Saint of the Week St. Anthony

Feast Day January 17th St. Anthony was not educated as a child in Egypt. He wore a skin, he refused to bathe, and he lived on bread and water. Stories about Anthony spread far and wide, stories about his healings, and how his words comforted the suffering. Anthony’s whole life was not one of observing, but of be-coming. When his parents died he was eighteen or twenty and he inherited three hundred acres and the responsibility of a young sister. He read in Matthew, “if you wish to be perfect, go sell your posses-sions, and give the money to the poor, and

you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” An-thony gave away all his material possessions, entrusted his sister to a convent, and went outside the village to live a life of pray-ing, fasting, and manual labor. It wasn’t enough to listen to words, he had to become what Jesus said. If Anthony heard of a holy person he would go and visit that person, he wasn’t looking for words of wisdom, he was looking to become. So if he ad-mired a person’s constancy in prayer or courtesy or patience, he would imitate it. Then he would return home. Anthony struggled with the devil and his struggle left him drained. One time when God spoke to Anthony, he asked God why he hadn’t intervened and God told him that he watched his struggle, and because he didn’t give in, he would stay with him and protect him forever. He died at the age of 105.

And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them

Father Morrison’s Musings Last Weekend was a great sports weekend! Surprisingly I’m not speaking about the Saints playoff victory over the Panthers or less surprisingly, Georgia’s generous gift of a National Championship to Alabama. I’m speaking about

the weekend of sport that took place right here in Robertsdale in St. Patrick’s Gym. For me as Pastor, one of the highlights of last week was being present for the St. Patrick Basketball games. My schedule worked out to be able to catch a good deal of the basketball games taking place in our Gym on Friday Night and Saturday morning. It was uplifting to see so many people present in our Gym. As I watched the various age groups, it was great to see the development and growth in talent that takes place as these children mature into young adults. I left the gym filled with gratitude: Gratitude for the many coaches who give of their time to help our children discover the joy of sports, gratitude for the parents who sacrifice in bringing their children to practice and to the games, gratitude for the gen-erous donors who helped to construct a gym for all this activity to take place, and gratitude for my own childhood memories of Saturday sports. My own memories of the excitement of get-ting better, learning to play as a team, learning how to win, and learning how to lose; these are Saturday lessons that we learn as children and help us as we mature into adults. Thank you to all our coaches, parents, and students who help make Saturday school possible! -Father Jim
