturday of each month after the 8:00 a.m. Mass. In the event of serious illness or medical emergency, Anointing of the Sick and Eucharist may be arranged by contacting the parish office

CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD
We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today’s read-
ings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day,
and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen,
and save us—both now and at the last. The astonishing story of
the Maccabees invigorates our faith as we behold an entire fami-
ly willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm
response echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: “I call upon
you, for you will answer me, O God.” That same confidence
appears in Saint Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. “The Lord is
faithful,” he testifies; “he will strengthen you and guard you
from the evil one.” In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long
God’s protection will endure. The children of God whom God
guards, Jesus says, will live forever like angels.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En 1769 los franciscanos bajo la dirección de fray Junípero Serra alzaron una cruz en Alta California,
dedicando la primera misión en la zona a san Diego de Alcalá. Diego, cuya fiesta es el 13 de noviembre, fue
un franciscano del siglo XV. Este santo español nunca fue sacerdote, prefiriendo servir a Dios como her-
mano lego (laico) ayudando a los pobres y cuidando a los enfermos.
Siempre fue un humilde servidor de los demás. Aun cuando lo hicieron guardián (líder franciscano) nun-
ca dejo de servir a los pobres, los enfermos y a sus hermanos franciscanos. Su afán por dar a los pobres las
cosas del convento lo llevaba a esconder sus donaciones en su manto. Una vez un hermano le preguntó que
escondía y el mintiendo respondió: “rosas”. El hermano insistió verlas y en lugar de la comida que llevaba a
los pobres, aparecieron rosas y más rosas. La santidad del patrón de San Diego, California se apoya sobre
tres pilares: 1) solidaridad con los más necesitados, 2) devoción a Cristo crucificado y 3) evangelizar en

CONFIANZA EN EL SEÑOR Estamos cerca del fin del año litúrgico. Las lecturas de
hoy nos recuerdan que nuestras vidas se acercarán a su
final un día, y podemos estar seguros de que el Señor nos
animará, fortalecerá y salvará, tanto ahora y al final. La
asombrosa historia de los macabeos revitaliza nuestra fe
mientras contemplamos a una familia entera dispuesta a
morir en lugar de negar la Ley de Moisés. La respuesta del
salmo hace eco a los gritos fieles de los macabeos “Te in-
voqué, y me respondiste, Señor”. La misma confianza apa-
rece en la carta de san Pablo a los tesalonicenses. “El Se-
ñor s fiel”, él da testimonio, “él te fortalecerá y protegerá
del maligno”. En el Evangelio, Jesús explica por cuánto
tiempo la protección de Dios perdurará. Los hijos de Dios
a quien Dios cuida, Jesús dice, vivirán por siempre, como
los ángeles.
