Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish, THE VEILING OF CROSSES AND STATUES DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF LENT For those who have been attending mass regularly, you must have noticed that starting today (Fifth Sunday of Lent) the crucifixes and most the other images and statues in our Church have been covered in purple cloth. Now, why is this so? What is its significance? Well, the Fifth Sunday of Lent is the beginning of the two weeks of 'PASSIONTIDE' in the Church. The first week is known as Passion Week and the second week which we shall begin in seven days on Palm Sunday is known as 'HOLY WEEK'. Going through the readings of Passion Week, you'll notice the INCREASING HATRED the people had for Christ. They accused him of being a blasphemer, sorcerer, being possessed by an evil spirit and so on. The old Gospel reading for Passion Sunday (fifth Sunday of Lent) from the eighth chapter of Saint John's Gospel ends with these words: “They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.”-John 8:59. (Continued on page 2)

Chrism Mass On Thursday, March 17th at 5:30PM, Archbishop Cordileone will celebrate the Chrism
Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral. This is a beautiful celebration of the blessing of all the oils used in sacramental service throughout the year. All the priests from the Archdiocese will be there, please note: the Blessed Sacrament will be repose after the 12:05 Mass. Msgr. John Talesfore
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish, (cont’d) According to Saint Augustine, at this moment when "Jesus hid himself," Christ in fact became invisible by virtue of His divine nature. Saint Augustine writes: He does not hide Himself in a corner of the temple, as if afraid, or running into a cottage, or turning aside behind a wall or column: but by His Divine Power making Himself invisible, He PASSED THROUGH THEIR MIDST. To help signify this mystery, Catholic statues and images are veiled with purple cloth on the evening before Passion Sunday. Jesus "hides Himself." One cross will be unveiled for Veneration (Kissing of the Crucifix) on GOOD FRIDAY. The other images and statues are unveiled until Holy Saturday. This is the moment at which the fast of Lent ends and the glory of Easter begins. This unveiling shows us that Christ has revealed himself as risen and victorious. So in Summary: The veiling of the crucifixes and statues symbolizes the fact that Christ's Divinity was hidden at the time of His Passion and death, the very essence of “Passiontide.”
Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor
Jubilee Year of Mercy Fifth Sunday of Lent
How fitting that the first Sunday Angelus of Pope Francis, who has made mercy his papacy’s theme, took place the last time today’s Gospel about Jesus’ encounter with the adulterous woman was proclaimed. “Jesus’ attitude is striking,” Francis declared. “We do not hear words of scorn or condemnation, only words of love, of mercy, an invitation to conversion: ‘Neither do I condemn you’ ” (John 8:11). Francis continued: “God’s face is the face of a merciful father who is always patient. Have you thought about God’s patience, the patience [God] has with each one of us? That is [God’s] mercy. [God] always has patience, patience with us . . . understands us . . . waits for us . . . does not tire of forgiving us” if we return ‘with a contrite heart” (Pope Francis, Angelus address, March 17, 2013). Parishes preparing catechumens may proclaim Jesus’ raising of Lazarus. Referring to Lazarus, and all those “raised” from the “death” of sin, Jesus defines the community’s “mission of mercy”— “Untie him and let him go” (John 11:44).
