We welcome back teachers, staff and students, and we pray that 2019 will be a blessed year for our school, and that our children will grow in wisdom, knowledge and love of God. St John Bosco (1815-1888) was a wonderful priest, teacher and guide to young peo- ple. He had dreams or inspiraons from Our Lady and Jesus to do something for the many young people being lost at that me. He grew up in Northern Italy near Turin. His family were poor, and he was raised by his widowed mother, who later shared in his work. To gain the confidence of young people, he aracted them by telling sto- ries, music, tricks, ght-rope walking, pung on shows, games, and excursions. He would begin and end with a simple instrucon in the faith, and prayer (e.g. rosary). He wanted to train young people only by gentleness and kindness. He said that there was no such thing as a bad boy. He could see the goodness even in those who did naughty things. One me, he even took out for the day 300 young prisoners. There were no wardens. But he had such a strong influence on the young men, that he re- turned the lot at night. It was the me of the industrial revoluon with many young people coming from farms to factories. He set up technical schools, apprence workshops, and accommo- daon. He also began night schools. In no me he had over 800 in his care. His edu- caonal system was based upon frequent confession and daily mass. He could read the hearts of his students and they knew that he was a saint. He founded the Salesian Order to expand his work and when he died he had 2500 priests in 200 houses. He said, Do the best you can and God and Our Lady will do the rest”. Times have changed, but the challenge of guiding and educang young people re- mains with us. We look to John Bosco to show us how to reach young people and to pass on faith and give them a good educaon, related to the needs they have today. Our teachers take up this vocaon again, and our prayers go with them. God bless them & everyone, Fr.
