ST. MARIANNE COPE PARISH Roman Catholic Churches of St. Thomas of Canterbury and St. Joseph
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JULY 5, 2020
Public weekend and weekday Masses are now being celebrated at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church.
The summer Weekend Mass Schedule is as follows: Saturday-4:30 pm Sunday-8 am, 10 am, and noon.
• The public celebration of Mass at the parish for now will only be at St. Thomas Church as St. Joseph’s is not large enough to permit state-mandated social distancing. Sign-ups for weekend Masses are required. Information on Mass sign-ups will be sent by Flocknote each week and the link will be posted on the parish website. For those with health concerns, the Sunday obligation continues to be waived.
• Hand sanitizer is available in the church entrances. Please bring your own for use in the pew if needed. Pews are marked to show you where to sit while still maintaining safe distancing. Our safety committee marked the pews so as to be able to provide Mass with proper social distancing with 25% of a church’s occupancy allowed.
• The Parish O ce is now open Monday-Friday, 9 am-3 pm. Only one visitor at a time. Baptisms, funerals, and weddings are now allowed (though limited in the number of people attending).
• Confessions will be heard on Saturdays (9-9:45 am) and by appointment. Contact Fr. Rees: [email protected], 845.534.2547, option 7.

THE PASTOR’S CORNER
JULY 4TH THOUGHTS ollowing our celebration of the nation’s birth yesterday (this was written the preceding week in anticipation of the Fourth of July),
we may be left with an uneasiness about the state of our country. The recent demonstrations by many of our young people expressing dismay over the careless regard for human life that has the appearance of overt or ingrained racial prejudice, the felling of statues which recall painful moments in American history, perhaps reveals a deeper desire in the soul for the eradication of all hatred and the longing in the heart for peace that only God can bestow. My great-grandmother would have been all for the destruction of monuments to Confederate generals and the burning of the ag they fought under. Her family su ered through the Civil War, and as a northern Baptist, I would hope, supported the abolitionist movement. Up to her death in the 1930s, according to my dad, she harbored a visceral anger for the southern states. There are too many moments, however, when the national conversation seems more like the chaos in the aftermath of the Tower of Babel. Understandably, the present circumstances have not been helped by the frustrations and worries of quarantining. We can agree certainly that Black Lives Matter particularly in those instances when it is obviously denied. Indeed, our Catholic Church has protested the acceptance of abortion in our country as about racism as much as it is about the denial of the sanctity of human life. The founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, a believer in eugenics, in the 20s and 30s wrote unashamedly that minorities were un t to conceive children. Not too long ago the New York City Health Department (May 2018) reported that African American mothers terminated 136,426 pregnancies and gave birth to 118,127 babies between 2012 and 2016, far exceeding abortions among whites, Asians, and Hispanics. If this isn’t a sign that there is a grave
inequality endemic to our society, I don’t know what is. Racism, prejudice, persecution for any di erence is gravely sinful and should be purged from a society that seeks perfection or to image the Kingdom of God. However, we should not fail to appreciate the good in our society, as if to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and even thank God for the blessings we enjoy from an extraordinary history as well. Just as the Catholic Church should be described by her saints and not her sinners, our nation should not go unappreciated for the many women and men whose vision worked toward making our country more just, more charitable, more grateful for the many di erences that make her “one nation under God.” Love of one’s country—not its faults!—originates in the fourth commandment to honor father and mother. Saint John Paul II wrote of this connection: “Catholic social doctrine speaks of ‘natural societies,’ indicating that both the family and the nation have a particular bond with human nature, which has a social dimension. Every society’s formation takes place in and through the family: of this there can be no doubt. Yet something similar could also be said about the nation. The cultural and historical identity of any society is preserved and nourished by all that is contained within this concept of nation.” In his letter to the Polish people, just after his election as ponti in October 1978, he said: “Love of our country unites us and must unite us above all divergences. It has nothing in common with a narrow nationalism or chauvinism, but springs from the law of the human heart. It is a measure of man’s nobility: a measure that has been put to the test many times during our di cult history.” So this could be said of us. To love our country is to love God’s will, in truth, and the commission He gives to each of us to make it a place to encounter His love for all people in the face of its many challenges.

We pray, O almighty and eternal God, who through Jesus Christ has revealed thy glory to all nations, to preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of your name. We pray Thee, who alone are good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal and sanctity of life, our chief bishop, the pope, the vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the government of his Church; our own bishop, all other bishops, prelates and pastors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise among us the functions of the holy ministry, and conduct your people into the ways of salvation. We pray O God of might, wisdom and justice, through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed, assist with your Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the president of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness and be eminently useful to your people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of your divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation
of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty. We pray for his excellency, the governor of this state, for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by your powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability. We recommend likewise, to your unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of your most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal. Finally, we pray to you, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of your servants departed, who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives and friends; of those who, when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech you, a place of refreshment, light and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.
A Prayer from John Carrol, First Bishop for the United States, 1791
