They were troubled, anxious, and fearful—much like each one of us at some point in our lives. Christ repeated the words, “Peace be with you.” But then he added, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (Jn 20:19-23). What an extraordinary gift! The Risen Lord was proclaiming that all the suffering he had just endured was in order to make available the gifts of salvation and forgiveness. He wanted the Apostles to receive these gifts. He wanted them to become apostles of this forgiveness to others. In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, also called confes- sion, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in him. In this sacrament, he prepares us to receive him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacrificial love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go at least once a year. The Church also encourages frequent confession in or- der to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the Church. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, we seek forgiveness and repentance, let go of patterns of sin, grow in the life of virtue, and witness to a joyful conversion. (Continued on page 2)

Rediscovering the Sacrament of Penance God’s Gift of Forgiveness A Pastoral Exhortation on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation

(cont’d) Since the graces of the sacrament are so similar to the purpose of the New Evangelization, Pope Benedict XVI has said, “The New Evangelization . . . begins in the confessional!” We bishops and priests are eager to help you if you experience difficulty, hesitation, or uncertainty about approaching the Lord in this sacrament. If you have not received this healing sacrament in a long time, we are ready to welcome you. We, whom Christ has ordained to minister this forgiveness in his name, are also approaching this sacrament, as both penitents and ministers, throughout our lives and at this special moment of grace during Lent. We want to offer ourselves to you as forgiven sinners seeking to serve in the Lord’s name. During Lent—in addition to the various penitential services during which individual confession takes place—we bishops and priests will be making ourselves available often for the individual celebration of this sacrament. We pray that through the work of the Holy Spirit, all Catholics—clergy and laity—will respond to the call of the New Evangelization to encounter Christ in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Come to the Lord and experience the extraordinary grace of his forgiveness!

“He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must

celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and

has been found.’” (Lk 15: 31-32)

(Lc 15:31-32)

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

"For we walk by faith and not by sight. "Those words of great insight are in today's second reading from St. Paul's second letter to the Corinthians. Hymns have been written with that theme as the focal point. It is often quoted and used as a ref-erence point for how we view our faith and the many mysteries of the Church.

We could also paral-lel Paul's statement by saying "We walk by hope, not by sight." Through Christ's Cruci-fixion we believe, we know, that Jesus offered us the possibility and the hope of life everlasting. We live in a world that puts great credibility to what the eye can see.

That is why the visual and social media seem to have such a huge impact on people's lives.

However, as Chris-tians, we also know that the conclusions of the heart are as valid as those of the mind. Yet this is one of the most difficult aspects of our relation-ship to God and to one another. Faith implies trust. Without that aware-ness that there is more truth to truth than what seems obvious, we can-not pursue discipleship and stewardship the way Jesus taught us to live. Our faith - our commit-ment to living as Chris-tians - must pervade eve-rything in our lives, eve-rything we do every day.

Being Christian is seek-ing Jesus, not looking for seers, pope says VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Being Christian is looking for, following and imitat-ing Jesus Christ -- nothing more, Pope Francis said at his morning Mass. Be-ing Christian is not looking for those who always have something new to reveal, saying, "'Where are the seers who will tell us today about the letter that Our Lady will send at four o'clock in the after-noon?' for example," he said. "This is not Christian identity. God's final word is called 'Jesus' and noth-ing more," the pope said June 9 during the Mass in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Chris-tian identity is "beautiful"

and concrete, he said, according to Vatican Ra-dio; it is seen in a living witness to Christ, the Be-atitudes and the "Judgment of the Na-tions," which refers to feeding the hungry, cloth-ing the naked and the other actions mentioned in Matthew 25:31-46. How-ever, because of human sin, Christians may not be faithful to their identity and may be tempted to weaken or misplace it, the pope said. The danger of a weakened identity is seen when someone "goes from witness to ideas, wa-tering down witness: 'Well, sure, I am Christian. Christianity is like so, a beautiful idea. I pray to God,'" the pope said.

GOD’S WORD TODAY In today’s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God’s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the parable of the mustard seed, Je-sus proclaims a marvel-ous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disci-ples, as insignificant as they may have felt,

would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God’s king-dom cannot be predicted. We must trust the work of the Master’s hand as we, the mustard plant, grow and grow.

O Lord, And let light perpetual

shine upon him: May his soul,

and the souls of all the departed,

through the mercy of God, Rest in peace, and may they rise in glory.

Amen.
