Faith Fact
Why do the church bells ring at noon and 6:00 o’clock??
It is a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages (circa 1400 A.D.) The bells
remind Catholics of the words of the Angel Gabriel to Mary, announcing the
Incarnation (conception) of the Lord and Mary’s response (hence the title
‘Angelus’) Just as monks have always been called to prayer at specific times
of the day, so all Christians are called to share in ‘common’ prayer with them.
At first, it was 3 times a day (6:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.) It has since
been reduced to twice a day.
