NOTHING TO FEAR

A rabbi was asked why God sends trials and troubles into human lives. “Because God gets lonely for his people” was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today’s Gospel, as Jesus makes his disci-ples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Al-mighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don’t turn to God for saving help until we’re in a bind. Pe-ter’s role today, as it is throughout the New Testa-ment, is to be a sign or to represent each member of the church and the whole church.

Our story is the tale told about Peter’s faith today. What can bolster our faith is that even when Christ calls us to face bravely the tempests of life, if we are walking through them with our eyes fixed on him in faith, we have nothing to fear. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying “Lord, save me!” is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God’s hand. Then, shel-tered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Jesus sent his disciples away in the boat so that he would be left alone to pray. Out on the open sea, the disci-ples were caught in a maelstrom. At dawn, Jesus came to them, walking on the water. This ghost-like image terrified them, but Peter got out of

the boat and approached Jesus, after assurance from Jesus that he would be safe. He took his eyes off of Jesus, looking at the great wind, and he began to sink, just as we sink into the waters of baptism, so that he can live with Christ.

Peter began to lose faith in Jesus’ call to the cross and death. He started out strong, but grew fearful and cried out to Jesus to save him. He was a ‘man of little faith’; this was the man who would one day lead the Church. Are we men and women of little faith easily terrified, lacking in belief in the power and presence of God, as Peter did? The disciples proclaimed,

“You are Son of God.” But they had no real sense of who Jesus was--- The word of God made flesh among us; God incarnated, living, dying and rising with us. Do we know our God?

Men’s Club is continuing their membership drive and their first gathering of the members will take place on Thursday, September 21st at 6.30 PM. I want to wel-come anyone 21and above to join them for this parish community outreach ministry.

After the long vacation, schools are starting their fall semester. The weekend August 20th, we will have spe-cial blessing for all students at 9.30 and 11.00 masses. Below is a prayer for students and their family:

God Almighty, in your kindness here are the prayers we offer you. We dedicate these students to you for their education, to progress in Science and all areas of learning. May these classrooms become centers where students and teachers strive wholeheartedly to stand by Christ as their teacher, and where Christ lives and reigns now and always.

God be with you.~ Reverend Rubin Reynolds, Pastor
