Catholic Schools Week is over for this year, and our teachers and students performed admirably once again. For those of you that came by the school, you saw some really strange outfits on different days. Sports jerseys, cowboy gear, pajamas and at the student Mass on Wednesday, dresses and suits. Im so proud of our entire school. The week was also National School Choice Week. You may have seen some yellow neck scarves that were given to the students. The Knights really put an exclamation point on Catholic School Week, each staff member received a gift certificate to El Sol de Mexico. A free meal is always welcome after working all day. Their generosity is above and beyond. As I reflect on Catholic Schools Week, and what it means to our school, Ive come to a few conclusions. First, our school is a very special place. In it we try to help our students become proficient in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, along with several other topics. The most important topic though is to love themselves, love each other, and to love Jesus. Even though we teach these subjects to our students at school, the fact is that all education starts at home, we just continue it at school. Its rather ironic that while preparing this newsletter I found the following prayer on mycatholic.life: Lord Jesus, as an infant You were brought to the temple by Your parents out of religious duty. Help all parents to take their duties to God seriously, to inculcate (instill [an attitude, idea, or habit] by persistent instruction) their faith in the next genera- tion by their words and by their actions, so that the faith will be handed on where the faith is first learned—in the family and in the home. Working together, hopefully, we will instill in our students and children, the positive habits they will need to grow into faithful, intelligent, and decent adults that love Jesus. Monday was a snow day for all schools in Riverton. With the generous snow fall we had, our snow plowers made huge snow- banks for the kids to play on. On Tuesday, when the temperature was warm enough, many kids were playing on the snow- banks. It looked like so much fun that I was tempted to join them. But only tempted. The good Lord is providing us with, what I hope, is ample snowfall in the mountains to help everyone get through the summer with enough irrigation water to en- sure a profitable crop and harvest. We are so very lucky to live where we do. I have visited 45 of our 50 states and have no desire to live anywhere but here. Ive been places where you have to drive for an hour, in any direction, to get out of town. Then there is a town every few miles. Ive been places where, due to traffic jams, its taken three hours to go twenty miles. Ive been places where the smog is so thick you can barely see through it. Ive been places where the summer time weather is 98/98, that is temperature/humidity. Ive been places where you pass 500 people every block you walk. We do live in a great country, and Im glad people like to live in cities, but Im also very glad and thankful that they dont all live here. I love the wide-open spaces of Wyoming. The history and geography here are mesmerizing. I love to take my horse and ride in the mountains, or a four-wheeler and drive through the public lands. I feel that those of us who call the Wind River Basin home are truly blessed and the luckiest people in the nation. All of this and to be in the company of so many wonderful, friendly, helpful, generous, and sincere people, is a blessing that is hard to top. In the spirit of justice and transparency, the Diocese of Cheyenne must report that a credible allegation of sexual misconduct with an adult female has been made against Father Michael Mary Wight, a priest of the Society of our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity. This occurred while he was serving on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in the Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota.

Father Wight (who was Brother Michael Mary Wight at the time) also served at St. Stephen’s Indian Mission, be-ginning August 2010 until approximately 2012.

If you or anyone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse by a member of the clergy, we urge you to contact your local law enforcement agency or the Department of Family Services if you suspect abuse of a minor.

Upon notification of authorities or if you have questions, please call or email Chancellor Jean Chrostoski at 307-638-1530, ext. 105 ([email protected]) or Diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator Mary Adams at 307-220-0485 ([email protected]).

In our Gospel reading this Sunday we hear Jesus use two metaphors to describe what a good disciple should be. He tells them that they are the salt of the world, but if salt loses its taste it is no good for anything but to be trampled underfoot, proof that he never spent a winter in Riverton! Seriously though I believe that he was warning them not to allow their ministry to be over-shadowed by things that are contrary to being a good disciple. We need to be steadfast and remain true to the calling that Jesus has blessed us with. He then tells them that they need to let their light shine for all to see, not just to see their good deeds but so that everyone can glorify our God in heaven. We, as Christians, are to let our lights shine not to bring attention to ourselves, but to humbly show people what can be accomplished when we allow God’s Grace to work through us.
