Communion Rite

The Lord’s Prayer: “At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Now that the Eucharistic Prayer has ended, the priest invites everyone to join him in reciting the Our Father. Notice, that this prayer is to be said as a gesture of obedience: “At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, …” Recall that the Lord invites us not to be so wordy as we pray (see Mt 6:7). We must be concise and to the point, for the “Father knows what you need before you ask him” (Mt 6:8).

The phrase that follows, “we dare to say”, is a reflection on the true sonship of Jesus. He alone is the true, natural Son of God; the only begotten Son of the Father. Now we dare to call ourselves His brothers and sisters. But this is pre-cisely who we are. For Jesus united Himself to us so that we may unite our-selves to Him: “… when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are chil-dren, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God” (Gal 4:4-7). Therefore, we come in reverence and respect before the Father; not making any presumptions on how we ourselves have merited such an inheritance: “He [God] has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have re-demption, the forgiveness of sins” (Col 1:13-14).

“Our Father” - When these words are placed on the lips of our Savior, Jesus proclaims to the world that He is willing to share His Sonship with all of us. This sharing applies to us as we learn to share Christ’s love with everyone, including our enemies. We are not simply defined by culture, economics, politi-cal parties, or social status. We are a community inspired by the words and actions of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World, who died once and for all (see Rm 6:10). We celebrate this universality of sonship when we come to the reali-zation that we are not alone in our relationship with God. We are one family and therefore responsible for and to each other. AROUND ST. MATTHEW

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK “What God has joined together.” We are all familiar with these words. Because man and woman are essentially of the same substance, although also distinctively different, there is an innate desire to be connected and united. Admittedly, marriage cove-nants can be extremely difficult to negotiate and, at times, very painful to experience. But they can also be celebrations of great union and happiness. This is proven by couples who have been married for many years who still have that same twinkle of devotion in their eyes that was present on their wedding day. God designed it to be this way. By God’s power, the two become one. This is not of human design. The true intimacy of marriage is a Divine Intimacy. It is a bond created by a power far greater than any found in the two people who are joined. Marriage is where the virtue of love is most fully expressed. ©LPi THE ST. MATTHEW CUB SCOUT PACK WILL HOST A MODIFIED ‘DONUT SUNDAY’ THIS WEEKEND (OCTOBER 2/3). We will have cookies/muffins/drinks after each Mass in the Parish Hall. While you are enjoying the refreshments be sure to buy some delicious popcorn to support our Cub Scout Pack! If you miss this opportunity and want to purchase popcorn, please contact Alan Spicer (785-220-2801).

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN

YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Therein lies the...rib “If I were God…” is a dangerous way to start a sen-tence, but how many of us do this? Probably more regularly than we would like to admit. Even if we don’t verbalize the sentiment, we likely think it from time to time. Most of us finish that statement with some genius, original idea for eradicating difficulty and pain from the world. If I were God, I wouldn’t let anyone go hungry. If I were God, all wealth would be equally distributed. If I were God, war wouldn’t exist.

I imagine that, when we think thoughts like these, God shakes His head and wonders why we don’t look a little harder at the whole of His creation — because I can promise you, it’s never lacking.

When Adam had a need for a companion, God used what was available: Adam’s rib. Everything that He had put into place was already perfect, already com-plete. Woman was a new creation, but not a new spe-cies. Adam searched through all of creation to find the perfect mate, but God had tucked the answer in-side of His creation all along.

I’m guilty of it as much as anyone else — looking to Heaven with a chip on my shoulder. “Why haven’t you sent me what I need? I’ve been asking over and over again.” But have I even thought to look inside of myself? Where is the rib you are missing today? What are the opportunities God has set before you? What are the needs that He is ready to fulfill, if only you would stop wasting time lament- ing all the solutions that don’t fit the bill? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

ST. MATTHEW CATHOLIC SCHOOL

SMCS STUDENTS EARNED THE PRIVILEGE OF WEARING JEANS BY DONATING ITEMS TO THE PARISH HYGIENE DRIVE. Some of our 8th grade girls helped deliver the items to the parish.

The faculty, students, and staff of St. Matthew Catholic School would like to extend a big THANK YOU TO BILL FORKENBROCK AND WESTLAKE ACE HARDWARE AT 29TH & CALIFORNIA for their generous donation of antibacterial hand wipes. We are truly blessed by their kindness and generosity!

EARLY LEARNING CENTER

APPLES ARE IN SEASON AND SO WE INVESTIGATE ALL ABOUT APPLES. We weighed, measured, and graphed the apples, and we increased our vocabulary as we discussed the different tastes in the apples. After tasting 3 types of apples we chose which one was our favorite and then colored that box on the graph. Red apples won!

TO SCHEDULE A TOUR OF THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER or for enrollment information, please contact Melissa Meinhardt, Director, 785-233-1220, [email protected].

SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY

IN OCTOBER, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE UNIT-

ED STATES CELEBRATES RESPECT LIFE MONTH,

and the first Sunday of October is designated

as Respect Life Sunday.

A Prayer to St. Joseph, Defender of Life

Dearest St. Joseph,

at the word of an angel,

you lovingly took Mary into your home.

As God’s humble servant, you guided

the Holy Family on the road to Bethlehem,

welcomed Jesus as your own son

in the shelter of a manger,

and fled far from your homeland

for the safety of both Mother and Child.

We praise God that as their faithful protector,

you never hesitated to sacrifice

for those entrusted to you.

May your example inspire us also

to welcome, cherish, and safeguard

God’s most precious gift of life.

Help us to faithfully commit ourselves

to the service and defense of human life —

especially where it is

vulnerable or threatened.

Obtain for us the grace

to do the will of God in all things. Amen.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND AFGHAN EFFORTS The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked CCNEK to help in the resettlement of Afghani citi-zens. There are two different types of Afghani “cases,” those with a special immigrant visa (SIV) and those la-beled “evacuees” seeking asylum due to the crisis. SIV families have permanent status and are able to partici-pate in programs like temporary assistance for needy families, food stamps, etc., as they begin building a new life in the United States. Those seeking asylum receive a one-time “welcome money” of roughly $1,200 but are not eligible to participate in governmental programs like those with permanent status. This makes our asylum seekers even more in need of support from agencies like CCNEK. We will be resettling both in our area. More information is available at https://catholiccharitiesks.org/afghanistan-humanitarian-crisis/. If you are interested in assisting CCNEK in our mission to “Welcome the Stranger Among Us,” we are in need of household donations, financial dona-tions, medical care, legal assistance, rental apartments or houses, and volunteers. You can contact us at [email protected] to donate or volunteer.
