May Newsletter
There have been so many things going on at the school these days that it is hard to
keep track of everything. One thing that is a constant in all of the busy days and activ-
ities is the exemplary practice and efforts of our students and teachers. We have
high standards at the school for achievement and we work with you the parents and
your wonderful children to support them, engage with them and to challenge them
to be the best people that they can be. When we all work together, many great
things can happen. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Crunch and Munch is officially over, it ended with a Dance Party that saw three clas-
ses enjoying the benefits of good eating and exercise. Congratulations to Ms. Pinto,
Ms. Bellissimo and Mr. DaCosta’s classes. Thank you to our team of teachers and our
Crunch and Munch Action Team who made the posters and announcements and who
tallied the winners each week.
After School Numeracy has ended for the 32 students in Grades 3 and 6 who partici-
pated in a Math program above and beyond the school day twice a week for three
months. The students benefitted from smaller group sizes and intensive support. We
are extremely proud of their efforts.
Congratulations to our entire staff who were recognized in April for their Exemplary
Practice for the programs and supports that they offer to all of our students and the
extra support to give to our English Second Language students who are new to Cana-
da. The teachers won $750 for the school for their hard work and dedication. We are
so very fortunate at St. Mary of the Angels.
Monthly Virtues
The Virtue of the Month for April was the virtue of Justice.
Congratulations to all of our winners who are leaders in our school.
Fraga’s Fours
This past month the grade 4 students learned about light and sound. They learned about sources of light and sound as well as their properties. They read articles, completed worksheets and discussed these topics with their teacher and classmates. Students were assigned a project where they would design and build a device that produces or uses sound or light to function. They were required to use what they have learned throughout the unit in order to come up with an idea for their project. Some examples of projects included kaleidoscopes, telescopes, and a variety of musical instruments. Great job grade 4's!

Grade 6 Public Service Announcements (PSAs) In April we practiced the virtue of Justice. This month Mrs. Rebelo’s class worked on PSAs about social justice issues in groups. The group s explored several human rights and performed PSAs making people aware of some of the injustices that are happening in our world and how we can help make a difference. Written Brianna Natal
The Polish community in Canada and around the world will join together to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Poland’s Independence on May 3rd, 2018. Kids Have Stress Too!
Thank you to our amazing Catholic School Parent Council who hosted a
second workshop for the parent community for the 2017/2018 school
year. On April 19th and 26th Toronto Public Health Nurse Stephanie
Forestell led a group of 26 parents through a workshop on recognizing
good and bad stress, triggers for stress, ways to cut down on stress and
strategies and supports to help children (and parents) become more
resilient and confident. The workshops were a huge success, thank you
to all of the parents who attended. All of the parents received a compli-
mentary book to support them at home entitled Parenting Through the
Storm by Ann Douglas. Our Council applied for a PRO Grant from the
Ministry of Education to help cover the cost of the workshop.
Thank you CSPC!
On Monday, April 23rd Pizza Nova visited the ELP, Grade 1 and Grade 2/3 classes. Students learned about the ingredi-ents found in pizza dough and discussed the various toppings available to put on pizzas. Students had the opportunity to stretch out their own pizza dough ball and flip it in the air. Each student received a Pizza Nova activity book and cray-ons. Pizza Nova even delivered a warm slice of pizza for every student and teacher. What a yummy experience for all!
ECO Assembly and EARTH DAY CLEAN UP
Have you heard about single use plastics in the news lately? You know, those non-reusable products? Think it doesn’t apply to you? Of course it does, most of us use them everyday! You may not think so but don’t many of you drink from plastic water bottles or use Q-tips to clean your ears? That’s not even the intended purpose of a Q-tip! In fact, if you use Q-tips to clean your ears, you may cause permanent damage to your eardrum! Overuse of these plastics is just one of the issues we discussed at our Earth Day assembly this month. Nevaeh Supan and I, Brianna Teles Gomes, were the MCs of this engaging event where we spoke about eco friendly choices all of us can make. Students partici-pated by answering questions and were actively listening to Nevaeh Supan talk about water conservation and Melis-sa Teves convince us to ban plastic water bottles. These plastic water bottles are part of a major pollution crisis im-pacting our ocean ecosystems. Can you believe by the year 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish by weight if we do not put a stop to this plastic crisis! Furthermore, the grade 3 girls from the ecoteam performed an outstanding skit and grade 6s in Mrs.Vitale’s class (aka The Fab Four) performed a song about overfishing based on their research for social studies. We ended off with the video “Sorry Future Generations” by Prince EA, and a cheer to boost our willingness to save the Earth! It is our responsibility to take care of the greatest gift, our Earth! Grown ups before us may have made poor choices, but we are the generation who will make a change! A small change can make a very big difference! Do your part TODAY!

Invention Convention 2018
This was my first Invention Convention and I had so much fun! There were so many students from schools across the city who gathered to share their inventions. Our inventions were designed to solve everyday problems and some can even make our world a better place. We saw so many great inventions, like the Polar Case, Jackheat, Sockies and many more. It was really fun talking to people who worked downtown and many of us were recorded and photo-graphed by the media. Some people even wanted to buy my group’s invention! I had a wonderful time and learned so much!

Scientists in the School
Thanks to the generosity of
our Parent Community and
the support of our Parent
Council, we have been able to
have many Scientists in our
school working with students
from Kindergarten to Gr. 8.
Each time they visit our stu-
dents learn more about the
principles of science and are
able to connect those ideas
and concepts to everyday life.
Our students have enjoyed
every visit from the scientists.
