FROM GREEN TO GOLD

As we continue through this Easter season and celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord and before beginning another topic, I want to mention two somewhat recent deaths. One actually occurred over three months ago. It was while I was out with my own health issues and I did not learn of this death until a little over a week ago. Sister Beniti was a Holy Cross sister; these sisters served St. Mary’s for many years. Sr. Beniti arrived here shortly after her initial profession as a sister in 1940. She would serve at 12 different schools. She retired from St. Mary’s about eleven years ago, serving as a tutor in the school and then as a visitor to the sick. Our Lord called her home on January 13th. She was 96 years old and served God as a religious faithfully for nearly 75 years. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace! The other person I referred to above is Miss Cecilia Kowalik. Miss Kowalik was a long time parishioner and a long time resident of the old Hunting Towers, then Hunting Point, now Bridgeyard Apartments. She was quite the character, even at 93 years old. She was in reasonable good health until her death on April 13th; her funeral was this past Monday. At her age she wasn’t able to come to church for the last three years or so and I had the privilege of bringing her Holy Communion nearly every Sunday. Her faith was strong to the end; her Rosary was always at hand. It truly was a joy to visit her. She did often tell me the same stories each Sunday, particularly how she had been a paid choir member in a Jewish synagogue which she found to be an interesting twist of events, and how there was a previous pastor of St. Mary’s whom she was not particularly fond of, although she would never tell me who it was. Thankfully, she found me to be okay. We also want to pray for her, that her soul too may rest eternally with God in heaven. I now want to continue my discussion from last week. I mentioned the World Meeting of Families which is being hosted by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from September 22 through September 27, 2015. It is meant to be a celebration of and a catechesis on the family, which sadly almost daily faces all kinds of challenges. It is also six days of prayer, as it is so important that we pray and particularly for families. A portion of it will be held at the Philadelphia Convention Center. It is also expected to include a Papal Mass. Each day Mass will be celebrated; there will be adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; there will be speeches; The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Franklin Institute will have special exhibits about the family; and each night will include film festivals and concerts. At this point we do not have a parish organized effort to attend. Nonetheless, I would encourage you to do so if your schedules permit. I have heard that hotels are already full, so that may be a concern. Whether one attends this extraordinary event or not, it is so important for each of us to pray for families and family life. Just yesterday (Saturday) there was an event held on the National Mall which was also promoted by our diocese. It was the March for Marriage. Obviously marriage is the basis of family life. That very concept is daily called into question. More and more couples simply seem to forego marriage, seeing it as something passé in our so-called modern times. The notion of marriage has been undermined for many years now, but the attacks have become more frequent and more vicious. Our nation most recently is moving towards a redefinition of marriage. This whole thing is very serious, for as goes the family, so goes society. So we keep praying and do what we can to uphold and strengthen the family. More next week!

In Christ, Fr. Kleinmann

Good Shepherd Sunday Page Three

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

PRO-LIFE CORNER

“Just as in the marriage covenant, the love of man and woman is raised by grace to become a sharing in, and an

expression of, the love of Christ and the Church (cf. Eph 5:32), so too the family, grounded in that love, is called to be a

“domestic church”, a place of faith, of prayer and of loving concern

for the true and enduring good of each of its members.”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us.

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

VOCATIONS On this Good Shepherd Sunday we celebrate the

World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pray for holy vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life, especially for

our diocese, that God will raise up good shepherds in our midst. If you are considering such a vocation,

call Father J.D. Jaffe at 703.841.2514, or write: [email protected].

SUMMER DISCERNMENT CAMPS: Quo Vadis Days and FIAT Days are camps for Catholic high school students (rising freshmen – rising seniors) to deepen their faith, learn more about all vocations, and better discern God’s call in their lives. FIAT (for girls) runs July 12-16; Quo Vadis (for boys) runs July 26-30. Both are held at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. Spots are filling quickly! For more information and to register, visit ArlingtonVocations.org.

WEEKEND RETREAR FOR HEALING AFTER ABORTION FOR WOMEN - MAY 1-3: This retreat offers a beautiful opportunity for women who have struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of abortion to experience the mercy and compassion of God. It offers a supportive and confidential environment where you can begin the process of healing. For more info or to register please call: 888.456.HOPE / 888.456.4673 or email: [email protected].

THE MARIH CENTER is an emergency pregnancy service offering alternatives to abortion and support to women in crisis and their babies. The Center is autonomous and wholly dependent on contributions. Financial contributions as well as maternity clothes and baby needs (clothing, diapers, formula, baby foods, strollers, car seats, and other equipment for babies up to 2T), both new and used, are always needed. Volunteer opportunities are also available. MaRiH Center is located at 3230-B Duke Street, in the basement of the Carpetland store and is open Monday through Thursday from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. and Saturday from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. (Access is through the blue door on the left side of the building in the parking area to the left of the store.) ECUMENICAL MEMORIAL SERVICE AND RECEPTION Divine Mercy Care and Tepeyac Family Center invite you and your family to attend our annual Memorial Service on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. The Ecumenical Memorial Service is for those who have lost a child through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, premature birth, stillbirth, abortion, or infant death. This touching prayer service honors life and provides a unique opportunity for healing through scriptural readings, personal reflections, music, and recognition of infants who have passed away. All who suffered a loss, family members and friends, are cordially invited to attend. The Memorial Service will be at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church located at 3700 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA 22030. Please respond by Thursday, April 30, with the name(s) of your lost child(ren), your name, and the number of people attending. Names will be printed in the Memorial Service Program. Respond by sending a message to [email protected] or calling 703.934.5552.

BABYSITTING VOLUTEERS NEEDED: St Mary's Catholic Daughter's, Court Kavanaugh #54, would like to provide a babysitting opportunity once per month, at no cost, at St Mary's Lyceum. We are looking for parishioners who are VIRTUS trained, or are willing to be trained at St Mary's. If everything goes as planned, this would be a service to all parishioners, but we are especially focused on single parents and young couples who may have trouble finding free time for themselves. If you are interested in serving, please contact Reina DuVal at 703.585.9312.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS: Many dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place this weekend in the second collection, and supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in this appeal and share your resources to strengthen the Church at home.

A PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER

O glorious Joseph! Who concealed your incomparable and regal dignity of custodian of Jesus and of the Virgin Mary under the humble appearance of a craftsman and provided for them with your work, protect with loving power your sons, especially entrusted to you.

You know their anxieties and sufferings, because you yourself experienced them at the side of Jesus and of His Mother. Do not allow them, oppressed by so many worries, to forget the purpose for which they were created by God. Do not allow the seeds of distrust to take hold of their immortal souls. Remind all the workers that in the fields, in factories, in mines, and in scientific laboratories, they are not working, rejoicing, or suffering alone, but at their side is Jesus, with Mary, His Mother and ours, to sustain them, to dry the sweat of their brow, giving value to their toil. Teach them to turn work into a very high instrument of sanctification as you did. Amen.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Challenged by a detractor of the faith to substantively demonstrate his faith in action for the poor of Paris, Frederic Ozanam and six compatriots founded the Society of St Vincent de Paul on April 23, 1833. To commemorate this event the Society in the United States celebrates today, April 26th, as Ozanam Sunday. If you believe, as our founder did so determinedly, that a “…person is justified by works not by faith alone” please consider a commitment to your Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Last month our “works” provided over $8,000 in material assistance to over 120 family members through nearly 50 personal home visits in Alexandria for rent, utilities, transportation and medical needs. The demand is great and increasing. Accept the contemporary challenge to do the works of faith.

Contact our current President, Dan Gill at [email protected]; our Vice President Jim Larocco at [email protected]; or one of our past Presidents Diane Johnston at [email protected] or Mary Martha McNamara at [email protected]. Your commitment will be welcomed and rewarded.

FREE LEGAL CONSULTATION "NO BILLS NIGHT” WITH THE YOUNG LAWYERS’ ASSOCIATION

PRAYER TO JESUS, THE GOOD SHEPHERD Faithful Shepherd, You are not a hireling who runs away at the sight of danger, but Your fidelity was tested and proved on the wood of the

Cross. Accept the gift of our gratitude for Your marvelous care. Help us to hear and follow Your Voice.

Watchful Shepherd, Who protects the flock and searches tirelessly for those who wander from the fold, retrieve the lost and bring them home.

Tend and heal their wounds.

Good Shepherd, Who lays down His Life for His sheep, nourish Your people with the Bread of Life, that we may reflect

Your likeness and enjoy the spring of Living Water that never ends. Amen.

See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God.

duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for

Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones.

Shield your joyous ones. And for all Your love's sake. Amen.

CALLING ON ALL ST. MARY’S PARISHIONERS: Many of you know or have heard of The Carpenter’s Shelter, here in Old Town. Well, perhaps you may not have known that for many years, the Carpenter’s Shelter had the benefit of a very dedicated group of St. Mary’s Parishioners who dutifully gave of their energy and time every First Thursday of every month to serve dinner for the residents of the Carpenter’s Shelter. I myself recently volunteered in this effort and can say that without a doubt the positive impact is not only seen but genuinely felt by both the volunteers and the residents of the Carpenter’s Shelter! The words, “Thank You,” seem so simple yet through the experience, one really feels the heartfelt impact these words have on us all. Please look at your calendars and jot down the Carpenter’s Shelter for the first Thursday and come out and enjoy a pleasant and fulfilling evening in serving others in need in our Community! Thank You! For further information and to sign-up, please call Ed Velarde at 703.956.5088.
