Second Sunday in Lent March 17, 2019 On this Feast Day of my Patron Saint allow me to share again the words of St. Patrick which I had printed on the holy cards given at the time of my ordination to the priesthood:

Christ, as a light, illumine and guide me! Christ, as a shield overshadow and cover me. Christ, be under me. Christ be over me. Christ beside me, on my left hand and right. Christ, be before me, behind me, about me. Christ, this day be within and without me. Christ, the lowly and meek Christ, the all-powerful. Be in the heart of each to whom I speak — In the mouth of each who speaks to me — In all who draw near to me. or see me, or hear me!

This “speaking” and “hearing” part was very important to St. Patrick, as it was for all throughout history sent by God to proclaim the Gospel, as it should be to us, particularly in this Season of Lent. “This is my chosen

Son, listen to Him,” booms the voice from heaven in today’s Gospel. Peter, James, and John fell silent at that time and didn’t tell anyone what they had seen and heard. Later on, we know, they became quite talkative about the Transfiguration and about all that Jesus Christ had done. St. Patrick obviously was quite the talker, too. He had to have been if he was able to evangelize an entire island and baptize thousands into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The beauty of his preaching and the depth of his love influence the lives of Christians to this day, including me. Lent is our time to evaluate how talkative we are — to God and about God. Aware of what has been said by the “chosen Son” and confident that Christ, as a light, illumines and guides us, may we be the instrument that places Christ in the hearts of all to whom we speak. St. Patrick, pray for us.

May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

Lenten Regulations:

Fast: Ages 18–59 fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals. Abstinence: Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.

Mark you calendars … for a special two-night time of Prayer & Praise

Tuesday & Wednesday, March 26 & 27 at 7 p.m. Each evening there will be a spiritual talk given, a reflection on the Gospel story of the Prodigal Son. Following the talk there will be a time for reflection before Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament followed by Benediction. After Benediction the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered. • Our speaker on Tuesday night will be Fr. Brian Hecktor. Many of you will

remember Fr. Hecktor from when he spent a year with us as a seminarian intern back in 2006. Father currently serves at St. Clare of Assisi Parish.

• On Wednesday night the reflection will be delivered by Alex Hernandez, a

seminarian currently assigned to St. Mark’s (he’s the one with the beard). Alex is a third-year theologian due to be ordained deacon in a few months and priest in 2020.

Volunteers Needed The Liturgical Environment group decorates our liturgical space - - sanctuary and larger vestibule (School Cafeteria) - - to enhance our worship for special celebrations. This group is seeking new members. There are no regular

meetings, we gather in Church when needed. For more information and/or to join the group, contact Christina Sanders 743.8602 or [email protected].

Dear Parishioners, At the conclusion of each lunch period, the students say a prayer of thanks for their meal and their blessings. We call forward class prayer leaders to help lead us in prayer. This past week, we invited

preschool prayer leaders to join us in leading prayer. While this may not sound like a big deal, it certainly was! To watch the joy and pride of my preschool friends is exactly why we embrace Catholic education. Even our youngest students are learning the importance of giving thanks to God for all we are given. I enjoyed visiting with so many of you at the Fish Fry on Ash Wednesday. Thank you for your sweet words, many hugs, and continue support. During the Lenten Season, I invite you to join the students for Stations of the Cross every Friday at 2:05. We have scheduled Kindergarten testing for incoming Kindergarteners on March 26th and 27th. If you know of anyone interested in Kindergarten, please have them call Mrs. Althage (743-8641) to schedule a time.

St. Mark, pray for us. Julie Bingham

Happy St. Patrick’s Day March 17th

Jesus said: “Let the little children come to me.”

(Mark 10:14)

St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul mission is to help our neighbors in need. The majority of the families we help are single parents with children who find themselves in an unexpected or temporary crisis situation, like job loss, car broke

down or illness of themselves or a family member and they miss work and their paycheck is docked. Over the last 3 months, SVDP has helped 40 families within St. Mark’s parish boundary. These 40 families have 75 children. By helping families in need, we are helping a lot of children too. To accomplish SVDP’s mission (to help our neighbors in need) and at the same time help children, we ask for your support for St. Mark’s SVDP in the form of donations to our poor box (located near the back of church). Please give generously.

Thank you, St. Mark’s SVDP Members
