Pastor’s Weekly Message
World Mission Sunday The church celebrates World Mission Sunday today
reminding us that we are all called to be involved in the
missionary work of the church. This work that began with
Jesus Christ himself and through the apostles came down to
our generation. Our baptism calls us to mission and continues
as we all strive to share the joy of the gospel with those
around us. Our second reading from the First letter of St.
Paul’s to the Thessalonians, expressed this joy in gratitude as
Paul and his companions thanked God for the community they
help founded. They called to mind in thanksgiving and
prayers, “the work of faith and labor of love and endurance of
hope of our Lord Jesus Christ” among the people (1Thes. 1:3).
The work of the mission is all done with these three virtues
that endures namely, faith, hope and love.
In the Message of Pope Francis for World Mission Day 2017,
Pope Francis asked some pertinent questions that we can all
reflect upon: What is the basis of our mission? What is the
heart of our mission? What are the essential approaches we
need to take in carrying out our mission? He concluded that
the basis of our mission is Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and
the life. “The Church’s mission, directed to all men and
women of good will, is based on the transformative power of
the Gospel. The Gospel is Good News filled with contagious
joy, for it contains and offers new life: the life of the Risen
Christ who, by bestowing His life-giving Spirit, becomes for
us the Way, the Truth and the Life (cf. Jn 14:6). He is the Way
who invites us to follow him with confidence and courage. In
following Jesus as our Way, we experience Truth and receive
his Life, which is fullness of communion with God the Father
in the power of the Holy Spirit. That life sets us free from
every kind of selfishness, and is a source of creativity in
love.” (#1)
According to the Pope, the mission of the church is not to
spread a religious ideology but rather make Jesus Christ
present in our time proclaiming the favorable time of
salvation. “Through the mission of the Church, Jesus Christ
himself continues to evangelize and act; her mission thus
makes present in history the kairos, the favorable time of
salvation. Through the proclamation of the Gospel, the risen
Jesus becomes our contemporary, so that those who welcome
him with faith and love can experience the transforming
power of his Spirit, who makes humanity and creation fruitful,
even as the rain does with the earth.” (#3)
World Mission Day, promoted by the Society of the
Propagation of the Faith, is a good opportunity for enabling
the missionary heart of Christian communities to join in
prayer, testimony of life and communion of goods, in
responding to the vast and pressing needs of evangelization.
On this day, we pray for all who are involved in spreading the
love of Jesus to the ends of the earth. In gratitude for those
who brought the faith to us, we share the same faith with those
we come in contact. The second collection today supports the
Pontifical Office for the Propagation of the Faith. This office
helps the pope in caring for places in the world that need
financial support for the spread of the gospel. My
missionary order used to receive financial assistance from this
office for our seminary and some of our missions in Africa.
World Mission Sunday has another dimension for me as a
member of the Missionary Society of St. Paul because it was
on Mission Sunday 1977 that our National Missionary
Seminary of St. Paul was opened in Iperu-Remo, Nigeria. This
was the foundation of the Missionary Society of St. Paul, thus
we are celebrating 40 years of our foundation this year. That is
why we are so excited to invite you all to join us to celebrate
the Mass of Thanksgiving next Saturday October 22nd at
10:00AM here in our parish. We will have a reception in the
Family Life Center after the Mass where you will have the
opportunity to interact with many MSP priests working in the
United States and also get to hear more about our stories.
Apart from the priests, you will also meet some of our lay
group of missionaries known as the Associate Missionaries of
St. Paul (AMSP). These lay missionaries work in
collaboration with the priests and they are engaged in training
seminarians, supporting priests and their mission through
prayers. There will be opportunities in the future for lay
missionaries to actually go on mission to any of the countries
where our priests are working.
Let’s have a fun-filled Fall Festival!
Let us all come out and have fun at our festival today (October
22nd). After weeks of preparation, we are ready to celebrate
today. I hope to see many of you in the different booths. A big
thank you to Pauline Brown and Terry Mares, the chair and co
-chair of the festival this year. They and all the coordinators of
the different booths and activities have put in a lot of hours
and resources to make the event successful. I pray the Lord to
reward you all. I am also grateful to our volunteers. An event
of this magnitude requires a lot of logistics and you have all
done a fantastic job!
All Saints and All Souls Days: In less than two weeks, we
will be in the month of November. This is traditionally the
month we pray for the dead. Two important feasts come up on
the first and second day of the month. We have the Solemnity
of All Saints on 1st of November when the church remembers
all those who are part of the “clouds of witnesses” but may not
be canonized by the church. Since it is a solemnity, we will
have the vigil Mass on October 31st at 7pm in Spanish and
Mass of the day at 8:30am (school Mass) and 7pm (English).
November 2nd is All Souls Day when we pray for all the dead.
Masses will be held at 8:30am (English) and 7pm (Bilingual).
The book of remembrance of the dead is still open for
parishioners to write the name of their deceased. This book
will be placed in the sanctuary all through the month of
November for prayers.

October 29 is Priesthood Sunday! Catholic parishes throughout the United States will show
support for their priests with prayer. In addition with
great celebration and appreciation for our priests,
especially our very own Father Felix and Father
Anthony.
Priesthood Sunday was established in 2003 to express
appreciation for the devoted priests who serve them their
communities so faithfully. Such a celebration is
increasingly relevant in light of the declining number of
priests in the U.S. Only about 4,000 of the 19,000 parish-
es in this country currently have more than one priest.
Many priests serve two or more parishes by themselves.
In the spirit of Priesthood Sunday, say thank you to our
priests of St. Mary Magdalene or other parishes you may
visit for their vocation and service to the Church!

Breaking Open the Word for Families for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
By: Ginger Herrington
Reading 1: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6
I have called you by your name, though you knew Me not. The prophet Isaiah tells King
Cyrus, who is famous for allowing the captured Israelites to return to their homeland and to
rebuild their Temple: the God you do not know grasped you by the right hand, armed you, and subdued
nations under you, giving you your exalted title.
Reading 2: First Thessalonians 1:1-5b
The Gospel came in Word and Power with the Holy Spirit. St. Paul remembers the community in
Thessalonica in his prayers, commending them for their faith, hope, and love, and calling to mind how they
were chosen – through the proclamation of the Gospel.
Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21
Repay to God what belongs to God. Jesus is questioned for the purpose of tripping Him up and getting
Him in trouble, but Jesus sees through this deception. He boils the question down to the bare essentials: we
are to obey the civil authorities whom God has appointed over us; and we are to give to God His due: our
love and our lives. Give joyfully to the good God Who has given you everything.

(Misa escolar) y a

Esperanza Garza 281-513-9118 GUIAS DE LA ARQUIDIOCESIS PARA BAUTISMOS DE NIÑOS
