January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus

January Devotion Mary Mother of God

It is through the virginal Motherhood of Mary that the Word was made flesh. In adoring the Son of God

made man in the Child of Bethlehem, we recognize that Mary is the Mother

of God. - Magnificat

January Prayer The Holy Father’s Intentions for the Month—Prayer intention for

evangelization We pray that Christians, followers of

other religions, and all people of goodwill may promote peace and

justice in the world.

Today is the twelfth day of the Christmas-or the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod . . . ” The story of the census is found only in Luke's Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew's Gospel. We often confuse these two stories so they end up combined in our minds.

We actually know very little about the Magi. (We don’t even know

how many there were). They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrological sign (-a star or alignment of the planets), so we believe them to be astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew's Gospel, they represent the Gentiles' search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus.

We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of

Jesus' role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is presented as representative of Jesus' kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus' death.

The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.”

Historically several moments in Christ's early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana. May we continue celebrating Christmas today. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! and Happy Epiphany!

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

The Knights Korner

The Advent season is such a wonderful time of hope and anticipation. During these weeks prior to Christmas, we tend to get distracted by all the hustle and bustle of the world and forget about the many folks who desperately need a warm touch, a big smile and an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Many of these folks live in nursing homes and advanced care retirement homes. Many find it difficult to have hope for the future or anticipate the joy of the birth of our Lord. But, once per year, the Knights, under the leadership of Tim Niggel, organize a caroling caravan to six local nursing homes. This year’s event was held on Saturday, December 14 from 2 to 6 pm and had over 40 Knights and Columbiettes on the bus. Some may question the quality of our voices, but none can question the spirit of our singing! It was such a blessing for each of us to see the residents of these homes singing along with us and feeling the spirit of this special season. Even those who were unable to sing could give us a smile and a heartfelt Merry Christmas.

If you have an interest in learning how to become a Knight, please contact Larry Greer at “[email protected]”.

Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord Matthew 2: 1- 12 A gift for all people In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, “Where is the child who has bene born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

Living the Word: Perform the traditional “chalking the door” at your home. Use chalk to write the following above the entrance of your home: 20 +C+M+B+20. The letter have two meanings: they are the initials of the Magi’s names – Caspar, Melchior, and Bal-thasar – and they also abbreviate the Latin phrase Christus mansionem benedicat (“May Christ bless the house”). Questions of the Week: Child: what could you do to be like a star and lead someone to know about Jesus? Adult: What insights about your own faith have you gained from learning about other faith traditions?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: Do you think a saint would ever have a horse named Geraldine? Well, today’s saint (Jan. 5) – John Neumann – did! When he was young priest, he and Geraldine often rode through the wilderness where the Indians lived!

There were no churches there, so sometimes John had to offer Mass on somebody’s kitchen table! He also wrote catechisms and finally became a bishop and saint! Do you know who YOUR bishop is? Write him a letter today and tell him who YOU are!
