PENTECOST SUNDAY

A SIGNIFICANT DAY

"And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were" (Acts 2:2). The Holy Spirit's arrival o n t h a t f i r s t P e n t e c o s t w a s signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it's like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God's Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of salvation. Today, this is no less true for us. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Marriage is ideally a parish event today, but in the first three centuries of the church's history, it was a household celebration guided by civil law and pagan customs. Changes happened quickly after the Peace of Constantine in 312, and the fresh air after long persecution brought some creativity. The speech that the father of the groom's family gave before dinner or the veiling or crowning of the bride (or even the spouse's arrival at the honeymoon suite) attracted a prayer of blessing.

With amazing rapidity, worship was propelled out of the intimate setting of house churches to large public gathering spaces, and some parts of the marriage ceremony began to migrate with the growing community to the new spaces. In Rome, the veiling of the bride with the customary daily headgear of a married woman became the central liturgical act, accompanied by a biblical prayer for her integrity and fruitfulness. There were no vows as such (just as there are no vows to this day in the Orthodox marriage rite). In the liturgy, after hearing John's Gospel account of the wedding at Cana, the bride was veiled and blessed, and the priest gave the kiss of peace to the husband, who then gave it to his bride. The liturgy of Rome traveled far, and everywhere it went, marriage became a church celebration. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Pentecost Sunday Pentecost Sunday Pentecost Sunday Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). It is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost), and it supplants the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and which celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai.

The Acts of the Apostles re-counts the story of the original Pentecost as well (Acts 2). Jews from all over were gath-ered in Jerusa-lem to celebrate the Jewish feast. On that first day of the week, ten days after the Ascen-sion of the Lord, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary were gathered in the Upper Room, where they had seen Christ after His Resurrec-tion:

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. [Acts 2:2-4]

Christ had promised His Apostles that He would send His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles

began to preach the Gospel in all of the lan-guages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke. The Apostle Peter stood and addressed them, saying they were not drunk. It was only nine o'clock in the morning. Then, empowered by the Holy Spirit, Peter preached boldly to them, explaining about Jesus Christ and God’s plan of salvation. The crowd was so moved when Peter told them of their part in Jesus' cruci-

fixion that they asked the apostles, " B r o t h e r s , what shall we do?" (Acts 2:37). The right re-sponse, Peter told them, was to repent and be bap-tized in the name of Je-sus Christ for the forgive-

ness of their sins. He promised that they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. That is why Pentecost is often called "the birth-day of the Church." On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ's mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. It's inter-esting to note that St. Peter, the first pope, was already the leader and spokesman for the Apos-tles on Pentecost Day (see Acts 2:14ff).

In years past, Pentecost was celebrated with greater solemnity than it is today. In fact, the en-tire period between Easter and Pentecost Sunday was known as Pentecost (and it is still called Pen-tecost in the Eastern churches, both Catholic and Orthodox). During those 50 days, both fasting and kneeling were strictly forbidden, because this period was supposed to give us a foretaste of the life of Heaven.
