On this Sunday right aer Christmas, the Church celebrates the
Feast of the Holy Family. A few days ago we welcomed the birth
of the Baby Jesus. So now that completes the family picture…
Mom, Dad and their li(le Son. The Church now focuses our a(en-
+on on the family life of Mary, Joseph and Jesus. We have always
looked to them as “The Holy Family” and a model for all families.
Now this can be a li(le daun+ng, to look at our families and see
how we measure up to THAT family! But it is within the realm of
possibility to consider each of our families a holy family. When
mee+ng with a group of parents from our parish, I asked them if
they would describe their families as holy. Their first reac+on was
a laugh, or head shake or nega+ve response. But aer we shared
some of what holiness means, it didn’t seem so out of the ques-
+on to see our families as holy. Holiness is not perfec+on, holi-
ness is in the daily trying. Holiness is in the making mistakes and
learning from them. Holiness is in the recogni+on of my imper-
fec+on, yet daily trying to stay close to Our Lord. So, even though
it may seem like chaos is a family’s daily experience, holiness can
be found in its midst. As Pope Francis always alludes to…holiness
is in the messiness of life. In his talks to parents, our dear Pope
always reminds them of the 3 phrases all families need to remem-
ber and use… “May I”… “Please”… “I’m sorry.”
The Gospel we hear today gives us a glimpse into one episode in
the life of the Holy Family. Mary and Joseph were in a panic when
they could not find their young son, who had stayed behind with-
out telling them. (Moms and Dads, does this sound familiar?)
When they retraced their steps all the way back to Jerusalem, and
finally found him, Mary asks (and you can just imagine the tone),
“Son, why have you done this to us? Your Father and I have been
looking for you with great anxiety.” How many parents know ex-
actly what Mary and Joseph were feeling! Jesus was 12 years old.
The Gospels do not tell us much more of the life of the Holy Fami-
ly when Jesus was young, other than that Jesus went home with
his parents, was obedient and grew in wisdom, age and grace.
But we must remember that they were a real family living in their
very real +me. So, Moms and Dads, talk to our Blessed Mother
Mary and St. Joseph about your anxie+es, worries, concerns and
joys. They know. They get it. Spend some +me with them and
share what is in your heart. And parents, know that you have a
tremendous voca+on, and not an easy one. Your family has been
entrusted to you by God, to love and nurture and to set them on
the path to heaven. This is no small feat. It takes courage and
strength, and yes, true holiness. So do not be afraid of the mis-
takes or failures, just stay close to Jesus, Mary and Joseph and
follow their lead.
May God bless all the families of our parish
as we head into a New Year of grace!

Building and Appeal Update….
Our Growing Together as a Family of Faith Appeal continues to gain momentum as we prepare for
our growing community. The preliminary work for the second & third phases of our project is now
underway. Our next phase is the installation of a new playground for our parish. The preliminary archi-
tectural drawings have been reviewed and there are some updates that need to be included. There will
be an area for our young children, with playground equipment, a safe surface for the children. The playground, in its preliminary stages
has a small area for a basketball net as well as a large open area with grass for kickball. The entire area will have a fence and landscaping.
We will keep you updated as we progress. Thank you for your continued
