Dear Friends in Christ,

Solemnity of Christ the King

This Sunday we come to the end of the liturgical year and prepare to begin Advent next weekend. Jesus is the Lord of the universe and we find our greatest peace when we allow him to be the Lord of our lives. I once heard a speaker say that “the key step in the spiritual journey for you and me is to resign as the CEO of the universe!” We don’t do that very easily, but when we do let the Lord be the Lord we are on the road to spiritual health. How do we know if we are making progress on the spiritual journey? Today’s gospel in which Jesus proclaims the Last Judgment scene is vital. What will we be judged upon when we come before the judgment seat of God? St. John of the Cross said in the evening of life we will be judged upon love. Jesus says whatever we do for the least of our brothers, we do unto him. Jesus identifies himself with the poor and those in need. Jesus didn’t want to make discipleship something for the spiritually elite. He lifts up the simple act of giving food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, clothing to those in need, a visit to the sick. There may be times in our lives when we may be called to a heroic form of charity, but most of-ten we live our faith quietly, responding day by day to the needs that arise with the heart and mind of Christ. That’s a lot tougher to do than it sounds! Our vision can get clouded by selfishness. Haven’t we all had times in our lives when we walked right by someone in need because we were too self absorbed? The conversion process is about becoming less self-centered and becoming more God-centered. When we bow down before the Lord, we become more humble and his pres-ence grows within us. We see with the vision of Christ and hear and act in a Christ-like way. We’ll never be per-fect on this side of eternity, but with God’s grace, we’ll continue to grow and be strengthened to live out today’s gospel. Next weekend, with the lighting of the Advent wreath, we will be entering into the season of Advent. It is a special time of preparation for the coming the Lord at Christmas. One of the ways to make this season special is by taking some extra time for prayer. If you are free during the day, please consider coming to one of our daily Mass-es. The readings during the Advent season are rich in meaning and will help us prepare for the Lord’s coming. On each Advent Monday from 7:00—8:30 pm, we’ll have an Advent Adoration gathering in the Crane Road Chapel. We’ll have Eucharistic Adoration, a reflection by Fr. Deitz, and music led by Mike Zak. These gatherings will help us prayerfully prepare for the birth of our Savior. So plan on joining us on one or all of these Monday evenings. May the Lord bless you as we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King and prepare to enter into the holy season of Advent!

In Christ,

Msgr. Steve

Grief Support Gathering: “Hope for Healing” Thursday, December 11

Led by Msgr. Steve and Deacon Bill Johnson

The loss of a loved one is always difficult, but those feelings of loss can become more acute during the holiday season. During this gathering, Msgr. Steve and Deacon Johnson will share some reflections on how our spirituality can help us in the grieving process. They’ll also have a special fo-cus on “handling the holidays” and present some practical strategies that will help you find hope, healing, and new life. We’ll have a morning gathering from 9:00 —10:30 a.m. in the Carse Center at the Downtown Church AND an evening gathering from 7:00—8:30 p.m. at the Crane Road Church. For more information, contact Msgr. Steve at 630-338-8000 or e-mail sknox@ stpatrickparish.org.

Again this year, Giving Trees will be set up the weekend before Thanksgiv-ing. Hundreds of ornament tags from local organizations will adorn the trees, calling to our generous parish to help support those less fortunate. To help the ministry team, we ask that you…

♦ Do not wrap food items (bottled water, coffee, baby formula, etc.).

♦ Securely attach the Giving Tree Tag to your gift so it gets to the correct agency.

♦ Drop off your gift (s), as early as possible—the earlier the better it is for us to organize and deliver them.

NOTE: Donating a gift card? To prevent it from getting lost, put gift card donations with the or-ganization tag in a sealed envelope; mark “Giving Tree” on the outside of the envelope and put it in the collection basket at Mass.

So that gifts can be delivered in time for agency Christmas parties, the last day to drop off gifts is Sunday, December 14. However, We will make every attempt to deliver gifts that come in after that date. Take a tag, give a gift and bring a smile to someone in need. If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Bialek, 630-677-8934 or e-mail wbialek@ live.com.

New Divorce Recovery Program “The Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide” Begins Thursday, January 8

Have you been through divorce and sense a need for healing and renewal in your life? We invite you to participate in this 12-week recovery program on Thursday nights from 7:00—8:30 p.m., at the Crane Road Church. Divorce is a pain-ful experience that impacts every dimension of a person’s life. With God, there is hope and the possibility of renewal and healing. This excellent, 12-week program was developed to help those who are struggling to find new life. Developed by Rose Sweet, who experienced the pain of divorce, but found a new beginning through the Church, Rose shares her story at retreats and conferences around the country — of God’s faithfulness, His forgiveness, and her recov-ery. “I’ve been there. I know the pain of divorce, but I also know how rich God’s mercy is and that’s the good news I want to share with divorced Catholics,” she said. Rose recently partnered with Catholic publisher St. Benedict Press/TAN Books to release The Catholic’s Divorce Sur-vival Guide, a 12-DVD series that includes some of Catholic media’s top personalities: Dr. Ray Guarendi, Catholic psy-chologist and popular host of “The Doctor is in” on Ave Maria radio; Fr. Mitch Pacwa of EWTN; Father Donald Callo-way and Christopher West (both children of divorced parents) who share principles of authentic love found in St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. Rose’s message to those who view the DVD is, “If you are separated or divorced, there’s hope and healing through the Church.

Carse Center at the Downtown Church. St. Vincent de Paul Soci-ety serves local families facing difficult finan-cial times and provides assistance to people in need. It’s a wonderful way for your family to help those in need during Advent. We invite our parish children to donate items and pray for the people who will receive them. We encourage children to use some of their own money and pray over each donated item. Since the food pantry will be well stocked with food after Thanksgiving, we are asking that paper products be do-nated. Praying With Scripture As A Family

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This is the final Sun-day in the liturgical year. We begin a new liturgical year with Advent next week. This Solemnity reminds us of Christ’s Kingship over the whole created universe and each one of us. Try reading the scriptures as a family and talking about it sometime during the week. Here are some discussion questions to help you get started: In the first reading, God desires to be our shepherd. He

comes to give us rest and to seek out the lost. God wants to shepherd us; to guide us along the path of eternal life. We need to be attentive to the voice of our Good Shep-herd. This week listen to the Lord’s voice in some quiet prayer each day.

In the second reading, St. Paul expresses the great hope we have in Christ’s resurrection and coming in glory. Jesus, who has been raised from the dead, has conquered sin and death. If we allow Christ to reign as King of our hearts, He will destroy sin in our lives as well. Is there a certain sin that is a constant struggle? Present it to the Lord in prayer, in the confessional, and ask Him to conquer it in you.

The gospel tells us that our eternal salvation is dependent on our response to the needs of others. How do we live out the gospel? Are we seeking Jesus in every person? What can you do as a family to share the gospel with others through the spiritual and corporeal works of mercy? Look up the spiritual and corporeal works of mercy and begin working through them as a family.

Praying With Scripture As A Family was developed by Frs. Deitz and Browning to help you discuss the gospel read-ing as a family each week. Frs. Browning and Deitz welcome your questions or comments. Contact them at: 630-338-8000.

Are you unable to go up to receive Communion? Please tell an usher you need a Eucharistic Minister

Have you seen the children’s bulletins in the nar-thex/lobby of the Downtown and Crane Road Churches. Each bulletin goes with the scripture readings for the day and helps children connect with the focus of the Mass. There is one for children age 3 – 6 & age 7 – 12

Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3:00 p.m. Tuesdays at the Crane Road Church

Wednesdays at the Downtown Church

Our Lord promised extraordinary graces to those who recite this special prayer. The chaplet is prayed on rosary beads. It is appropriate to pray the Chaplet during the “Hour of Great Mercy” at 3:00 each afternoon. This recalls the time of Christ’s death on the cross.

Vocations Corner: Taking Time To Pray

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to spend three days on retreat. During this time, I was able to set aside all the many things usually on my plate, and focus 100% on God and His love for me. This time spent in deep prayer re-minded me that if we want to hear God and we want to know where He is call-ing, we have to take time to listen. This

can’t be something that just happens from time to time when we feel like it—we can’t treat prayer like an emer-gency parachute that we’re glad to have in our pack, but we hope we’ll never have to use! We need to take time every day to pray and to listen. Even more important is to make sure that when we pray that we aren’t just going through the motions. If you take time to pray every day but allow yourself to be distracted most of the time, then you’re limiting your ability to grow in your relationship with God. It is important to lay aside all worries, tasks, and agendas when coming to prayer. Finally, we need to have confidence that if we come to God in prayer, that He WILL answer us. He WILL respond. So, take time to pray and to really delve in deep, and be assured that it will be worth your while.
