celebrate the third Sunday in Lent.
On the tetrapod, there is both the
icon of the Annunciation and a
Cross surrounded by a flower
wreath. During the Liturgy of
St. Basil, you will notice that there
are two Troparians, Kontakions,
Epistle and Gospel readings.

ST NICHOLAS CHURCH
LENTEN FOOD DRIVE
Mike and Evelyn Kormanik
passed on a great idea called the
“40 Cans of Lent Food Drive”.
While many Orthodox Christians
fast during Lent, for some of our food-insecure
neighbors, going without food is not a choice. The
goal is to set aside one can (or other non-perishable
food item) per day during Lent and bring your
accumulated food donation with your basket on
Pascha. To help out, there are sturdy shopping bags in
#2 Hall to place your food. “40 Cans for Lent” is an
opportunity to take a small sacrifice and turn it into a
big difference in the lives of others
PARASTAS/PANACHIDA & HRAMOTA FORMS
Both forms are available on top of the radiator in back
of the church. Please give the completed forms to
Father Michael or drop them off in the office.
NO ENVELOPES TO REMEMBER! Have your
donation charged to your credit card once a month.
Sign-up in the office.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPARE CHANGE?
Remember that big bottle just outside the entrance of
the church? The money raised from this collection
goes to the building fund for a rainy day (or to repair
damage from a rainy day). Before going into church,
why not throw in some of your spare change?

MAY 5TH
GREAT AND HOLY PASCHA
EVENT ALERT!
The first Sunday in May is the Five Boro Bike Tour. Road
closures effectively block many ways into Manhattan and
those that aren’t blocked are very congested. This year,
since Pascha is on the same day, it is very important to
start planning your route into the City early! Here is a race
map: http://www.nycbikemaps.com/spokes/five-boro-bike-tour-
2013/ As you can see, the West Side Highway is clear so that has been a
great route for many from New Jersey and up-state. We will post a
complete list of street and road closures when available.

Communion Breakfast
Sunday, April 14th
Adults: $10 Under 18-Free
WHAT IS A “COMMUNION BREAKFAST”?
Next week, the Altar Society will be hosting the Annual Communion
Breakfast after Liturgy. There is some confusion as to exactly why this
meal is prepared during Lent. Is it for the children having their first
communion? Is it a tradition in the Orthodox Church? Is it a fundraiser?
The answer is “no”, but the questions are reasonable. This annual meal,
prepared during the middle of Lent, was the idea of +Met. Nicholas while
he was pastor at St. Nicholas. It has been explained that his goal was to
have a Sunday set aside during Lent to focus on fasting, prayer and
confession during the final weeks leading up to Holy Week. He wanted us
to break bread together, encourage each other and to make sure that each of
us was planning to go to confession in order to partake of the Sacrament of
Communion (thus the name) during Holy Week. He started a beautiful
St. Nicholas Church tradition that has continued for many, many years.
We hope you will be at church next week and will join us in a Lenten meal
prepared by the Altar Society. To help us plan for the amount of food
needed, please sign your name on the bulletin board in #2 Hall. The cost is
$10 for adults. Children and teenagers 18 and under are free.
Like branches on a tree, we grow in different directions, yet our roots at St. Nicholas Church will always
remain our common bond. We live in hope, we grow in faith, and we give in love.
WHAT IS THE TREE OF LIFE?
The Tree of Life is the elegant tree sculpture mounted in Hall #2. The tree is a part of a
perpetual fundraising program that creates a living legacy to honor the lives of the many
people that were, are and will be a vital part of St. Nicholas Church as well as a way to
help our church remain financially solvent for future generations. Our hope is that the
proceeds from the Tree of Life will give our children a great gift for the future –
freedom from the monthly expenses of a large mortgage.
UPDATE: Last year, the Tree of Life Appeal was announced. To date, we have
commitments for over $55,000 which is being used towards the reduction of our outstanding loans and
capital expenses. Several large and small stones and leaves are being engraved now and will soon be
mounted on the wall display.
HOW DOES THE TREE OF LIFE WORK?
Each stone and leaf has a set donation amount. Families then submit an inscription
that is engraved on the stone or leaf for permanent display. The stones represent
the bedrock of St. Nicholas and offer the highest level of giving ($10,000 and
$5,000). The leaves represent important people and events in family’s lives.
A leaf is a donation of $250.
HOW CAN I DONATE A STONE OR LEAF?
There are informational packets located in back of the Church and in the Church
office with detailed information on the tree sculpture and how to donate. You will
be asked to create a personal message to be engraved on the stone or leaf.
WHAT IF I CAN’T AFFORD TO MAKE A LARGE SINGLE DONATION?
To help you budget, there are several donation options including installment
payments each year, monthly payments by credit card and splitting payment
between family members.
If you have any questions, please contact:
Dawn Krzyzanowski - [email protected] or Kim Busel - [email protected]
St. Nicholas Church would like
to acknowledge and thank
Pat Visavaverasak
for her recent donation of
$10,500
to the Tree of Life Appeal in
memory of her beloved,
Bill Wislosky
May his memory be eternal!

A Loving Tribute to Mary Medvecky
You are truly a remarkable woman and Mom.
You offered us the world and the encouragement to explore it.
You showed us how to live a joyful life by cherishing everything in it.
And, you were our rock, our security, our belief that good in the world exists
even when reality seemed too overwhelming to bear.
Your generosity and unending service to our family and at St. Nicholas Church
taught us how to reach out and help others in need with God as our center.
Your positive attitude and resilience through two bouts of cancer taught us
how to handle adversity with grace, determination, and faith.
Your work ethic taught us that our life journey must include
developing our minds while following our hearts.
Your outgoing nature and adventurous soul taught us that
learning new things and making new friends can happen at any age.
Even ninety years young.
You have been tough when you had to…loving, always
Never an unkind word, just an extra hand
To help, to hug, to pray
Yours was the voice we heard when you sang in the choir.
Your sweet smile is your light that shines forth
and we promise, it will always
shine brightly within us
because your life
has taught
us how
to be.
