24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: "Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?" Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus' parable in today's Gospel reminds us of God's compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to for-give others in the same way.

There are many kinds of alms the giving of which helps us to obtain pardon for our sins; but none is greater

than that by which we forgive from our heart a sin that someone has committed against us.

2017 ANNUAL JOURNAL

For the past 52 years, our Annual Journal has been the major fundraiser of St. Nicholas Church. That is because so many families have supported it throughout these years. It began on times when there were no computerized printers, when everything was done by hand, and every contract was made personally. There was a lot of work in-volved in the creation of each Journal. And the same com-mitment continues to this day.

We invite you to

— once again or for the first time — be part of St. Nicholas’ history

by sponsoring a page in this 2017 ANNUAL JOURNAL.

You might sponsor: 1) - a memorial in honor of your deceased; 2) - a business ad; or 3) - a congratulatory tribute.

WE NEED NEW SPONSORS — If you know businesses, friends or members of your family who would like to par-ticipate, present the idea to them. You will be surprised by the great response you will have by asking people to sup-port our Saint Nicholas Church. The 2017 Annual Journal will be presented at the 52nd ANNUAL DINNER DANCE to be held on Saturday, October 14 at The Brownstone Restaurant in Paterson.

It will be a great evening of elegant dinner, dancing and lots of fun. Over 200 parishioners and friends of St. Nicholas are expected to attend. A ticket for the

dinner is $75.00 per person and can be reserved by calling 201-944-1154.

Thank you once again for supporting our parish,

keeping it alive and strong for the future. May the Lord bless you and your family,

Fr. Chris

ALWAYS MORE, ALWAYS BETTER If you want to give more and more of yourself, you must ever more deny yourself (IX, 28). With caution we must make sure that no spark of fervor is turned off, neither by defect nor by excess (XXII, 130). In order to be an always more and better image and likeness of God, my whole journey must consist in ascending to, approaching and achieving union with God. The way to achieve it is to please the Lord ever more and better, by more and better resembling him (XXVI 102). As rays of sun, as children of light, we are told to walk al-ways forward, always upward, always in fervor (VIII, 139).

Fr. Justin Maria Russolillo, the Founder of the Society of Divine Vocations, was born in Pianura (Naples, Italy) on January 18th, 1891. He was ordained a priest on September 20th, 1913. No sooner he became the pastor of Pianura on September 20, 1920, than he began working for the realization of his dream. That same year, the first community of the

Society of Divine Vocations, which became known as the “VOCATIONIST FATHERS” came into being. The Society of Divine Vocations received its first Diocesan approval on May 26, 1927. It became a Congregation of Pontifical right on May 24th, 1947. Fr. Justin established the Vocationist Fathers and their special charism to foster and promote vocations to the priesthood, reli-gious life and holiness among all God’s people. To carry on this vocational work Fr. Justin established the Vocationary, a special house of formation that would supply vocations to both reli-gious order and diocesan seminaries.

For those who are undecided whether they want to be a Vocationist, a Diocesan priest or a member of another religious community, the Vocationist Fathers offer the Vocationary, a place of vocational dis-cernment. The Vocationary was established especially to attend to the needs of those financially unable to attend the seminary and those who are still searching and discerning their vocation. By establishing the Vocationary, Fr. Justin focused his attention not only on candidates seeking a religious or priestly vocation but also on those who had left the priesthood or who were in danger of doing so. Thus, the Vo-cationary has often given life to those who had abandoned the active ministry. Fr. Justin died on August 2nd, 1955 at Vocationist Fathers Mother-house in Pianura. On December 18th, 1997 Pope John Paul II recog-nized Fr. Justin heroic virtues and proclaimed him a Venerable. On July 1st, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI signed the decree of validity of the miracle by Fr. Justin intercession to Ida Meloro of East Hanover, New Jersey (USA). The ceremony of beatification was on May 7th, 2011 in Pianura (Naples, Italy), the birthplace of Fr. Justin. The Vocationists’ spirituality stems from Fr. Justin’s conviction that all people are called to holiness. Their “first duty” is to be with God. Their ultimate goal is to achieve Divine Union. They are called to establish and live the relationship of “child, parent and spouse” of God on the pattern of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The Catholic Church, the Holy Fam-ily and the Blessed Trinity are the heart and center of their spirituality, which may be summarized thus: “Ascension to the Trinity with the Holy Family in the Church.”

Blessed Fr. Justin Maria Russolillo, S.D.V.
